Here's a little something I've been working on lately! Feel free to give your opinions!

Vote Arle Nadja for SMASH!
As a step in an ongoing drive to get people to vote for Arle Nadja in the Smash Bros Fighter Ballot, this text and its author aim to explain to you why this is something you should want to do post-haste!

What is the Smash Bros. Fighter Ballot?

In case you don't know...

The Smash Bros Fighter Ballot is a world-wide online voting campaign Nintendo is holding, where people can vote for a single character to join the Smash Bros 4 roster. Smash Bros is a fighting game series where, historically, popular Nintendo characters have battled it out for supremacy and fun, however in the last two installments of the series, Mario and Link and other well-known Nintendo names have been joined by the likes of Sonic, Pac-Man, and Megaman.

Everyone who was young in the late 80's, early 90's has dreamed of this moment.

They allow you to vote for any game character, but likeliness is a factor. They haven't said specifically what criteria they'll choose the eventual addition(s) on, but popularity will probably play a part, as well as how easy it is to get the rights for the character(s) in question - third-party characters are less likely, basically! But still possible since they already have characters from Namco, Capcom and Sega games in there, duking it out.

Screenshot of the US ballot page. There are slight differences depending on from which region you access it.

Now! There're plenty of people who're voting for plenty of characters, but what this text and its author ask of you is, if you haven't decided on a character to vote for, then vote Arle Nadja from the Puyo puzzle game series and the Madou Monogatari series of old-school JRPGs!

Who is Arle Nadja?

Her favourite colour is blue. Her birthday is July 22nd. Blood type AB.

In short terms, Arle Nadja is the female main character of two game series: Madou Monogatari, an old JRPG series, and Puyo, a more modern puzzle game series. She is a young, brave, cheerful wizard. After being thrown between dimensions, she travels with the cute, rabbit-like monster Carbuncle to find a way back to her home world (although she doesn't seem too eager, as she always seems to enjoy herself, wherever she is).

Madou Monogatari (1990) - the style was much less "pop" back then.

In her first appearance in Madou Monogatari (1990), she was a 6-year-old wizard's apprentice who had to journey into a cave as a test to earn her magic.
This game and its sequels introduce the series' trademark silly humour, such as the tea-loving skeleton enemies Arle has to fight. Otherwise, they are visually more serious and fantasy-inspired than the newer games in the series.

"Sorry, but no. It's a gold mine!" - Sega

The Madou Monogatari games did well enough and had many sequels, but eventually, the off-shoot puzzle games became more popular. Puyo Puyo Fever (2004), known as Puyo Pop Fever in the west, introduced the modern "pop" look. Arle herself also stopped being the main character, but still remains a central and important character in the games.

Puyo Puyo Tetris (2014) - exactly how or why the puzzles work to allow the characters to cast spells and "attack" each other is never really explained...

Her latest appearance is in Puyo Puyo Tetris (2014), which mixes the most popular puzzle game series in Japan with the most popular puzzle game series in the rest of the world. By this time, she's gone from a beginner wizard to a master at the tender age of 16 - according to her official biography!

Arle's design for Puyo Puyo Tetris (2014) - she claims to wear the same clothes every day of the year. Good thing games don't allow you to smell things... Yet.
Why should I vote for her?

Why Arle? Well... Lemme give you a few reasons!

  • Arle is a cool character and she has a decent following in Japan, so if we show Nintendo and Masahiro Sakurai (the Smash Bros director) she has followings in the Americas and the Europes, they might think harder about adding her! That's why she needs YOU!

Look! She's definitely there! I wasn't lying!
  • While fairly unknown in the west, she does have a respectable history as a game icon, appearing in more than 30 games over the last 25 years. In Japan, she is one of the most well-known Sega characters and as recognizable as the L-block in Tetris as far as puzzle game mascots go - here in the west, her design and game series are more of an underground thing. Are you hipster enough?

  • She can use various types of magic and puyos to fight - how magically puzzling! Coming from a long RPG series AND a puzzle game series, it'd be exciting to see how the Smash Bros team decides to translate her many abilities into attacks in the game - some fans have already given their own opinions on thematter, online. Would she be a control-type character that sets up puyos on the stage for combos, or a Ganondorf-clone?

