First, I'm posting this in Melee because both players sponsored by companies associated with porn have both been predominately Melee players if I am not mistaken. This is not an Melee issue. It is a Smash issue. This must be kept in mind. Whether we like it or not, perception of different smash scenes indirectly or directly effects all the other smash scenes for better or for worse.

When I saw that Bizzaro Flame had been sponsored, I was of course incredibly happy. Bizarro Flame is one of my top five favorite smashers of all time, for obvious reasons, and he seems like a really great guy. When I heard he was sponsored by You Porn, I was not so excited. This is not an attack at Bizarro Flame at all, but it's time for us as smashers to decide who we are and who we want to be associated with. To put it in a super corny manner, we need to decide our destiny. We also need to look back at our roots.

Smash is a beautiful game. (My favorite smash game is easily Melee, by a long shot, but I understand that others have different preferences.) Every smash game brings something unique to the table whether new characters, crazy combos, or new rivalries. Every smash game allows the player to be creative and expressive, to be empowered. The games are intuitive while having a wealth of deep gameplay. Smash caters to a wide audience, it unites people. I've seen a group of smashers order pizza and the delivery guy join in and have a blast. Almost anyone can play smash, it's an extremely inclusive game. It's a game that deserves respect, played by people who deserve respect.

And the community worked like mad to gain this respect. We've been grassroots for 13 years people. Sm4sh has the respect it has because people were so freaking passionate about Melee that they put in countless unpaid hours to host tournaments, drive across the nation, and so much that will never be recognized. And all that was sparked by Smash 64, also grassroots, still thriving and wacky today. We literally made our own game we were so passionate, Project M. This community has worked this way because we are insane and we have a dream.

We've gotten to where we are because we always dreamed we could get here. Bigger tournaments, bigger prize pots, bigger audiences. We dreamed we could be esports and here we are.

But I think we, as a community, have always wanted more than just bigger tournaments and more money. We've wanted respect. We've wanted people to universally see how great the games we play really are. We've wanted people outside our limited circle of relations to understand the stuff we do and why it is so awesome. We've wanted normal people to recognize smash and associate it with games like chess or go- games of organic skill.

We are a community built on respect. Smash, as a series, respects everyone and caters to no one. That's what we are about.

Having players, having the community, associated with pornography is not the way to gain respect. Pornography, among tons of other stuff, is hurtful to women. It propagates a conception of women as objects. Pornography also caters almost exclusively to men, further alienating a huge portion of the casual fan base and a (sadly) smaller portion of the competitive fan base. Pornography also alienates children and, shocker, we are playing a children's game. 99% of people who play this game are children and what happens when those children (Probably because of parents) no longer come into the community because half the people are sponsored by shady companies. The reason smash has grown so much recently is because these children have entered the community as teenagers.

What it really comes down to is that pornography, beyond it's negative effects, is just not respectable. It alienates players, the antithesis of what smash is at it's very core: unifying people, of all ages, of all sexes, whatever.

So what if other esports have porn sponsors? WE ARE NOT OTHER ESPORTS. We are different from them and better than them. Our games are better than their games. Do we really have to go over a bandwagon argument?

These recent sponsorships have the potential to backfire on everything we have worked to achieve for the past, what, 16 years? Do we want to be respected or devolve back into a white male nerds drinking game?

If you are a important part of the community speak up. There is too much silence on this issue while a small vocal group of immature adolescents like every other post with an innuendo propagating an idea that this is the direction smashers want to go: back into the dark ages of sexism and just stupidity honestly.

This is not a joke. We need to decide who we are.

1. I don't think we should feel entitled to choose whether some company (or whatever entity) is an appropriate sponsor or not; 100% up to the individual whether they want to be associated with the offering party or not.
2. I am too lazy to dig around, but most reputable articles (that is scientific papers, not pop-science "journalism") indicate that the "porn objectifies women"-view is quite delusional (not to say ... 'bull****').
3. I would hope that even the most hypocritical parents wouldn't associate the sponsorship choices of individual players (what percentage of players is sponsored? 0.000002%?) with the childfriendlyness of the community as a whole.
4. "We are different from them and better than them"... Seriously?

I completely agree, while it may not be as big a deal as we think it is, it's a huge deal. I'm a 14 year old smasher, and I doubt my parents would really like seeing me associating with people largely involved with such shady business.

