What makes Sonic good?

Recently I've watched a lot of high-caliber Sonic players, but I don't understand how they play the character well to any degree. I literally don't have any memory of EVER losing to Sonic. Even for glory Sonic players are not a challenge in the slightest. I can't play as Sonic well, and I've never played against anyone that can play Sonic well enough to beat me with him.
