I'd argue it's a pretty big deal. Shouldn't a trump lead right into a Kick? If not, there's likely a lot to gain from simply disabling ledge invincibility.
Yeah, that's why I initially tried it. Getting a KO at like 40, off a ledge trump sounded huge, but it seems to be really difficult and I don't want to spend the time and effort to do it. Not to mention my poor fingers. I tend to either hit people before they make it back or setup a ledge trap anyways.

Honestly I was the same way until one day when I was playing poorly I just decided to go on a big losing streak. It took a few sessions but I got back a pretty good score where I’m playing people at my rough level. It’s totally worth it if you need to crack a MU.
That's the best way to go, when you are first learning both Zelda and Ultimate. I always played unfamiliar MUs as a long as possible, even if I lost a lot. You will eventually climb back up with actual skills and knowledge in tow, so why rush?

When I grow up, I want to spam Phantom like S StoicPhantom .
You're ten years too early for that, kid.:secretkpop:

Glad it's not just me. A guy at my community did it regularly with Palutena, and he's not a super technical player or anything. So it's either character-related, or the inputs have changed...

Tried it with Corrin, and felt the exact same.

Is it okay to use the emoji of an Asian woman? It's a real person.

A completely unrelated note, here is a picture of MANLY ZELDA:

I don't know if it was you, or Nintendan, but one of you mentioned you're clearly not 100% serious about the competitive aspect because you use Zelda.
That may have been me. I can't remember. I really don't wanna be a competitive Smash player. I just wanna be viable with my characters and be capable on the battlefield, if that makes sense. Even if I do find a tourney to go to, I still wanna try her out in that scene because I enjoy playing her. I don't wanna let her weaknesses get in the way.

You might need to focus on Zelda first, before you play others, but it is a good thing to do. What I like to do though, is play other characters as a warm up before I actually play Zelda. That way I can get some playtime with other characters.

A disjoint is an attack that has no hurtbox(registers a hit). A characters hurtbox is primarily around their model, so characters that attack with their body(Mario) lack disjoints. Characters with weapons, projectiles, or magic(FE chars, Zelda) have disjoints, since those aren't part of their character model. That means when a disjointed attack collides with a non disjoint, the disjoint will usually win, so long as the non disjointed attack doesn't extend past the disjointed attack. So a properly spaced Zelda Up-air, will beat a Ganon Dair. If you mistime it, the Ganon Dair might go through and force a trade. Zelda will win that trade, but it's better to not take the damage.

Just to clarify, since I worded it a little vague, when I said Tilt stick, I meant changing the right analog stick from Smash to Tilt. And when I said it is easier for me to smash attack, I meant the default way of flicking the stick and pressing A at the same time, rather than tilting the stick and pressing A to do a tilt. Since tilts are harder for me to do than smashes, I set my right stick to tilt and just smash attack the default way.

If you are new to Zelda and especially if you played her almost polar opposites, then you definitely have a steep learning curve ahead of you. Learn Zelda's moves to the point you don't really have to think or look at them. Once you can stop looking at her and start looking at your opponent, then you will be better able to study their habits. Once you understand your character, the opponents character, the opponents habits and playstyle, the new game mechanics, DI, and how the various states work(neutral, advantage, disadvantage) you will then understand what is optimal for either player at any given time and that is when reads and other more advanced stuff will start happening.

I'm going to link a match of mine against DK in the video thread in a bit, to better explain what I mean by spacing. I deliberately chose a slower and less complex one, to make it easier to see the spacing. The same principles should still apply to a faster and better DK. There are a lot of do's and don'ts in there, so pay attention to both. Don't try to copy everything you see there, rather get an idea of how certain tools can be used. I also have a Ganon one on my channel. My stick was malfunctioning, so it's more of a joke video, but you can still glean some ideas, if you are interested.
Thanks very much for the advice. I'll definitely take it up.

Ah that makes sense. I'm glad I know now so I don't have to wonder again lol.