Yea, but everyone watches porn. Your Dad watches porn. Your local pastor secretly watches porn and then tells other not to. The people who would look down on such a sponsor watch porn.

We need to get over it here in America, extreme violence is okey dokey but not something natural and harmless like sex and nudity. We've just been conditioned and a bit repressed here in this country (mostly by religions).

Exactly how many parents are gonna know that FAKKU and YP are porn sites?

(Admittedly, I didn't even know what YP stood for until this thread lmao)

1) I agree it is up to the individual on whether or not to accept a sponsor. But the individual must be accountable for his or her actions.
2) I'm pretty sure that's not true as I can't think of a logical reason that would be the case.
3) If some kid idolizes bizarro flame and his parents find out he's sponsored by YP, many will get mad and question his or her allegiance to smash. How if goes.
4) I do think the smash community is a fantastic community that is better than other fighting game communities in some aspects but that is my opinion and it is totally fine if you disagree.

That doesn't change the fact that all of them will criticize you for watching or associating with porn :p This is America. Also bandwagon is bandwagon.

There is a big difference in tolerating vulgar language and being directly associated with vulgar actions.

All I'm saying is that the community deserve better than this. Because we do. And this does have the potential to be dangerous for the community.

I think it's pretty shameful because it's reviving some terminology that was starting to die, and it's also just not very acceptable in the culture in which we live.

They don't exactly perform anything related to said vulgar actions. They "promote" a vulgar site. It really isn't that much more extreme as someone mentioning their genitals.

How dare you trivialize the importance of such an amazing and selfless organisation as YP.

Calm down people, its just porn and its just a sponsorship. I am honestly shocked that people are making such a big deal out of this, its not like their showing clips between all of Bizz's matches.

Oh and btw OP, saying that melee is better than other Esports is an incredibly stupid thing to say.

Sexuality and therefore pornography are part of normal human life. I don't see the shady part about it; too many people still have sticks up their rear ends regarding this topic. But as pornography is an adult topic (legally), I can see complications with it being associated with a game that has a lot of audience in below 18 year olds.
Personally, I couldn't care less though.

The thing is whereas the game is marketed to younger audience, the competitive scene lends itself to a more mature audience. My 5 and 10 year old brothers who play smash bros with their friends and just press b over and over again are not going to magically be exposed to porn because Bizz wears a YP tag.

If a child gets exposed to pornography because of a logo that says "YP" that's a failure of their parents, not our community.

Take your preaching somewhere else.

Man you are reaching.

Does pornography have ethical problems? Yes
Is sexism a problem? Yes
Are those problems everywhere? Yes
Is this destructive or anymore harmful than anything else? Highly doubt it

I think one thing about being younger than most of the community is that we understand your scope better than you understand ours. You're going to get to a point in your life where porn is either a normal thing or you just don't care at all because it's not that gripping and you don't have to watch it, care about it, think about it, or support it.

I don't like the idea of children watching porn and I'm not going to encourage it but news flash there's such thing as the unrestricted internet. Not only that but it is so laughable if anyone believes that Team YP is making people do something they don't want to do. Children also have friends who like to seek out and talk about taboo things. Acting like children don't have exposure to lewd ideas from early adolescence is just ignorant, incorrect, and leads to trying to find the incorrect answer. YP owning an esports team is just something you're either not really going to care about or will have to get over. This is really the same idea as saying something like the alcohol in a situation caused a r4pe to happen (not you know, the rapist having that intention) and guns & knives kill people (not the person holding the weapon).

How do you know what porn is?

Massive already said it best to be honest. If this is the straw that breaks the camel's back then you are either a weak individual, weak parent, you wanted to partake in what YP offers, or you're oblivious to every other bigger issue with the internet, technological age, and free speech.

This is like saying we should destroy the people who make those cliche riffs and cheesy electronic drops for video game and stream ads because it encourages people to listen to ****ty music.

Honestly I agree with this. I'm not exactly fond with the idea of pornography, it's just degrading to people imo. And considering this is a game a lot of children pick up and a player is sponsored by a porn company just sounds bleh. Then again, I just find porn one of the more degrading things of humanity in general, whether you're an adult or not.

Just because you think porn is an affront to humanity (personally I think it degrades and misrepresents sex but that's about it) doesn't mean we can pretend it doesn't exist. Realistically YouPorn is not marketing towards young children and young children are not going to be affected by it. The people seeing and understanding the YP tag will be old enough to handle it.