  • She's smart and brave and funny and positive - a great role model for anyone! Whereas most games seem to prefer the dark, brooding characters, Arle is colourful and cheerful - which allows her to fit in with the other Nintendo characters nicely! It's easy imagining her having a cup of tea with princess Peach, or solving puzzles with Dr. Mario...

  • She's a strong female character, and Smash needs more strong female characters! As of this document's conception, the ratio of female-to-male characters is circa 1-4 (some characters have unknown genders or allow you to play as a male and female version, so it's difficult to calculate properly - out of 55 playable characters, there are 11 clearly female characters). Compared to some games, this is a respectable ratio, but most people would agree it can be much better. Arle can make it better.

  • She'd be another beloved Sega character added to the roster, next to Sonic! Capcom has two respresentatives in Megaman and Ryu from Street Fighter, so why not Sega?

  • Her crazy world and game series would make for fun Smash-like stages and Assist trophies! As a stage, perhaps we'd see the school where kids learn how to manipulate multi-coloured slime in battle? As Assists, maybe we'd see Schezo, the brave swordsman who keeps getting taken as a pervert because everything he says sounds suggestive, or Risukuma, the squirrel-bear student who is mad about love?

  • Awesome additional music and remixes! The main composer for the series, Hideki Abe, has a worldwide following for his peppy and dynamic tunes. Add to this the fact that Smash Bros has rearrangements of popular Zelda and Mario music done by musical heavyweights like Yoko Shimomura (Kingdom Hearts series) and Michiru Yamane (Castlevania series) and we're sure to get some high quality theme songs if she makes it in!

  • From Nintendo's viewpoint as a company, while Arle's inclusion would not directly advertise their games or boost sales, it'd make Nintendo consoles more interesting in the long run. Since most of her current games are released for Nintendo consoles (sometimes exclusively!), introducing the Puyo series to new puzzle gamers would give them more incentive to stay loyal to the Nintendo brand, between Dr. Mario, Tetris, and Puyo! Considering her most recent appearance was in a Tetris/Puyo mashup, perhaps her inclusion in Smash could open the gates for a Dr Mario/Puyo crossover...?

  • She's cute! That might sound like a poor excuse, but consider the fact that each character in a game's roster brings their own appeal, and therefore attracts a different type of player. Arle has a peppy but brave, young fantasy heroine-type of appearance and manneurisms, which no other Smash character has! She'd definitely draw new players to the game!

Arle and Carbuncle need YOU!
Where can I vote?

So everything sounds good so far, right? Good! Then here's where you vote:

Europe (UK): https://cp.nintendo.co.jp/en-uk/
Americas (US): https://cp.nintendo.co.jp/us/
There're also other regions and languages to choose from, if you enter from the main page: http://www.smashbros.com/

You CAN vote as many times as you feel like, but they ask you to keep your vote to one character. Chances are, if you spam their inboxes, they won't count your votes! This text and its author recommends keeping your voting to one, MAYBE two, different characters!

Although no official word has yet gone out about how the results will be tallied or how many characters will be added, Masahiro Sakurai, the director of Smash Bros, has hinted that there will be more than a few. If we band together and show him that Arle is wanted across the globe, she has a good chance of becoming a playable character in the future!

Voting in the Smash Bros Fighter Ballot is open until October 3rd.

Thank you on behalf of this text's author for taking your time to read this and, if you vote Arle, for voting Arle! Your help is muchly appreciated!

I knew someone would make this sooner or later. Love Arle and she will always be the original Puyo Pop protagonist in my view. She would be perfect for Smash, even if she only have massive support in Japan.

Seems like the closest we'll get to an actual elin in this.

Has she appeared on a Nintendo platform?

Yes! Of course! Honestly, you don't know how long I've been mulling over making a thread for her!

