Why I play Melee

Does your definition of "good player" mean someone who can easily reach Giga Bowser, so someone who has minimal difficulty clear Event Matches? If so, I am in no way a good player. The biggest problem I have isn't the timing of certain moves (though that is still a giant hurdle), but remembering what I have. If the enemy closes in, I have half a second to process that fact, to think of what would be best, and then to use it. I often go several seconds being comboed before remembering that rolling exists.

Part of the problem may be the move over from Brawl, since I only got Melee a week ago. Compared to Brawl, recovery doesn't feel right, controls are stiff, smashes are difficult to pull off, even guys like Ganondorf feel like they're running on oily ground, and it's like my TV is set to fast-forward. Maybe if I practice, I'll get accustomed to all this so that Brawl will be the one that feels unnatural.

I've had an unfortunately poor opinion of the competitive scene. I've read a couple of "Playing to Win" articles by various authors, and I was a few shades away from horrified. My opinion has softened, but I'm still not sure if it's something I want to be a part in. If I do, I'm so totally maining Dr. Mario.

A good player to me is someone with great tech skill, spacing, combo ability and knowledge of the game (knowing matchups, etc).

It doesn't matter what mode you play, the more time you spend playing the game, the more fluid you will get with it and the more adjusted you will get with the game.

In my eyes, playing to win is a terrible way to play (maybe there's an exception for tourney finals or something). Playing to learn will make you a better player. It's a healthy attitude to take.

Why is this? You don't have to play the game competitively but that seems an extreme reaction.

If you get hit by dumb ****, don't just take it like a *****

If you get hit by the same move over and over again in a situation, tell yourself that you're tired of taking this **** and think of all the ways you can to beat it. If you learn how to get better even just one situation at a time, I guarantee you will see noticeable improvement.