This really is a nonissue thus far. There are no questionable ads being placed anywhere. There are no questionable things being done. The logo isn't, in any way, suggestive of anything inappropriate. I, for one, didn't even know YP stood for YouPorn until I looked at this thread and finished reading the article. I called up my parents and asked them if they knew what YP was, nothing. Even called up a few aunts and uncles, the only one that did was an uncle that I forgot was into Dota.

And in regards to the stuff about children. The same parents who would have a problem with this thing that will likely never effect them or their children are the same parents that typically do not allow their children to engage themselves in any sort of competitive gaming scene in the first place. My parents are the kind that would've had a problem with this when I was younger and I can assure you that they had problems with everything else too. The people you're asking us to cater to are the same unreasonable types that the world is, or at least should be, trying to move away from catering to in the first place.

All that being said. This doesn't even have anything to do with us.

Hypothetically, let's just pretend that everyone agrees pornography is morally reprehensible and we disapprove of YP sponsoring a Smash player.

How do you go about that practically? Ban Bizarro Flame from tournaments? Refuse to stream his matches? Deny him venue entry because of his jersey? At the end of the day, this would all create more controversy and thus attention, effectively backfiring on our attempt to dissociate Smash and porn in the first place.

I think that your practical best course of action, if you're of the same opinion as OP, is to just let it slide and treat it like just another sponsor. I'd be willing to bet that YP is banking on commentators joking about it and calling attention to it, whereas other sponsors rarely get much attention/discussion.

Good point about commentators commenting about the sponsor. Even bigger talk would come from twitch chat. It definitely gets attention and is pretty much a big massive advertisement. Other sponsors don't get that kind of talk I don't believe.

In regards to the issue, I'm quite the simpleton and don't see it as such a big deal. I thought of it as pretty odd at first, but well the world works pretty odd in general. Spectators at first glance will probably never know what YP means, but commentators (hopefully not) and unavoidably twtich chat will most definitely let spectators know what it is.

The same thing happened a year ago in the FGC. Some player tried to get a Brazzers sponsoship and a handful of people flipped **** like it would kill the FGC. This is a complete nonissue. Porn isn't going to be shown on stream, he's not going to start beating off on the main stage, there aren't going to be naked women following him around. We don't even know what this kind of sponsorship entails. Despite what some people seem to think, porn isn't some great crime against humanity, but personal views of porn should be irrelevant in this isue.

I think there are a lot of misconceptions in this paragraph. I don't think pornography is inherently hurtful or objectifying to women. It isn't exclusively catered to men, though as a guy you probably haven't gone looking for the things girls do. Sex is enjoyed by both genders, it isn't only men who seek stimulation.

Is porn a taboo subject? YES. Is it bad? NO. Somethingsomethingsomething first amendment.

The children argument is a little absurd: 99% of people who play this game are not children. I will cede that minors are a large population, but don't act like this is a child's community. A handful of tournaments across the country are hosted in bars, and the vast majority of the veterans are well into their 20's (and more than a few in their 30's now). From talking to people, I find that college freshmen are the largest demographic of new melee community members, and those people would be mature enough to handle the subject (not to mention they probably already have watched porn since they were ~14).

...bizzarro flame would be the guy sponsored by youporn lol. I wouldn't be surprised if he was involved in porn himself. The uptilts are indisputably orgasmic.

In all seriousness: I'm inclined to agree with the OP, but on slightly different reasoning. Regardless of anyone's views on porn, I'd prefer the smash community didn't collaborate with it. I have nothing against porn and its related businesses, but I cannot see it being good for the image of smash simply because it alienates the many people who are against it. It would be like being sponsored by an abortion clinic: you're automatically turning off about 50% of the support you might've had just because they disagree with the views of one of your sponsors.

On the other hand, bills don't pay themselves. I've known people to do far dirtier things than take sponsorships from porn companies. If more reputable companies want to take over that'd be great, but maybe some of the smash community just has to make do with what they're offered until we can get something a little less controversial, and for that we could even be thankful.

But lastly, I haven't even been aware of this issue until I saw this thread. I think its safe to say for now it isn't really as big of a concern as it might be made out to be. Its not like the evo stream is going to have a brazzers logo on the layout for its stream.

It's not like you're being forced to watch porn by one or two players being sponsored by a porn company. You can still avoid porn completely even if Bizzarro's tag might remind you that porn sites are out there. Bizz certainly won't be on stage naked and ****ing his opponent or anything like that, nothing is being shoved in our faces.

