I imagine the hamster had no time to feel anything, pain receptors or not. The equivalent is to a human-sized boulder somehow being smashed down on a person with force. I mean, whatever pain the little thing felt was over in milliseconds.

One would hope. But it takes a while for those nerves to stop firing. You'd have to do it quickly, get a clean shot, which means being calm and collected, smashing the skull and severing the brain stem completely, not just breaking the spine while leaving the rest intact, which would cause a lot of pain. Animals also don't hold still very long, and with a hammer, you wouldn't want your hand in the way to hold it down.

But going beyond just this incident. This lady is very obviously deranged and there must be a history of similar abuse for most of the kid's life. I don't know the child and am just assuming, but I think he's been through a lot more than just this incident.

Most likely. She sounds like an abuser, and the kid now has a harder life ahead of him if he has to go live with another caretaker.

The mom basically said that since you got really bad grades, no more hamster for you, so instead of getting rid of it humanely, she got him to kill it with a hammer. Definitely an effective way of punishment, but clearly the wrong way to do it.

They're more valuable to the ecosystem than pet animals.

Yeah but other kids forced each other to do nasty stuff when I was that age.

One of them for example, was kicking a mouse, then throwing it off the school roof. I didn't actually do that one but I did watch it.

Definitely not. But I did have to kill a mouse like that. That's how you kill animals like that... You put them under a towel and hit them with a hammer. It's pretty standard, it's just that this was a pet and not a mouse trapped in a mouse trap.

Well it caught his leg, and we came home to a mouse dying, so I had to take care of it. It was pretty weird, but I couldn't see it dying, and with one swift hammer it was dead.

Despite how "bad" this seems to us morally, she most likely won't be in jail for that long. I mean if animal cruelty had the same sentence as murder, then I could see it. But the maximum sentence for all three of those charges added up is like 15 years.

Animal cruelty is 5 max (still too much imo). Then Child Cruelty is max 10 (I barely see how this applies) and Battery (lolwut) is like 6 months.