I gotcha there. Tilting with the C-stick seems so much easier to pull off. Trying to use the Control Stick + A always results in a smash attack.

Playing online, I can realize that I still have a lot to learn with Zelda. I struggle with reading my opponents with my other characters, but with them (specifically Sonic and Pikachu) I at least make the right reads and punishes. It's still a problem with Zelda, especially because she's a character completely unlike them. It will just take time and practice.

Thanks I appreciate that! A visual will really help me.

Pretty much. I don't think it is very accurate in terms of measuring rank. I lose like 50-100,00 GSP with each loss and gain maybe 3-15,000 with each win. I need to go on crazy high win streaks to get anywhere significant. That can unfortunately lead to lots of tedium in beating on weaker players, until I make it back in Elite. So yeah, just worry about improving and not rank.
Yeah it punishes you so much harder for losing than rewards you for winning. You have to go on a crazy win streak if you even hope to reach a solid GSP. It seems to reward winning more than a hard-fought match, which feels aggravating. My experience these past couple days has helped me to realize it's much better to focus on improving your game than your GSP. You save much frustration that way.

Honestly I was the same way until one day when I was playing poorly I just decided to go on a big losing streak. It took a few sessions but I got back a pretty good score where I’m playing people at my rough level. It’s totally worth it if you need to crack a MU.
Yeah it is. I've lost to an Ike with Zelda four times in a row but I felt like I was improving after the fourth one. it's those little things you have to realize and pat yourself on the back for, not flame yourself for every loss you get. Even in losses you can recall the good things you did. That's what can help Smashers in the long run.

Through playing matches you can really observe how each character plays so you can better yourself for future matches against them.

I do get it, and it's like I'll discriminate you for it. It does sound like you still want to be good with the character and improve.

I, personally, never cared for winning as much, but I also came to realise I have to eventually get there to meet my goals. If I aim for only Top 8, I won't do as well as if I aim to actually win.

Yeah that's the mindset I wanna have. I need to keep it that way because I'm a competitive person at heart, and a perfectionist to a fault. I need to keep reminding myself of that goal, otherwise I'm gonna be obsessive with trying to be the best I can be. It honestly drains the life out of me. When I keep a goal like that in mind, it eases me and takes the pressure off.

Hey, sometimes we need to raise the bar to bring out the best in ourselves. That's not really the case for me though because it gets me nervous and then I perform below expectations. It puts a lot of pressure on me. That's been the case online, but hopefully not anymore.

Do you mean similar to Zelda or similar to Smash 4 Corrin?
Is it okay to use the emoji of an Asian woman? It's a real person.
Wouldn't know. I assume since it is a photo of a Kpop idol, it would be public domain or however celebrity photos and stuff are handled. I just use it to show I'm joking, since it looks a little less out of place than the traditional smilies and other people seem to use it for similar purposes.

He might mean in the sense that you want to improve, rather than only screw around with items and spam one attack and such, not that you need to hang with the likes of Zero and such. A little above those that picked Kirby and spammed Up-B or all the flow chart Mario's in 4. There's no shame in doing either or not wanting to spend all of your time and energy in Smash.

It took me a long time to get anywhere online. There is just so much you have to learn now, especially with all the characters. Just keep in mind, Ultimate is Smash 4 flipped, in terms of advantage and disadvantage. You will be tested not in advantage, but disadvantage. So get Zelda's advantage state down as soon as possible and even if you aren't good in disadvantage, so long as you pay back your opponent in kind, you can still remain competitive. I actually kind of hated this game at first and was going to rank as the worst Smash, since advantage seemed so braindead and a lot of characters seemed to get a lot in it, with little effort and Zelda just seemed to get destroyed in disadvantage.

I since figured out everyone has a bad disadvantage and you were supposed to ensure you get every bit you can out of it. I was still thinking in terms of Smash 4's get a few hits and return to neutral, not realizing Ultimate's is win neutral and make your opponent cry. Once I realized that everything else started to fall into place and I understood what I needed to be doing and I started utilizing Zelda's amazing advantage state to its full potential, to counteract her bad disadvantage.

