Pokemon for me wasn't really popular when it came out that I remember(I'm 33). Everyone in my neighborhood played magic: the gathering. We watched plenty of anime but never watched pokemon or got into it. I think it's safe for me to say I'll never understand the appeal of it. The only thing I know about pokemon is what smash brothers has taught me. I've learned some of their names over the years yet I still find them boring.

You know it's true people flip out over pokemon. What's so exciting about it that people love so much? I watched the cartoon a couple times and apparently the games are a grind.

People are peeling their faces off for mewtwo to be in smash 4. Out of all the casual games and tournaments I attended people didn't play him in mellee anyways so wtf are people flipping out about? Why do people love it so much I don't get it.

I loved Pokemon, because I grew up with it, seeing the show/playing the games and seeing how it grew in popularity, and unlike certain series, it continued to grow for nearly two decades now, going from the first 150 to now almost 800..

It was overall intriguing in a sense where you could pick from 800 different creatures of all shapes and sizes and compose a team in which whether it was during the main story or the meta game, you could compete with soooo many different trainers with their own combination of "pocket monsters", and so I really enjoyed it on that level now that I'm older.

Pretty much the same reason I still love Digimon too. They're unlike any other rpg (except for Ni No Kuni, which I LOOOOOOVEEEEE) where there are countless possibilities, a game of chance and skill, and if you're into the competitive scene it takes a LOT of dedication and math..

It's like the last good turn based RPG series

FF has turned to crap

Dragon Quest is still good, but the last game they released was an MMO that didn't come to America

...

and that's about it.

Most of the rest use too many JRPG tropes that piss me off and don't make up for it with anything.

I also like the "customization" aspect of pokemon where, not only can I create my own team of pokemon but I can change it's stats, item and attacks to fit my preference.

Plus, there are so many pokemon that surely I can find at least 6 I really like

Whereas in other JRPG's I'm stuck with people in my party I HATE

Maybe because he's pretty hard to play and not that good? I like Bowser too and I don't ****in' play him.

Pokemon was a lot of people's childhood thing. Not mine because my parents were the kind of people who actually listened to this ****: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zjHrExOM-ww

It was genuinely surreal seeing these sermons in real life.

I love it because of the bonds you create with something that's not real. I played as a kid and I loved raising each one of them and seeing how strong each of them became. As I grew older my love for the game grew less as I was smashing through the games like nothing with no challenge what so ever, and that's when i decided to try competitive. I was actually really good at OU but eventually saw no point since no one I knew played competitive pokemon. I still have my 3DS sitting here just waiting for me to hop back into X and breed for more competitive pokemon. Maybe someday I will return to the game that brought me so much joy but I have my prioritize my time with my studies.

I actually like the way the recent X/Y went with a slightly darker tone. I wonder if they will start to find more adult/child balances.

What jrpg tropes by the way? I usually have no qualm with many of the older ones. Chrono Trigger, Fire Emblem, Golden Sun, Lufia, Advance Wars, etc.

You've probably heard several of these before: The protagonist is usually either highly optimistic and a bit on the thick side (Tidus, Lloyd), or he's a pessimistic, miserable jerk. Your's party's healer is a bright, cheery girl with a heart of gold who is likely a bit naive. Of course, to counter this you probably have a dark, broody girl who probably uses offensive magic or is a warrior woman. Not to mention that you're party is possibly joined by an old warrior who may or may not be secretly mentoring the protagonist. You can't forget the underaged girl who is possibly exploited for fanservice. Or the suave, pretty lady's man. Of course, as an alternate your pretty boy can also be really troubled by his past too. Or maybe, you'll even get a monster beast man who joins your cause.

Expect the plot to start out pretty simple, X is doing something bad, go stop them. Of course, it rarely stays that simple. If religion is involved, expect for one of the game's major twists to be that said religion is actually evil. About half way through the game, expect for the game's simple plot to do a complete 180 and suddenly throw plot twist after plot twist at you. Always expect for the game's initial threat to actually be controlled by someone else, which each new villain having less characterization and motivation than the last. Of course, around this time you can also expect for half of your party's character arcs to be quietly forgotten about as the blossoming romance between the hero and healer takes center stage. As you approach the end of the game, expect things like pacing, foreshadowing and common sense to be thrown out the window as the game tries to shock you with as many twists as it can pommel you with in the last few hours. If the game was made post FF7, expect most of these twists to be very surreal and abstract. Also if the game was made post FF7, someone in your party is not who they initially appear to be. I can count the number of post FF7 JRPGs that I have played that haven't had this twist on one hand.

I'm pretty sure that monstrous wall of text is what Pyscho is talking about. I have quite the affinity for the JRPG genre, so I've come to accept these things. Yeah, it can get annoying seeing the same thing over and over again (can we talk about how Final Fantasy X, Grania II and Tales of Symphonia have the same exact premise?). But for me, my love of turn-based combat, unique character building that breaks away from DnD and seeing all of the imaginative locations and art direction in so many of these games keeps me coming back. Plus I just have a blast when I play them, flaws and all.

That was super off topic, but I wanted to respond to that.

Also, I don't think Advance Wars is a JRPG.

Because no matter how much I say this will be my last Pokemon game, there's always something bringing me back.

I played the card game.

Was suxxu

The video game was where it was at. More variety etc.

Back in 1998, a fellow 3rd grade student walked up to me and said "you are new here"

I replied. "Yes. Do you recognize me?"

"Don't worry about it this is the cool test. What is this?"
(Holds up a "Drowzee" card with finger over revealing names)

"A tapir on it's hind legs half covered in decorative mud"

"You are not only not cool you are really weird and try too hard to be cool"

6 months later I could recite 150 fictional animals and point out their similarities to animals where applicable- since that gave me some pretty good starting mental material to play the games I grew to like them.

Because that kid was right, in some ways.

WTF were they talking about?

You knew what a tapir was in the 3rd grade.

I'm sure 90% of adults don't even know what a tapir is

Kids can be pistols. He probably heard "the bore and stroke of a Ford 289 are 4.0" and 2.47" respectively, that is a really crude diagram though"

And thought "wow I have no idea what he is saying but it is not the right answer so I am ok"

Once I told him that "Charizard" is a contraction of "Char Lizard" I was wayyy too try hard he always knew it.

But he was right, I really tried way too hard to fully know pokémon. It made me really bitter when Gen2 came out.

I like it because the characters are ours to fill in. From the start, I always had complex personalities that I imagined for my team; everyone always had something about them.

Heck, it's partially what inspired me to become a writer. I love creating characters that much.
