I've been playing smash for a awhile and I just got into competitive, is there anyone else playing competitive at a young age?

Son, you don't even know

A lot of the best smashers started young

Age means almost nothing in this game

Easily, the number one thing smash players will respect is skill. If you're really good and place or win tournaments, you'll get respect.
Keep in mind that your attitude will also play a factor. It is possible to have lots of respect and not be that great, or be a really skilled player that is disliked.

respect isn't really a hivemind. you can be ****ty at smash but still have certain peoples' respect depending on their threshold for that. you can be the best player they've ever played and most people should respect you off of that but i'm sure i could find a reason to not respect you. respect as a player and respect as a person are different things, if you try hard enough eventually you'll win one or the other depending on your priorities

What Varist said is really true as well. You can be respected for skill and disliked for your attitude/personality, vise-versa, or any combination there of. Also, keep in mind, there will always be a few haters. You can't please everyone, but don't make that as an excuse to be rude.

As for being young. Don't worry about it. Lots of really good players started out young, and watching younger players exceed is usually very hype.

Being young is a win-win in this community imo. If you're bad at the game then oh well your'e just a little kid, but if you're good then OMFG U R A PRODIGY.

So long as you don't act like pokemongeof and constantly talk about how awesome you are for being 13. Yeah, most players started at 12, 12 years later they're not so young but no one will hate in you because of age, in fact people tend to respect younger players more for being the new blood in a game that's almost older than them

Oh my god you were in diapers when this game came out.
You will most certainly get respect here if you are a respectable person. If you are a good guy, you will get respect as a person. You will get respect as a player if you are gawdlyk. I envy you starting so young, I started a year and a half ago and I'm 17 now, almost 18. Let me tell you, life gets in the way when you get older. Make use of these years with lots of free time and train, go to tournaments, and study the game, and you will get an incredible foundation to be amazing down the road.

Hax started when he was 11. Armada started when he was 12. Mango when he was 14. HBox probably was 14 too. M2K probably started when he was 13. You're in good company

But the level that melee is played at nowadays is different from when they started

The level at which the game is played means nothing in terms of whether or not you will get respect in the community. Just because the scene is harder to break into now, doesn't mean that you wont get respect. In fact, you may get more respect because you're willing to put in the work even at such a disadvantage.

Age is irrelevant to success in this hobby. You can become as good as you want to be. Yes, the meta is different and has changed tremendously in the past few years, but players like Hbox, ESAM, etc. who started when they were like 13 also had the same challenges at their time with the meta being different than 3 - 5 years before when they began and they had to overcome the same obstacles and adapt.

That's a cop out. I've only been playing since September and I'm catching up to some of the better members of my community rather quickly

I think anyone can get respect for either how good they are or how good of a person they are, age doesn't matter much. Hell, Hax$ started when he was 11 or so. I'm 15 , and for some reason people are surprised I play this young.
Someone gave me some advice, which sounded pretty good to me:

"Don't be a rude/mean or really annoying. You don't want to be known as that guy who is really unpleasant to be around. You can still have fun without being an a-hole or getting on people's nerves, Just be cool , do nice things and always be in good spirits and people will like you."

As long as you do not act your age all the time, you're alright. By not being annoying, you will gain respect and assistance in the community.

At my first tournament I was not even 12 years old (almost but not really).
If you like it than why not? =D

Hope you will have a good time in the community!

You just blew my mind!

MRF: The only way for the scene to grow is for new players to join. If you're expecting to be the best, you're probably going to disappoint yourself a lot (not saying that you could never be the best. Enough work can get anyone there), but you should go into it thinking about having fun. Have lots of fun.

Exactly what I was going to say. People don't care about your age, they care that you're mature enough to handle the social interactions at events. As long as you show a want to improve and be polite instead of going around being arrogant, rude, or self-deserving (like many young kids do) you'll be more than accepted.
As a matter of fact, people will give you a greater deal of respect for being more mature, or more skilled, than most people your age. Just have a good mentality, and keep striving for improvement.

I'm 16, started competitive in december.
Protip: don't take any negative feedback to heart. Don't use slurs of any kind. You'll get more respect. Turn losing into learning. Don't get saltier than the ocean. Try your best, and don't give up. /end protip

In response to your question: yes, they will. Don't be intimidated to play with older people, most people started at your age (myself included) and because you are young you will most likely catch up quite quickly. You are actually in advantage because you are so young.
If you treat people with respect, people will treat you with respect as well (rule of thumb, doesn't always apply). Age doesn't matter, most people are always happy to see new players joining because it's a sign that Melee is growing and growth keeps the whole community alive. This is because most realize how important new players are to the community as a whole.
People will respect your skill, if you have none, people will respect your efforts.

Piece of advice that has been not yet mentioned here:

Be easy and compassionate on/with yourself because Melee is a difficult time and will take some time to learn to. The beauty of Melee has to do with its' depth which is related to the difficulty: you can play this game for 20 years and still keep on improving, you will never be perfect.

Goddamn I wrote an awesome post, hell yeah. But welcome :)

Someone around 11-13 years old attended the beach house on Saturday and it was his first tournament as well. Looks like you aren't the only young, new michigan smasher! I'll see you at Lake Effect probably on Saturday.

Just have a good time and don't be obnoxious and people will like you. Don't be afraid to ask people to play or to ask for advice.