Oh yes! Believe it or not, but I can safely say that her (MUCH more famous) series, Puyo Puyo (known as Puyo Pop in the West) has appeared on literally just about EVERY Nintendo console to date, starting with the Famicom (NES) no less! (Or at least, ALL Nintendo consoles with the exception of the Virtual Boy, at least.)

She's definitely got my support, I was pretty into Puyo Puyo about 2 or 3 years ago. While I do prefer Amitie from a design standpoint, Arle has been the protagonist since the very beginning, so if anyone from the series deserves a spot it's definitely her. Primp Town or Satan's Tower could make some pretty cool stages as well. Also, I'll except nothing less than a remix of this as her trailer theme. (Just kidding)

You know, you might need to show this to the SEGA Character Poll thread on here. Maybe you'll get a bit more feedback. Also, may I suggest a support group name for this thread? Maybe Puyo Poppers?

BTW, here's the link to the thread: http://smashboards.com/threads/sega-rep-character-poll.411439/

BTW, @Dotsies! Thanks for making this thread! I've been thinking about doing for some time, but I never got to it.

Will do!
Support group name hmmm... "They call themselves Poppers. Fanatical people who push their agenda onto any social media they can access, forcing people to vote for Sega mascot Arle Nadja's inclusion for Nintendo franchise Super Smash Bros."
Sounds good to me!

I'm a bit divided on this character choice.

I'm mainly a supporter of Lip from Panel de Pon, which is Nintendo's flagship puzzle game franchise. I'd love to see these two be rivals, but I don't want to give Lip much more opposition since she is quite similar to Arle.

Maybe if in the future they did a Nintendo vs. Sega Smash game...

Yeah, I feel the same way strongly, but I don't mind if either gets in.

Big fan of Puyo Puyo here and I honestly wouldn't mind her. I also support Lip, but I think since Arle's pretty much popular and prominent today in puzzle game industry, I might even think she would be more suitable choice over time.

I guess she'd be a contestor to Zelda, only using magic in her attacks, and Carbuncle even possibly assisting her in some of them. But that's her shtick.

Anyway, she would use these spells in Smash
  • Fire: Shoots fire at the enemy.
  • Ice Storm: Shoots ice at the enemy.
  • Di-Acuteness (Diacute): Makes your next spell more powerful.
  • Bayoen: Tries to stun the enemy.
  • Heedon: Tries to put the enemy to sleep.
  • Bayohihihi: Gives you a temporary shield. (This would be her shield animation, powered up more by Diacute)
  • Jugem: Sends a magic ball at the enemy — if the spell succeeds, it will contain a very powerful blast that will try to knock the enemy out of the tower. (Possibly a concept for a Final Smash, or an RNG-based ball of magic coming sometimes in her attacks that would deal some knockback)

Anyway, knowing how she functioned in her own games, she could deploy something decently unique in her playstyle: Diacute-stacking.

In Madou Monogatari, the most optimal tactic to win in the games was to stack Diacute-spell about many times as you can, before unleashing an immense barrage of spells on your opponent. Arle thus should have Diacute as her special, strenghening her magic spells to quite powerful levels and use them to take on different types of opponents - Something like Lucas's Offense Up in Project M. But this would render her easier to KO and take damage more harshly, translating to the fact that Arle would always take a turn in Madou Monogatari whenever using Diacute for stacking, rendering her open for attacks.

However, to ensure Diacute isn't spammable, Arle would deploy an unique type of magic meter sort of invisible from the interface. Using Diacute and possibly other spells aside from basic Fire and Ice Storm would train some pints of magic she has. To see this, you got to see what her expression and body language would be like. If she's mostly happy and cheerful, her magic's still fine. If her expressions more neutral, it's got some use left. If she's looking distressed and dizzy, her magic's basically out.

To restore up her magic, she might have to call in Pakista or other merchant from Madou Monogatari-games, I guess? Still working on this.

Diacute could also modify her spells to different forms possibly, maybe strengthening in range and power the more she stacks up. Arle would feel very straightforward obviously due this, but that's how she is.

But yeah.

