Shulk and Wario Match-Up Discussion Thread
GOALS:
-Determine best / worst stages for Wario in Matchup
-Determine best ways to DI from common combo moves
-Find at least one high level match of Shulk vs Wario ✔
-Determine best approach to edgeguarding Wario or Shulk
-Determine optimal playstyles for the matchup
-Confirm or deny the information in Shulk101

OK. So almost all of these goals have been met now.

¤ Determine best / worst stages for Wario in Matchup
  • Duck Hunt - Usually a favorite if it's not banned - Wario likes to camp and charge waft usually
  • Smashville - Favorite otherwise. Early kills off sides and some platform camping allowed
  • FD - Usually pretty liked
  • Lylat Cruise - Some like it, some don't
  • T&C - Wario doesn't get many vertical kills. Likes stage against low mobility chars
  • Battlefield - Not bad, but approaching can be pretty hard if they lose the lead. They aren't very prone to juggling however thanks to the air speed/air acceleration/bike.
  • Dreamland 64 - Often disliked. Blows bike offstage.
¤ Determine best ways to DI from common combo moves
There is no real for sure way to DI against Wario's common combo moves. It's pretty much just trying to mix up your DI. What are his common combo moves though?
  • Nair (into anything)
  • Uair (into anything, even waft)
  • Dair (esp w/ rage)
  • Dtilt
  • IF WE ARE IN JUMP AT LOW PERCENT: Possibly Uthrow
    • MAKE SURE TO ALWAYS TECH - THEY HAVE GOOD JAB LOCKS
¤ Find at least one high level match of Shulk vs Wario ✔
We have a few. All of them are on Shulk101.

¤ Determine best approach to edgeguarding Wario or Shulk
So us edgeguarding him up to personal preference. You can beat out his bike with Fair or Bair easily. Don't expect him to be easy to edgeguard though. He may often recover high with the bike - be prepared for that.

Him edgeguarding us can be a few things. Dair at ledge and dash attack are both good at catching our autosnap. Be sure to space away from him with air slash while recovering, to hit him away if he tries anything like this! Now for the bike at the ledge -- and aft at the ledge. If he manages to get his bike on the ground at the edge and you're trying to recover on that ledge, you're probably boned. Waft will have its hitbox extended very long from the bike, and due to the vast size of the hitbox it will completely cover the edge. If you try to air slash to get to the edge during this time, you will probably die. And it also covers ALL get up options. If you do manage to get on the edge though - the best option is to roll. You will still get hit, but you will be hit left rather than right, and die later, potentially saving you. SOLUTIONS?? ---Scrooge, MALS without grabbing edge, jumping up and over him in monado jump, air dodging as you do so... that's really it though.

¤ Determine optimal playstyles for the matchup
Wario's probably going to want to try to camp you out to charge his waft. Wario's tend to play campy in general for this reason. We want to play an active defense or an offense game. We want to rely very little on shielding, and also Monado Shield (which is susceptible to the camping and also his neutral b, chomp). Monado Shield CAN be used while waft is fully charged however, and mixed with Monado Jump stalling to try to make the Wario waste it.

¤ Confirm or deny the information in Shulk101
Pretty much all the information on Shulk101 is correct, except for the stages information and possibly the DI information.

¤ Attempt an understanding of the framework of this matchup. How does the MU work? What is unique about this matchup?
