If you're using a GC, play Gamecube games. Playing games with different mappings will lead you to react to specific inputs more quickly. Just grinding it out on Sm4sh will just lead to burnout.

Short hops are great and does wonders with characters with strong nairs. I like to do a quick swipe and hit jump and A with my thumb after releasing the stick while dashing. It's a nice thing to learn, especially for dthrows with CF at low percentages.