Wow, this is a really well thought I idea. The diacute stacking that's done in the original Madou games is very similar to stacking Puyo, something that would not only make her a unique character but also a great way to represent what Puyo as a whole is about, stacking...not only stacking, but seeing how much you can stack--how far you can go before unleashing everything on your opponent. Even the risk is like playing a game of Puyo, while your spell(s) become more powerful the more time you take to stack, the more you leave yourself at risk to be hit just as hard. I especially love the whole "gauging how much magic she has by facial expression," that's a reference to the original Madou where the only way you could tell how much health Arle had was by that same method, right?

While I'm not exactly sure where her spells would go in her full moveset, I imagine that Bayoen or Fever Mode (since they would probably want something from the modern puyo games) would be her final smash.

I'm also a supporter of Lip (though I haven't posted anything in the thread in ages) and thought about this too. Realistically only one of them would probably get in, though there's no harm in supporting both.

But yeah.
This is a great moveset! You know, I suppose it's only fair to mention that Arle is the only 3rd party character I voted for. Don't get me wrong, I still want Lip, but Arle actually shows up in her games (Every one to date, at that) and she seems to have a lot of options to work with. I even suggested when I voted for her that Amitie (Main protagonist of the series' Fever-era) and Ringo, (Main protagonist of the series' "Modern"-era) could serve as alt. skins of Arle, in the style of Olimar and Alph. With some assistance from Carbuncle, no less. Possibly firing lasers at her opponents.

Actually, if you ever played current Puyo Puyo-games since Fever, you might have noticed that during very powerful chains have characters actually stutter the first syllables of their spells while unleashing it. This actually throws back to Madou Monogatari which had this same effect after you'd use a spell after casting Diacute (with stuttering being multiplied by the amount you had casted Diacute before your spell attack).

Check this battle with Cait Sith for example from original MSX-sneak peek:

But yep, that's basically about it. In fact, I think Puyo Puyo does what you thought, stacking up Puyos for multiplying magic power to overthrow down the opponent - fascinating way to make a pioneer versus puzzler spinoff series today, huh?

Lip's Stick more or less translates similar thing, but Arle would apply this in her own fashion, with straightforward but still decently strategic playstyle.

I especially love the whole "gauging how much magic she has by facial expression," that's a reference to the original Madou where the only way you could tell how much health Arle had was by that same method, right?
Basically. I think body language should be emphasized though as to ensure that you're not forced to watch Arle's face from say, bigger stages all the time. But yeah.

While I'm not exactly sure where her spells would go in her full moveset, I imagine that Bayoen or Fever Mode (since they would probably want something from the modern puyo games) would be her final smash.
Fever would be quite fun idea for a Final Smash, since it lets her use preset Puyo Chains to powerup her magic to OP levels.

Yeah, Arle's face would probably be a bit hard to see on big stages...Anyways, for those who don't know, Arle was highly requested by Japanese fans as the most requested SEGA character who was NOT a Sonic character. Even then, it's likely Sakurai could choose a character from a different series rather than use another Sonic character. I guess we'll have to see.

I knew someone would make this sooner or later. Love Arle and she will always be the original Puyo Pop protagonist in my view. She would be perfect for Smash, even if she only have massive support in Japan.

@ smashkirby smashkirby do you want to join?

I'm also a supporter of Lip (though I haven't posted anything in the thread in ages) and thought about this too. Realistically only one of them would probably get in, though there's no harm in supporting both.
You just gotta up and do it mayne!

Will do!
Support group name hmmm... "They call themselves Poppers. Fanatical people who push their agenda onto any social media they can access, forcing people to vote for Sega mascot Arle Nadja's inclusion for Nintendo franchise Super Smash Bros."
Sounds good to me!
Hey guys, I've been meaning to ask, what do you all think Arle's reveal trailer could be like, out of curiosity?

