:006:LIZARDON VIDEO DISCUSSION:006:

Hey guys, post your Charizard videos here! This thread's main purpose will be for critiquing each other's videos, so don't be afraid to share your VoDs! I'll update this OP as more videos surface, providing links to as many tournament-offical matches as possible. Share away!

MAJOR CHANGES FROM PATCH TO PATCH

As to not invalidate the VoDs of previous patches, here's a quick rundown of the major changes each patch brought. Feel free to browse through the VoDs with these in mind.
- 3.02: NAir used to hit significantly lower [making hitting through platforms much easier] and had a lower knockback trajectory on the last backwards hitbox, making it an effective surprise gimp move. Glide attack and FTilt had disjointed forward hitboxes, making them very safe to use whenever.
- 3.5: Basically everything mentioned above was neutered. Nair is now a bit faster but hits less low and has a higher knockback trajectory on the last backwards hitbox. Glide and FTilt are now less disjointed. The most major change was an increase in glide startup lag, removing a lot of glide tech. VoDs will show much more groundplay because of this.
- 3.6: Glide was reverted back to 3.02 status, allowing many of its old mechanics to return.

I've updated the OP with some of my footage from a small round-robin tournament this past Saturday!

hey would it be cool to have copy of my old thread in here?..
that would probably be dumb, though... hey should i make an archive thread mainly for having a collection of tourney matches?..
Considering that the old threads at Smashmods have been archived, would it be okay if I just included a link to the Smashmods thread instead of having it directly in the OP? I'd rather save the OP for Demo 2.5 videos.

As for tournament matches, I could try to try to differentiate between friendlies and tournament matches in this thread.

yeah that's a good idea... i could also just put the stuff from the old thread in my post up there...
Also i think you should copy the "Combo, etc. Videos" and the "Tips and Tricks" sections over from my thread to the OP... might not be 2.5, but Gallo's vid is awezome... and the tutorial vid of yours is still aplicable and very useful...

It might be a good idea to keep some older videos collapsed in the OP, because although they're archiving the boards at Smashmods, they haven't completely decided yet whether or not the threads will remain open to the public.

In case you want to, here are all the old videos from MaxThunder's thread. If you don't, they'll still be here for anyone who wants to see them.

Neko (Zard) vs Dug (Wolf)
http://youtu.be/punjE6IXOT0

Check em. :V
Glad to see you picking up Charizard, Neko. Nice job getting re-grabs off of DThrow (although to be fair, it seemed like Dug didn't understand the timing for how to tech it). Here are some general comments I had.

- Because Wolf is a fastfaller and most of Charizard's moveset (non-tipped DTilt, jab, BThrow, USmash, etc.) is geared towards launching his opponents, tech chase opportunities will come extremely often in this match-up. You can take your time with these tech chases and, if they're at an edge, cover most of their options with a well-placed DSmash. For example, at 1:16, moving a big forward and charging a DSmash probably would've covered all four of his teching options (tech-in-place, missed tech, techroll away, and techroll towards) and given you more profit than a jab. Another time DSmash would've been a good option is at 2:05, where a tech on a platform is almost always a guaranteed DSmash (Yoshi's Island's platform looks a little too big for total coverage though).
- BThrow is better than DThrow against spacies, in my opinion; you get more time to set up for the tech chase off of BThrow compared to DThrow and off the edge, BThrow -> tipped DTilt can work pretty well against fastfallers (like at 1:11).
- When edgeguarding, I think the best way is to either grab the as Wolf recovers, thus forcing him to land on the stage where you can hit him with edgehopped DAir, or to use the reverse NAir hitbox.
- Charizard's FAir is great now, so you can throw it out more often from of a short-hop or full-hop when comboing.

Good stuff, I'm glad that you're taking an interest in Demo 2.5 Charizard!

I've always taken an interest in Zard, since a while ago. While he's not someone I'll use in tourney (just yet anyways), he's still a pretty fun character.

Despite the length my vid against Lucas is actually two matches lol.

And some critique from the guy who made me take Zard seriously (Metroid) would be awesome. Critique from others is also much appreciated.

Some friendly set's of my Zard vs Marth, Mario, Wario and Sheik (all Ryuker).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DYdS6r2nA7Q
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bBfKTiKm6kA
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xQfq09GD0ZI

Have to get used to being able to reverse glide. Did it by accident once or twice.
You posted a lot of material to watch, so I only looked at your last set.

In general, you played pretty well. You did a nice job of shutting down Sheik with jabs and NAirs, but I think you could've optimized some of the punishes you made on him.

I probably use this move much more than I should, but DSmash is an amazing combo starter and tech chase option. You used it a couple of times out of DThrow, but I never really saw you use it outside of that; even when Sheik landed right next to you in the first Dreamland match, you opted to grab him instead of DSmash. DSmashing is a much better punishing option because on non-floaties (like Sheik), it true combos into Heat Wave pretty consistently at medium percents, regardless of DI (unless they land on a platform or something). The combined damage from this combo and knockback angle of Heat Wave make this option much better than just Seismic Toss. In addition to DSmash -> Heat Wave, jab -> jumping Heat Wave can also be linked at higher %s depending on DI. This option is particularly good if you dash-cancel jab under Sheik's abnormally high short-hop.

