Hello! I'm a speedrunner that has recently gotten into melee. I'm learning to play falco and I have an issue. I can usually jump out of shine just fine but sometimes I feel like my input is being eaten. It happens sometimes when I waveshine and more often when shining an opponent at lower percents. Is there a guide somewhere that goes into shine lag in detail or do I just have to get a feel for it?

It's because shine has 3 frames of hitlag when it connects with your opponent, which is why you want to add a very tiny pause between the shine and the jump to be able to jump out of shine. When you shine and don't hit anything you can jump immediately, but when shine connects with an opponent, you need to wait five/four frames and then jump.

You might want to practice that since it seems like you know the timing of not hitting anything since the hitlag of shine connecting changes the timing just slightly. I can easily tell that because you stated that you tend to mess up the inputs more often when shining an opponent at lower percents.

also keep in mind that once you have hit them a few times with shine it stales. I forgot how quick it goes but iirc it doesnt take long at all before the hitlag is 1 frame shorter, making it 'easier' to account for the lag.

other than that I will recommend primarily practicing shining while hitting something.
you can get some good practice in with the uncle punch event Eggsercise
Dpad down to make the timer count up, essentially making it endless.
