Nah, people still plan to hold tournaments IRL. There are still going to be some online tournies, but the entire scene isnt going to be on the internets.

I, for one though, am kinda glad that there are going to be some online tournies. I can practice until I feel comfortable going to a real tournament.

Definitely not. Online play won't be flawless, I imagine people won't want to play high-stakes tournaments over it. Even if it works perfectly though there will still be local tournaments held just for the community aspect.

Eh just like in PC FPS world, I'm sure there will be online tournaments, but the really serious ones will be in person or LAN

People don't seem to understand exactly how fast signals travel through the internet or maybe they don't understand exactly how fast smash is play especially at the tournament level.

Assuming it will be similar to Melee, a reasonable amount of lag will be about 15 ms TOTAL. Given that there is lag from the TV, wireless, and just plain internet lag, it will be unlikely you will have a good game with anyone outside your city, maybe you could play across your state if the wiring is done well.

Even if Brawl is a little slower the reasonable amount of lag might change to 20 to 30 ms. They really cannot make it slow enough for the internet and keep the smash feeling, imo.

I estimate that the average ping across smashboards people will be around 50 to 80 ms, so tournaments are out of the question. Hopefully lag will allow for some regional tournaments and battles with your friends. If you are expecting more than that, prepare to be disappointed.

I do cry for the lack of leaderboard though. -sigh-
I'm pretty much putting a verbal abuse bulls-eye on me with this comment, but an online automated leaderboard is really overrated. I've seen multiple instances (most prominent one would be a PSP game called Field Commander) where a simple exploit skewed the leaderboard more than a corkscrew.

From what I see, an online leader board would cause more complications and player segregation for this game.

Agreed. Online leader boards just make immature players act more immature. People get so concerned over their ranking that they forget that its a game and no one really cares what your score is they just want to play a fun match.

Online tournaments will definitely occur, but there is no way that people will stop having tournaments IRL. If anything, online tournaments will help give players a benchmark for their abilities. Just as college sports programs play teams from outside their conferences before playing the conference match ups, Wi-Fi will allow Smashers to improve their skills and learn their weaknesses before playing real life tournaments.

Under your bed, making the face in my icon.
My reason for wanting a leader board didn't really account for those reasons, but I can't say those reasons have ever occured to me, and they are pretty valid. Reason why I've always liked leader boards, was for the sole purpose of knowing my ranking against other players, not so much to be the best, or to bash people lower than me, etc. =P

There's no such thing as magical code. If your opponent is on a slow connection, or is distant to your location, then yes it will lag.
Not all matches will be like that, and your best bet would just be friend matches over wifi, with people who you know have a good connection.

There will be online tournaments, but nothing will replace the real life ones.
