Wi Fi Tournament Mode (hoping that it happens)

I was thinking that because of SSBB's demand to last for years and years, it should feature tournaments via Wi Fi. Just some of the main factors of tourny mode would be:

1. Location (country, state, city, or possibly province)
2. Schedule (which has to include when it happens and when it should end)
3. Entry Fee (by credit card or Wii points)
4. Host (whoever is running it)
5. Tournament Type (either Round Robin, Bracket, or Swiss)
6. Prizes (Wii points, Nintendo merchandise, etc)

Player made tournaments would obviously be free, but official Nintendo tournaments would probably charge for entry. Like the title says, I'm hoping this works out, but I do not know what Sakurai has planned for this month.

For 3, I doubt Nintendo would endorse what some might consider "gambling", since this would be with money, or the equivalent of money (Wii points), rather than coins, which are essentially free.

Have to agree with this, although that aside I really do hope that they have an online tourney system, it would be fun and you could easily find new friends through this to smash with(assuming you can get friend invites and such through the online play) when you weren't in a tourney.

Wisconsin...yay that place no one has ever heard o
When i first read this I thought you meant the normal tourny mode, except for Wifi which would be kinda cool, but still.

The fact that you have to stay the whole time would be odd, and if there are ways to stall (i.e. Fox illusion on Termina Bay) then the whole thing is ruined...

As for entry fee, NO
And as for reawrd, probably not.

As far as the tourny length is concerned, it wouldn't be like something where everyone has to stay online for the entire day. It would be something like where you win a few matches one day, stop for the rest of the day, and then continue the next day. And so on until one person remains.

I will admit it does seem weird to charge for an online tourny and to give prizes. That kind of stuff is probably more appropriate for tournaments live. I was hoping that online official tourneys would allow a country such as Japan, Canada, etc, to compete more easily with the U.S.

well, have any of you considered the workarround option? IIRC, you can view matches your friends are playing, so therefore, set up matches online, and have an official tune into the fight, just to avoid the "i won!" "no, I WON" stuff. it would work. you could even have multiple officials. i don't see why it wouldn't work, just incase the official tournament mode doesn't work.

They would not charge for tournaments.

And as much as I love the idea, stalling will probably end any hopes for Nintendo hosted tournaments.

warcraft 3 probably had the best system, where a few times a week they have tournaments of different types (singles/teams/sometimes alliance specific) with the reward for getting tournament wins being special avatar icons you couldn't get any other way.

That being said, expect online tournaments to happen.

Its easy enough to have a third person who acts as a ref to make sure there is no stalling or cheating (saying you won but didn't).

Nintendo's online is too overprotective, they probably wouldn't do that but even if they did it'd be boring. Fighting a bunch of no name people and under their rules, which would include items and unbalanced stages.

well, if it's all paid for, yeah, but if you have to pay for the trip, i'd rather have an online tournament.

Finally a smart comment. Just imagine the money you have to spend on gas if you're traveling out of state and if you have to stay at a hotel. Plus the tournament fee (usually $5.00) would add on. Online tournaments hosted by players should always be free in my opinion. But it wouldn't suprise me at all if there were entry fees and awards for national/international tourneys via Wi Fi.

I think a tournament 'set-up' mode would be just fine.
Like, the ability to set up a tournament similar to that of the mode that was in Melee.

You know?

I like the idea it's just, I really think Wii Points and real life money are really anti-Smash

If online tournaments end up happening, they will never replace real tournaments. Tournaments are about the community and the trip as much as they are the game.

One thing we are doing at WiFi Wars to help supplement this is a league system with "season" end playoffs. Think more like the NBA championships instead of a typical tournament.

If a ranking system is not being implemented by Nintendo... I highly doubt they will have official matches. That sort of organization is going to require proper planning by us... the consumers.

You have to remeber, Nintendo hates competition, we should all just play Mario Party instead.
It's not really that. I am much more under the impression and have heard from others that it has something to do with culture. That's why the friend codes are implemented as they are. I'll get back to you on this Hypnotist.