Thanks I appreciate that! A visual will really help me.
It's there now, if you have the time/will or even want to in the first place.

Indeed. This is especially important for Zelda, since a lot of her stuff can be pretty situational. Knowing all the little tricks, can really help with that.

It might not be easy for you to do so, but I try to think of online as an extension training mode. I still get tilted if I lose to something stupid and still want to win, but overall I take it much less seriously than I did in 4.
What did you mean by this?
I think that was meant as a happy face, to show agreement with your post.

Okay I get it. I misunderstood that. My bad. I kinda have a medium between the two. Have fun, but be good with my characters.

It's been really tough to get her advantage state down because it feels like a steep learning curve. I'm willing to learn, but it's tough to really get a hang of. I know I'll learn with time and practice. I feel like I'm pretty good, but still missing something with Zelda... Sorry if that sounds really vague.

It's there now, if you have the time/will or even want to in the first place.
Cool thanks! I'll check it out tonight.

Indeed. This is especially important for Zelda, since a lot of her stuff can be pretty situational. Knowing all the little tricks, can really help with that.
Yup it is. With her in particular, knowing all the little nuances of each matchup and using her tools to pay back the opponent. It's a matter of learning thru experience.

It might not be easy for you to do so, but I try to think of online as an extension training mode. I still get tilted if I lose to something stupid and still want to win, but overall I take it much less seriously than I did in 4.
Yeah I'm starting to think of that as well since you're playing people. You're getting a grasp of how you use your character against actual humans and seeing what you can learn to improve with them - whether it be combos, techniques, MU's, etc. Hopefully I'll start to take it less seriously now that I wanna focus on improving more than GSP.

I think that was meant as a happy face, to show agreement with your post.
That's what I thought. I just wanted to get some affirmation on that. I didn't wanna misunderstand anyone because I fall into that easily.

With her broad range of tools, it is difficult to figure it out. I don't know that she will have one definitive playstyle and I think there is a lot of room for variances in style and approach. So long as you have three goals, in forcing your opponent off stage, in the air, and forcing air-dodges, you'll figure out your style and get there eventually.

Secretkpop (:secretkpop:) is our goddess here (well I guess co goddess with Fujin Fujin ). She/it is basically the Zelda board's mascot. Although she has faded from regular use, she continues to waTch over us

Ok it's actually from a Kpop group named "Secret" who is possibly disbanded now. The girl in the emote is Jun Hyo Seong, a famous Korean singer and actress.

The emote is generally used as a sarcastic/sassy smile or for trashy Zelda board memes

Example: omg zelda is so bad and garbage in this game

Thanks for the clarification. I largely figured it out from context, but had no idea the lore was so deep lol

Yeah there are variances, but the aggressive approach without Phantom is a no-no. That's asking for trouble. You cannot succeed with Zelda without using that move, even if you know her other moves inside and out. It just doesn't work.

I've done the off-stage part pretty well. I force them into the air, but rarely do I take advantage of it. I have a tough time landing moves such as her U-Air. Sometimes I forget I have Nair because I'm thinking and processing so much lol. Forcing air dodges is the next thing. Don't know how I can make that work, but it'll come with time and practice like a lot of things with Zelda.

A lot of it, is making them burn their jumps. You may not always be able to do that right away on some characters, but the more percent you build and the harder of Zelda's hits you land, the further you fling them from the stage. Then you can use Phantom or Din's Fire and harass them, while they are making their way back. If you plant Din's Fire at or a little before(towards them) where they would need to jump or Up-B, you can successfully edgeguard or force an air-dodge which can lead to an edgeguard. It takes practice to get the timing down and I got a bit of a head start from previous games.