As for recovering, you never really used falling NAirs when coming back down to the ground. Falling NAirs aren't really a safe way to approach the opponent, but falling retreating NAirs are fairly safe (but still punishable) if you land on a platform with the tail sticking below it or if you land with the tail in front of Charizard. When coming back from off-stage, try to save your jumps if you know that Sheik is going to needle you; do your best to get under the stage far enough where she's forced to grab the edge, then use your jumps. In addition, you can try mixing up your gliding pattern so that instead of going directly for the edge, you dip down low, cancel the glide when you're below and close to the stage, then jump and up+B. Although this makes you more prone to needle sniping, it may serve as a useful mix-up when used on occasion.

Nice games though, it's good to see some activity in this thread for once. Please continue to post your videos!

yeah, ace still rocking that charizard?
btw, is there a dutch name for charizard?
I only watched the first set so far, and most of the critique i had in mind you fixed by yourself during the matches...
In general you should try using the reverse-jump option we got from brawl to get reverse aerials (nairs mostly xD) on your opponent.

Thanks guys. At this point Zard is my third character after Bowser and Wario. Still need to improve a lot with him.

@Metroid I'll work on incorporating more dsmash/falling nair. I need to practice dash-cancelled jabs. And my recovery as Zard needs a lot of work, thanks for the tips.

@Yomi We don't have dutch names for pokemon, we just use the english ones.

Hey guys, I got some vids recorded from a weekly smashfest we have around my area. I don't really know what other charizards do, since I've never read or watched anything from this place, but I know I should at least start d-smashing, and forward bing more, or heatwave I guess. Anyways, I made a playlist to make things easier to go through, so let me know what you think.

http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL2tmtrTLyRcb3Dqj6KOl2DlHEjgpOCHXI&feature=mh_lolz

Apparently we're going to start recording at all of the smashfests, so if it's a popular opinion, I'll try to get on the setup more, and with other people, and post playlists for the next weeks.

do you want criticism? If yes read spoiler if not don't.
Only watched 2 matches or so thus far, but i feel like you should stop juggling so much with nairs, and instead try to hit with upairs. You can easily get 2 Uairs and a followup UpB without having any risk, while you usually end up resetting the situation after your nairs.
Also, you should consider using downthrow at lower% instead of Uthrow. Save that one for kills. With uthrow you get your opponent above you, to punish them with nairs/usmashes. The worst thing that can happen from a downthrow is you eating a getup attack, and its quite easy to get in a dtilt/regrab/usmash/downsmash/tapA after it, leading into sick combos.
Really liked your backthrow use, finally i can imagine how its usefull after the 2.5 change :) thanks for that!

edit: damn that smiley popping out of that spoiler. kills all the suspense
your charizard looks pretty awesome though! Will we see you get far in tournaments? i think we're still missing good charizard players, haven't really seen anyone getting far in tournaments with him?!

You uploaded a lot of matches - would you mind selecting a couple matches that you want people to focus their commentary on?

I only watched one video (it was against KOKingpin's Snake on PSII), but I was impressed with what I saw. You're right, you should DSmash and side+B more, but you can also use more dash-canceled jabs. However, I was impressed with your use of NAir; you had a pretty cool combo on his third stock.

I can't really say which ones to watch, as I feel like all of them show pretty well how I like to play, and my weaknesses. What I can say though, is that my opponents are better in the matches with ganon, snake, and wario, so I'm actually being forced to play. With that said, I guess one vid vs each of them would be alright, so any of those. Also avoid the ganon match on FD, as I gimp him most of the time, and you can't see how I play really.

I guess my personal favorites are:
vs wario on dreamland
vs ganon on yoshis
and vs snake on that one sonic stage

Also, I'm not very combo oriented, I just tend to get my damage, and get out asap, because I feel like charizard is more of a hit and run, neutral game kinda character. I'm probably just playing him wrong, but I like what I do with him now. I want to add more d-air > tech chase for combo finishers, so I'm going to try implementing that after tipper n-airs at mid%s. Any other critiques and suggestions are welcome.

Oh, I didn't even know that dash canceled jabs were really a thing before, and never thought of using jab like that. I'll definitely try to implement them in, thanks. And to yomi about my choice of u-throw in most situations, it's kind of for the reason I posted above, I prefer taking things to the neutral game that I'm comfortable with, while I've had limited success with d-throw, especially vs characters that have fast/invincible wakeup options (snake/bowser upb, shines etc) after neutral teching. Thanks for the comments, they're much appreciated. I'll try to take Zard as far as I can in tourney I guess xD, at least until I'm comfortable with what they do with Yoshi. (I call Zard big yoshi)

DAir tech chases are most useful if you force them to land onto a platform, otherwise it's not that helpful because it doesn't lead to any guaranteed follow-ups. If you ever land a DAir or DSmash on a grounded opponent, side+B and glair are both good followups for horizontal KOs (side+B moreso than glair) and up+B is amazing for vertical KOs.

