Oh, how time flies! I have a couple recent videos if anyone wants to watch or critique!

Just friendlies but with a good old school player so still a good learning experience.
I can give you some advice vs ganon.

First off, if you ever encounter a ganon in bracket, try to strike to FD. That way you can stop him from abusing the platforms. A good ganon player will make better use of the platforms than you.

In neutral, you really don't want to be the first one to jump. Whiffing a bair or fair is extremely unsafe and you'll just get uair'd and then juggled. What you want to do instead is bait out a jump and then try to land a fair/bair really quickly. You'll have to play pretty defensively.

I also noticed you didn't respect ganon from the ledge very much. Big mistake. Ganon has a lot of options from the ledge that you just won't be able to beat out. Ledge hop invincible jab/ftilt, ledge hop down-b/side-b, ledgedash jab, rld double jump aerial, ledgedash by you pivot ftilt or bair/dair, etc. What you need to do instead is to position yourself just outside of his ledgedash range so that if he tries to ledgedash jab you, you can just fsmash or dmash him. If there's platforms, go about 2/3 distance along the platform so you can drop down with a fair/bair depending on where he goes.

Finally, you need to be a little more aggressive when edgeguarding ganon. His down-b leaves him really vulnerable after. If you can predict where he will down-b (ganons telegraph this a lot and often do it mindlessly) you can jump out and hit him as soon as he gets out of it before he can jump again. Dsmash him by the ledge if he's not sweet spotting. If he is, you might need to go offstage to hit him. Basically, it's worth it to take some risks when he's offstage as Zelda.

hey guys. i got some zelda videos of myself. i'm pretty embarrassed, since i have a ton of johns and wasn't playing at my best. i was TO for this event and we like doubled our previous attendance record, so i was all over the place and could barely find time to play my matches. but regardless, you can't always play at your best, and eliminating mistakes when you're stressed is just as good as improving. you're only as good as your worst play. so, i'd like feedback no matter how obvious. i don't care how many times i need to be told not to dash attack a shield, because as long as i do that it needs to be said.

literally as much as you can say will help me. thanks :)

Did some analysis on stream. It wasn't too in depth, just covered a few important things I noticed like stop approaching so much, don't press so many buttons, mix things up more, and some other MU tips and stuff.

You dealt with Peach pretty well! Punished lots of her floats with dash attack. You may have been overextending against that Peach with your kicks. Short hop double bair works well to zone her out, and most characters really. I think your opponents were catching on to your lightning kick approaches, so short hop double kicks would be a good way to mix it up.

I don't know what to tell you about the Sheik match specifically though. I pretty much learned how to use Sheik because I hate the Zelda/Sheik matchup so much :(

Come to think of it, I never tried to double bair much at all against the Peach, and that could've easily helped out with how I was killing much earlier.

As for Sheik, I am considering just switching characters because she's the most common main in my region I'm pretty sure... or 2nd most common after Marth.

Against Sheik you pretty much have to crouch cancel at all times. Getting caught by an uncrouch-cancelled tilt spells disaster. The problem is that you have to simultaneously avoid getting grabbed. Jab is really good for keeping control of the space in front of you, and it hits far enough away that it can't really be shield grabbed. So jabbing and crouching. In order to do those you'll be staying pretty grounded. When you do elect to protect your space with a bair or fair, do not do it while moving forward because you will get grabbed upon landing.

This video is a few weeks old. This is the tournament that I decided I wanted to just main Zelda because I have the most fun with her. I used to play Sheik. A lot of bad habits are in here that aren't as bad anymore, specifically my horrible grab decisions. I mix up movement a lot more as well, something that I have a hard time doing on FoD and due to that it has become a stage I don't much care for as Zelda. Unfortunately this is the only video of me playing Zelda that there is, but hopefully I can make it on stream in a few weeks at Mass Madness again.

Please, any criticism is welcome. I know there's a lot that's needed.

I think the commentators had some good tips, actually. Except for the part where they said Zelda's a bad character :p You made some bad grab decisions, but you also made some good ones. Specifically, you went for too many shield grabs when I would have liked to see you do more out-of-shield options under shine pressure such as u-smash/bair/fair. Also if you notice a Falco doesn't really shine-grab much, sometimes the best thing to do under shine pressure is just to sit in shield and wait.

I must admit that some of your kicks were pretty godlike! That would have been soooo clutch if you kicked his side-b recovery in the end. You made the great read, but couldn't get there quickly enough unfortunately. You've definitely got the kicks down though. Master her other moves to catch your opponents off guard when they pay attention to the kicks too mcuh.

Yeah I've watched the match a decent amount of times now and some of my grabs make me cringe. I've started using up smash out of shield now, along with relying on fair and bair out of shield way more. They're definitely better options most of the time and I've had much better results since I started using them. Thanks for the tips!

What do you guys think of my Zelda? It was my first time doing a recorded match and my friend has a pretty good Doc. I SD'd during some crucial times. Other than that, I didn't play bad.

EDIT: Awful audio quality, turn down your volume for best results (low volume but not off).

Hey all. I've been a Zelda main for about 2 years now, and only now just realized how good smashboards is.

All the sets I've had that make their way to YouTube can be found here.

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLm2wsxazDOWbYBiIe-OlkAzZMv4UYReXu

The videos that best demonstrate what I try to do are basically all the sets after and including the one with DJ Nintendo. All the videos are in chronological order based on tournament dates.

You all should downsmash more to catch people out of shield, out of lag, or just to catch people running in after a bait... Jab -> downsmash and forwards smash -> down smash are both real good, on shield or otherwise