I hate to keep pimping my videos, but above the DK one in the video thread, is my poorly put together Phantom compilation. It deals with Phantom, but is apparently a good showcase for Din's Fire edgeguards. Maybe take a look-see if you want to.

Yeah I've noticed that. It's true when using any of her moves. When I get a good hit off something like Phantom, it creates a wall where it leads into moves like Din's that leads them offstage. it's really helpful. It also applies to the rest of her kit.

That's an interesting tool. Something that can make the opponent panic and think twice. Sounds like it takes practice, but like a lot of Zelda's overall game, its well worth the reward.

Lol you don't need to worry about doing that. Any Zelda help is appreciated. I'll definitely take a look at it and see what I can pick up from you. Heck, I have been meaning to capture some Ultimate videos and upload them to YouTube and get people's feedback on how I can improve. This is especially the case with Zelda since I'm so new to her.

Indeed. Mixing those options is key to her neutral and advantage. There are few of her moves, that I don't think is useful in more than one context. Dsmash is the only one I use, once in a blue moon.

Go ahead and upload some of your matches if you want. I'll at least give you feedback and I'm sure others will too.

I don't know if it was you, or Nintendan, but one of you mentioned you're clearly not 100% serious about the competitive aspect because you use Zelda. I've always mained characters on the lower end of the spectrum, and that's never stopped me from being pretty serious about it. I don't expect to be the best, but that doesn't mean I want to be a nobody...

Maybe one of you were just speaking for yourselves, and I'm reading more into it than I should.

Nintendan Nintendan
Yeah, that was me!
And yeah, maybe I worded it poorly or gave off the wrong idea. I was kinda more talking about the goal/mindset of being the best in the world, playing to win, for high placings and results etc.. Like solely just to win. I think it's fair to say there are better characters than Zelda as of now, and so if we did have that mindset of playing to win then we'd likely not be focusing on Zelda. I didn't mean to say that if you play Zelda you're not "playing seriously" or something like that (sorry!) because a lot of us here are. I'm still definitely going to be playing competitively in this game, but if I truly wanted to play to win, to be the best player in the world etc., then I wouldn't be playing Zelda. Hopefully you catch my meaning? Like if you were to play a card game competitively and you wanted to win, you'd go with what you think is the best deck in the meta, and if you were playing something considered lower tier, you'd be playing it because you believe it's actually the underestimated and is the best call for a tournament. Maybe some people are legitimately playing for results and wins and that's all, and they believe Zelda is actually top tier, and the best character in the game if you properly utilise everything she has.
I dunno, just my thoughts on things like this. Really though, it doesn't make much of a difference. We all play for different things and have different levels of competition, end of the day we're just playing the game.
I think I'm thinking into this too much now lol

Yeah I have a terrible case of amnesia sometimes and forget that I have moves like Nair and U-Air which leaves me dumbfounded. It confuses me as to why I forget them in my arsenal more often than not. Probably because I'm thinking too hard.

Yeah I rarely use D-Smash. I wish it was more useful.

I will. I'll put in the video forum whenever I do.

I also rarely use it too, but I think it does have it uses. It comes out frame 5 (as fast as her dtilt) and sends opponents at a very low angle. Could make for a good quick option when near the ledge, especially when the other character has bad recovery.

Yeah it does. I may try using it at the ledge more often. It could be a nice surprise to dish out.

Now, if we were able to add something from Fujin’s.... face thing, we could create a sassy Frankenstein of sorts.

Why does no one talk about how kyute her English voice is. It's so kyute.

Maybe some people are legitimately playing for results and wins and that's all, and they believe Zelda is actually top tier, and the best character in the game if you properly utilise everything she has.

D-Smash actually isn't that bad. It comes out frame 5 and acts as a pretty decent ledge guard option. The only thing it lacks (aside from more range) is the intangibility on her leg from Brawl. Admittedly though I'm guilty for rarely using it when I should.