I probably dash-cancel jab the most out of any Charizard. It's really good as an anti-air, combo-starter, and an approach. Charizard had the 4th-fastest dash in Demo 2.1, so when used in conjunction with DTilt and grab, it was a nice way to chase down dash-dancing opponents.

Hmm interesting. I see Zard as a combo machine who struggles with projectile spam and is combo food himself. Could be my Falcon background.

Uploading two more sets vs Mario and Sheik in a little bit.

Edit: here they are

Using dsmash on Sheik's recovery. Thanks for that tip Metroid. Also just missed the upB on my first combo of the second set or I would've had an awesome zero to death :(.

Great stuff man, I was actually able to catch the second set of GFs live, it was awesome to watch. Your combos are definitely on another level that I need to catch up to, though I'm definitely learning a lot fast about following up better. Even with how amazing your combos were, I feel like there's still plenty of room to increase the metagame in zard followups that I'm finally realizing. I've taken your advice to try adding dc jabs, and a ton of d-smash and heatwave to my game, and immediately felt like I had been playing with a crutch the entire time, so thanks for the tips. Though people really need to learn to DI b-throw so it doesn't feel so free >.>

Anyways I feel like you could really improve your game with better use of n-air though. Most of the instances I saw you use it in were either not spaced terribly well, or used as a short hopped approach, which isn't all that great. N-air is fantastic as a defensive tool, and I almost always purposefully will face away from my opponent, using tippered n-airs to pressure just before I land, as their unpunishable that way, and with the insane start-up and hitbox, you catch a lot of people off guard trying to come at you, it also puts you in a great position for approaching with grab/jab/dash dance baiting if shielded. Though I do realize our styles are completely different, and that might not be something you want to focus on too much, as setting up the rather specific positioning is kinda difficult in and of itself.

I feel like a bit more patience would help you out as well, you seem to rely a bit too much on reads for your d-smash tech-chases, and as noted before, got punished a bunch for some approaches that didn't seem to be planned out terribly well, from over agression (you have much more success staying grounded in your approach game). The missed d-smashes weren't too bad as they go mostly unpunished (the move is kinda stupid with how good it is), but when I watch the in-your-face style you have, I feel like letting people go free is something that should be avoided, and maybe easier reactable jab/u-smash/grab chases might be more beneficial occasionally, or react to wake up to d-air on platforms instead of automatically wavelanding to d-smash in those situations.

I really do like your charizard though, you're easily the best around, and you've definitely convinced me to continue him seriously, so I'll be stealing a lot from you. I look forward to more vids, and fully expect you to not leave winners next tourney. : P I also hope I don't offend you with critiqueing, as some people are a little touchy on that.

No worries man, thanks a lot for the feedback! Yeah, I tend to use short-hopped NAir too much... I used to throw it out way more and get CC'd for it lol. It's a continuing habit that I need to cut down on. I'm also pretty bad at covering techs with DSmash, I realize that I never feint where I'm going to go, so my opponents just wait for me to run somewhere and then roll the other way; I have to mix it up a lot more. I'm glad these videos gave you some ideas, feel free to steal stuff so we can get people to stop overlooking Charizard ;). Again, thanks a lot for the feedback!

who do u favor in 2.5 more metroid, ike or charizard? ive seen a lot more gameplay of u in 2.5 with zard, at least thats all that IVE seen. i feel charizard in 2.5 was given just the right amount of tweaks to make him equally as competitive as ike. hes not my main, but i play him a lot, and ive felt much more at home with him than 2.1 zard.

Thanks for the positive comments, guys :).

awesome vids metroid, really impressed with your win over kels... Dat Downtilt gimp!
Kels didn't know how to DI the BThrow at all... I think with more match-up experience, he'll start beating me as usual lol.

At the moment, I find both characters very fun to play, but I've put so much more time into Charizard as of late that I use only him in tournaments. My Ike doesn't do as well as my Charizard, probably because (1) he's a little rusty and (2) IL has a lot of match-up experience against him now, unlike when Demo 2.0 just came out.

Personally, I think Charizard is in a great spot in terms of viability right now, but his Glide and Flamethrower may need some addressing in the future. I'm not going to dwell on that too much though, I'm just going to focus on developing what he currently has.

interesting. his glide definitely has a lot more use and mobility now however than it did in 2.1. i love the glide attack too. i have definitely noticed that flamethrower has much more situational usage, especially when compared to bowser, who can make good use of flame cancels and a wider spread.

WS is partly there but game 1 and the end of game 3 are gone : (

I have a link of it in the ZSS video thread. Mind if I use your link for our pools set?