Idiots... A sponsorship is a sponsorship. Nintendo doesn't wanna help us, so we gotta take what we can take.

Who gives a **** if he's sponsored by a team, that is sponsored by a company that produces pornography? It's just people ****ing on camera. They get paid, and nobody is forcing them to do it. They actually get a lot of money for it, and are willing to do extreme things, because they get paid a lot of money for it. Most girls end up regretting it, but so what?

Sure the industry makes a lot more money, compared to the actors. But that's like every other industry.

Nobody is forcing anyone to watch porn. Everyone watches is anyway. Kids of all ages and adults of all ages watch it.

Some people chose not to watch it. I'm actually one of them. I watched too much of it, and it started having a negative effect. So I decided to quit. Just like when you look in the mirror and start looking fat, you decide to stop eating McDonald's for a while. That doesn't mean I won't allow the letters "YP" or "McD" on a stream. It's ****ing silly.

YouPorn is also a huge company. This is actually good for Melee and eSports. ****kk who we associate ourselves with, we need more money in the sport.

Honestly, it's not that big of a deal. If Bizz wants to be sponsored by porn aren't we supposed to respect his decision

not really. people can respect or judge whatever they want, and we can judge or respect them based on what they've chosen and how we feel about it and it's a whole big thing.

like we're seeing right now with the whole EVO SaltySuite situation, GimR personally doesn't want to advertise TeamYP on his broadcast and since he curates the content on his stream he's allowed to prohibit it. And his decision is getting him a ton of social feedback in the form of griping from the community members who think it's unfair or dumb or whatever. it's all just personal opinions and social consequences.

regardless, this isn't a thing that should have a community ruling or anything beyond that.

Well that's because GimR is a bit brainwashed by his religious upbringing....even though the Bible Belt is the highest consumer of pornography and priests molest little children. Hypocrisy and ignorant judgement, the two staples of modern religion.

Either way I think it's sad how close minded people can be about a topic like porn, especially when it's just a logo on a shirt.

After some research tho there isn't anything pornographic in nature on TeamYP's website. No pictures, no videos, not even a link to YouPorn.
In fact the only place you even see the word porn is on their first announcement, which isn't on the first page. And all it is in reference to is the fact that YouPorn has an esports team now. (Again not even a link to the site)
With this info I feel like it is acceptable. They're referred to as TeamYP not TeamYouPorn. They aren't making it about the porn or anything regarding it.

If the issue is with kids seeing this team then managing a way to find the the adult site through the team site, then it's an issue with the parents. If they don't want their kids looking up porn then they should monitor what they do on the internet. Also if they're old enough to be on the internet alone they've probably looked up porn many many times.

If it's an integrity issue... Well there is no issue honestly. Yes people do think porn is a taboo subject which is why we're having this discussion. But in all actuality there isn't anything wrong with it. There are a lot of misconceptions about the people involved. Go follow some pornstars on twitter. See what they do and how they act on day to day basis. They're normal people, just like us. They just have "different" jobs.

I was conflicted at first about this issue at first. But this really isn't an issue whatsoever.
If you don't like porn that's fine, no one is forcing you to like it or have any involvement with it.
It's just a man with TeamYP on his shirt, nothing more.

Or maybe it's because he doesn't want to advertise porn on his all ages stream. Atheists are so quick to blame someone's reasoning on religion rofl

tbh GimR has been a lot more reasonable about this thing than you were about religion just now.

I dont think someone having "YP" before there name is going to have any effect on the game. The few people who know what it is know what it is, but it really is nothing more then just seeing YP Bizarro Flame on the overlay. OP is blowing this way out of proportion.

The issue with Gimr has with it is not that the tag is shoving porn in your face or that eight year old kids will suddenly become addicted to porn after seeing Bizz play. His concern is that big sponsors (such as Nintendo) that could benefit his stream or the scene in general will see an affiliation with pornography which is a taboo, private subject in the world of business and then will not want to be involved with Melee.

Whether this concern is well founded and whether we even want the support of these companies is the real question, not whether or not little kids will start beating off to videos on the Internet.

Due to US laws right now, I am not comfortable with a tag that advertises to kids under the age of 18 about a porn site.

You could argue ethics and what not with this, but I do not think it is appropriate for games that are rated at lowest Teen or younger when US law is pretty firming against any activities that could occur from someone having access to such material or being referenced to such.
