Use Mario’s fireball and FLUDD frequently. They are always useful and some matchups feel impossible without them (e.g. Cloud, Lucina, Shulk).

Fireball is great in pretty much every matchup. It is great for applying pressure because you can throw it out and then run in alongside it. Using a fireball at a threatening range will force your opponent to pick an option, which you can use to your advantage. It is also a good way to buy space and time, and obviously when it connects you can get a big conversion.

A lot of Marios use FLUDD for offstage gimps but not enough use it on stage for space/positioning. FLUDD’s different properties have different uses. The best use, in my opinion, is to spray an opponent as they jump, which will push them back and pretty far into the air. As an example, if Lucina walls Mario out with falling aerials in neutral, Mario can spray her as she jumps and it accomplishes several things: it relieves the pressure on Mario, allowing him to move up and take space, and puts Lucina in a disadvantageous position in the air.

Mario is blessed with good tools across the board and can handle any matchup. That being said, Ultimate is a game that is full of zoners who 1) have a disjoint (e.g. Cloud, Lucina, Sephiroth), or 2) have spammy projectiles and good boxing (e.g. Young Link, Pac-Man, R.O.B.). Many characters’ game plans will involve walling Mario out and you will need to utilize Mario’s zone breaking tools to counter this: fireball, FLUDD, fast safe aerials, and good air drift. You will also need to be creative with your mixups.
