The problem is that you're taking the view of the "fun world of Smash" and looking to "The competitive world of Smash" with the fun view. Fun and competitive are two different worlds. And that does start with, as Chaosblade77 mentioned, the randomness involved with items.

That's a glitch I have to watch out for. My brother often plays Ganondorf, and if that happens to me at high damage, then well, I'm screwed. But it won't happen so often, I suppose.

It could be, but the competitive scene will no doubt suffer in Brawl, if that's correct. People just loved the fast-paceing in Melee, but the slower pace in Brawl might bring some more new combos and techniques into the scene. It will just take time before we know the true answer.

Well, tons of advice thus far, and my advice is that you should, if a test event comes before the tournament/release, then attend it. It'll help you greatly.