Dsmash will combo from a landing sourspot kick at mid to high % based on weight, and will combo from Jab 1 at those same % ranges. It has an amazing angle for edgeguards as it puts them even with the stage, which means they have to deal with a combination Phantom/Dins/Dair when they have very limited space. It can also start tech chases at lower damages

It will also apply great shield pressure if they shield a delayed Phantom. DownB>kick>dsmash will either almost destroy or actually destroy a shield that's at like 95% health

It hits both sides of her with less commitment than Nayru's. It can also be a decent followup move to a blocked Fsmash, kick (sweetspot) or another dsmash if they drop shield and try and grab

Dsmash isn't bad lol. If you want a bad Dsmash look at Sheik's

That's an epic shot. Wisdom prevails over the forces of evil.

I love that voice as well. I think Ayumi Fujimura did a fantastic job for her in-game clips, but I wonder why they didn't give her English voice, Brandy Kopp (also voices Palu) a chance to do the in-game voice clips for English. I would loved to hear more of it. While it was a single line, I thought it was really well done. I would prefer either one for an in-game voice, but I'm curious to see how Kopp would do in that role.

Lol is this turning into a meme?

I'm curious to use it as a ledge move. It could also work as a decent distancing move on occasion, but not something frequent since it could get predictable. I feel the same guilt for not using a lot of her moves enough (Smash attacks in general, Nair, U-Air). I wanna train my mind to learn how to use them a little more often and how to use them situationally.

In most situations, I think I'd just rather D-Tilt. They're basically the exact same speed, just that D-Tilt either leads to stuff or gets them into the air. I even "combo'd" a D-Tilt to Kick at like 80 on Inkling with poor DI/no DI and reaction.

D-Tilt seems like a good quick option when they lack ledge invincibility (it's kind of hard to aim a D-air that quick). There were two specific situations I found that had pretty cool uses, given it's angle. I saved the replay. It looked like it could lead into tech chase situations for Up-B.

That's the voice actress? I heard she went uncredited. Funny enough, I actually thought the in-game voice was her... -______-

I've seen it could be used to combo into a fair at 50-ish%. Also a grab at about that percent. Still need to experiment with it though. Trying to incorporate that more into my arsenal.

Yeah I saw it confirmed over a couple of websites. I had a few guesses but didn't think it was her.

No more memes.
Lol that's perfectly okay. I was just wondering since you used it twice in a reply.

I honestly don't use Dtilts as often as I should. For most characters they're amazing pokes but my dumbbutt just goes "lul Dsmesh atks insted is gud idee ok" and ofc it gets shielded or misses.

I also spam B more than I should instead of Dsmash. It's 1 frame faster in terms of being safe (frame 4) but also riskier in the long run. Dsmash/Dtilt/Naryu cover the same horizontal distance outwards so they can be interchangeable.

No more memes.
Is synonymous with "No more dreams."

gorl do not do this pls no

How's it going Zelda fans? :ultpalutena:

I'm glad after all these years the Legend of Fujin is still an ongoing saga
This Legend of Fujin thing is our equivalent of One Piece. It'll last for a long time.

Also, I got a clip up and I gotta ask you all this:

How disrespectful was this?

Leaving both the video and a url just in case for both mobile and PC users. Because I'm such a nice guy. :secretkpop:

Also, I got very tilted yesterday. Not because of Smash, or because of a children's card game... But because of Vesperia.
I forgot to save after I defeated a Boss in Emhead Hill, so I got a Game Over to a fight Yuri had to solo and now I got to fight that boss AGAIN just to make progress. And it was a pain in the ass to defeat, smh. So I might try and defeat it again today and then make sure to save.

Reminds me of the notorious monster bat I ran into in Berseria that I wasted 3 life bottles trying to run from because I hadnt saved in like an hour and was close to the end of the cave. At least your part members block again in this game unlike Zestria lol.

I dont use dsmash as much anymore because it felt like when I did use it I always got blocked and nayrus was safer. Trying to bring it back into my game tho with Rickster Rickster discoveries.
