if u have ever played halo 3 you know that xbox's can connect to other xbox's, so i was wondering since wii has a online (ethernet)port it could connect to other wiis and have for example, SSBB lan parties. have u heard anything about this?

The wii doesn't have one on the back, but there is an ethernet adapter.
To my knowledge the wii cannot do lan

I would certainly like to be able to smash over LAN

There's no need to use LAN, if you have a Wii then you MUST have Internet, and if both Wii are close, the ping (delay, lag) will be next to none compared to LAN.