BTW, @Dotsies! Thanks for making this thread! I've been thinking about doing for some time, but I never got to it. BTW, you should check this out: http://jbx9001.deviantart.com/art/Amitie-in-SSB4-522422894 Something I came across quite some time ago. Arle could use this moveset, and maybe have Amitie and Ringo as alt. skins!
Finally got around to making a profile; but yeah, thanks again for sharing my idea here beforehand! I agree Arle would be a perfect choice for SEGA's second rep in Smash! Granted, my preference is for them to go with Amitie, but that's only because she's personally my favorite character from the series. So whether they use Arle or Amitie, I'll be happy (of course, if they decide to do the alternate skin deal like I mentioned in my picture the link goes to, that'd be even better)!

Wow! You finally joined! That's great! I'm sure Arle would need as many supporters as she could get, considering there's two months left in the ballot!

Well, looks like Arle has a new supporter! @ZestyN! He said can't guarantee anything on voting for her, but he supports her nonetheless!

Yeah like @ smashkirby smashkirby said I'm supporting now. I'll be voting Ice Climbers until they get in though :p. BTW am I the only one that prefers the newer design?

The second one.

I don't know why, I guess because it's different (I'm getting tired of the FE look which the first one sports really well), but I like it a lot.

Actually, you have a point. I'm also a vibe of Ike's armor from the first one. I guess I just enjoy that look for Arle even more though. I believe it comes from Puyo Puyo 4. Mainly, I like that for the anime art-style they went for. It looks like a good fit for Smash if they don't go the Puyo Puyo Fever route. (The second, more cartoonish art style.)

Excuse me @Azure Warrior, do you still have @PushDustIn's poll? It could probably be put to decent use in the OP.

You mean this old thing? Sure, you can use it in the OP since Horsetail is doing it for his Valkyrie topic.

Did PushDustin just translate the results, or did he create this poll altogether with? Up to this point I was under the impression this was a Nintendo poll.

He simply gathered the data from many Japanese communities and calculated them before releasing them on his blog. It's not necessarily a poll per se, but more of a round up of who the Japanese community wants as DLC. You can simply ask @ PushDustIn PushDustIn yourself if you have any more questions. ;)

That's correct. You can view this post for additional information. I manually counted references to characters, and organized the results in the pie-graph you see there.

I've read this, great work, it's really interesting. Maybe this isn't the appropriate place for this, but you mentioned that the Ice Climbers would probably be more popular if there weren't a reason for them being eliminated (or something along those lines). The question is, how popular are we talking here? More popular then Snake? Wolf? Lucas (at the time obviously)?

If only Sega were here to see this. Too bad they would care more about Sonic than any other character. :urg:

http://www.sourcegaming.info/2015/08/22/japantopdlcpart1/
You don't know how much I agree with you. If anything, the one Sonic character I would take, completely out of personal preference would have to be Tails. If I had NO choice whatsoever, and neither Tails nor Arle were chosen, I'd go for Knuckles. Still though, let's all hope Arle's popularity in Japan, which is currently GREATLY helped by the on-going mobile game, Puyo Puyo!! Quest, is taken notice of. At least, I REALLY hope so. As I've said on a couple of SEGA-related character threads, The SEGA characters I'll happily accept are: Tails, Arle Nadja, (Puyo Puyo) AiAi, (Super Monkey Ball) Amigo, (Samba de Amigo) Billy Hatcher, Alex Kidd, Ryo Hazuki, (Shenmue) Beat (Jet Set Radio), and I know these next ones are WAY out of left-field, (just like Arle, actually) but Opa Opa (Fantasy Zone), Ulala, (Space Channel 5) ChuChus, (Chuih, ChuPea, ChuBei, and ChuBach) (Chu Chu Rocket!) and B.D. Joe (Crazy Taxi)

EDIT: Whoops, almost forgot! The legendary SEGATA SANSHIROOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!! (Even though out of all my SEGA choices, even ARLE would have a better shot than him!)

It's amazing. I would think knowing SEGA, they would think Puyo Puyo would have a really safe place on mobile worldwide. I can see now I was wrong.:( Still, can someone tell me what THIS might mean?: https://www.segalization.com/2015/0...ranchise-x-love-live-collaboration-puyo-puyo/
Looks like Puyo Puyo is still showing it's popularity, and still has a chance. I don't know what that other game is that it's going to be crossing over with, but as long as it gets localized we're in good hands.
