It's true, Utah has no character diversity.

Also I will be back in town Thursday night/Friday, so the later the better for a smashfest.

I stand proudly as the only Link main in the Southwest.

Friday would be best for me for a Smashfest. You live in southern Salt Lake Valley right?

EDIT: If Friday doesn't work, I can probably make Wednesday any time after 2pm.

lol Gangstakirby comes to every tournament and bunch of smashfests >_> He should be more than enough to be recognized as our kirby main.

Oh yeah and I officially play DDD. After Genesis I decided to actually make him my secondary. So now its Diddy/DDD forever. Won't pick up anyone else.

Many of the smashers around here are quite good with more than one character, so a good portion of the cast gets representation to some extent. If most of the local scene was just MK and Snake I probably would have quit playing a while ago. (why I never bothered with the melee scene).

Smashfest sounds fun, too bad I am gone until friday, have fun.

LOL I totally forgot about Gkirb. My bad.

Anyways, I'm still not changing my opinion that we need more good characters in Utah. And Flying J, I wouldn't consider most Utah people's secondaries legit enough to count as representation/character experience. (If that's the case, I used to main random and every character has representation )

Pick up Marth, Rade.

And Joke's a joke for locking the keys in the car when it's running XD

Edit: Marsulus, you should come! :D

We don't even come close to using everyone...

That kirby is gone now...

The pit player doesn't really play anymore...

Joke uses wario but he's leaving at the end of the month, so in the end I'm the only one left who's put any real time into him XD

The only DDDs are X and Dark Ryu's that they rarely use...

Who uses Peach?

Edit: Just for fun XD

Bowser- Lanky plays him every now and then.
Captain Falcon- a couple people use him just for fun
Diddy- Dryu ***** with diddy. Lanky uses some diddy as well.
DK- Staz plays him
Falco- A couple people second him
Fox- Rade mains him
G&W- NO ONE
Ganondorf- a couple people play for fun
Ics- NO ONE
Ike- Staz used to main him >_>
Jigglypuff- NO ONE
DDD- a couple people use him every now and then
Kirby- Our Kirby just left on a mission, so NO ONE
Link- Anonano
Lucario- Sage
Lucas- NO ONE
Luigi- NO ONE
Mario- NO ONE
Marth- NO ONE
MK- Yaz
Ness- Rockmix
Olimar- Dryu seconds him
Peach- Final? One other person I can't remember?
Pikachu- NO ONE
Pit- Fate doesn't play, so NO ONE
PT- Rade kinda plays him
ROB- Lada mains him
Samus- NO ONE
Sheik- Rade kinda plays him
Snake- Me :) Then Lanky, Spudz, and a few other people play him.
Sonic- X mains him
Toon Link- Rade kinda plays him
Wario- I second/main him
Wolf- NO ONE
Yoshi- NO ONE
Zelda- NO ONE
ZSS- NO ONE
If I missed anyone, I blame it on you not playing them enough for me to recognize.

So as you can see, there are like 20~ characters that aren't used seriously in Utah. I blame my Genesis placing on this, cause the only characters I lost to I never fight XD

/rant
Peach = Final and Hank
Pit = Skyray/Jesus
Yoshi = Rade and Spudz (we have both used him in tourney matches)
Wolf = Juber (but he hasnt come to a tourney for a while)
And didnt Staz use Ice Climbers?

Hmm I don't see any threads related to the EVO Smash side tourney; anyone know if there's a place we can check on the brackets there? Did any of our smashers go besides my two friends (who none of you have met- they only play casually yet are going to EVO :dizzy:)?
Zack and I, along with 20 other Utah players, just got back from playing SF4 at EVO. We didn't play any smash at all, though.

Lanky (aka Colbusman) will PM us his address once he's got the date figured out, so don't worry.

I don't know if you've been practicing your Link at all Marsulas, but if you feel up to it I'd like to face you in Link dittos. Time to screw that horribad WiFail connection and duke it out in person. >:D

I wouldn't consider most Utah people's secondaries legit enough to count as representation/character experience.
Ah, see, that's where we differ. I think secondaries should count. They are our back-ups in case a bad matchup happens. Then again, some of use have a lot of secondaries (I have like 5, Rade has....everyone.)

Oh, and found out my dad is NOT leaving town this week, so no smashfest at my place. I don't want to bother him while he is home. But like I said, I'm free most of this week, so I'm up for gamin it up somewhere.

Oh, and if anyone cares, the concert was f***in AMAZING! My dad and I had fun. They put on a badass live show.

1st wario/ROB
2nd wario/ness
3rd ness mostly i have been ganon falcon G&W and a little bit if Dedede somewhere in here
4th ness and zamus
5th ness mario and pikachu
6th Tlink and everyone else mentioed cept ROB
7th Yoshi and random
8th Fox, and a little bit of tlink shiek and lucario

and now im really enjoying PT and Peach

and no joke, not all of our secondaries suck

and i blame me not going random on some matches for me not doing as well in singles XD

I'm leaning more towards Joke's opinion.

While it may be true that some people's secondaries stand a better chance in some matchups than their main, I still don't think our secondaries are near where it would be giving us good matchup experience for when we go up against someone good who actually mains them, if you get what I mean.

I'll admit there are a couple exceptions though, and that a couple people have really put a ton of effort and research into their secondaries.

But instead of taking my post as saying everyone in Utah sucks (which I'm not) take it as a challenge to get better. If you're happy with where your main is then work on your secondary and get him up to that level. That's what I did with wario, I played pretty much only him for 2-3 weeks until I was happy with where he was.

We should have a smashfest somewhere! :D

This is why, since I got the game, I had enough confidence to move Diddy and Bowser into equal level with Snake as my main, and to why, even with Ike and Wolf as my secondaries, I still find myself switching them to main status from time to time.

But yeah, a ton of us are as good with our secondaries as we are with our mains. But I think on a competitive level, we all use our mains, with a slight mixture of our secondaries. But maybe with more smashers around, we can have a more diverse set of characters. Or we could just do better with more characters? Maybe I should work on Toon Link then...

We should have a smashfest somewhere! :D
Really sorry about the whole mix-up. I seriously thought my dad was going out of town. He told me at the concert he wasn't.

I'm all up for one though. Someone hold a gamefest!

EDIT: Watchmen comes out on DVD tomorrow. I'm gonna get it. I'll bring it if people want to watch it.

...
Kenny should hold another smashfest this week!
xD

EDIT: I'm trying to drop my secondaries, actually (not that I won't use the characters for fun). But when I shove my main into the arena with Kenny and promptly three-stock myself, and then pull out Gay (Toon Link, in your lingo) and win, there's a problem. (Its called my main, but I prefer not to think about that).
I need to get good enough with Link that I don't have to rely on TLink to save my butt every time. -_-

I've got to admit, that's some folly on your part.
Link is as much a character as MK or Diddy. They all have their limitations--Link has more. But he is only a character. The player matters more than the character. My friends are improving with their mid to high tier characters, while I haven't played more than twice in the past month--I'm still kicking their trash, simply because I'm a smarter player than them.

Even if you aren't convinced, then look at it this way--I'm learning one of the hardest characters in the game. It forces me to heavily lean on and learn all the basics of the game, and all the general or generic strategies of the game in order to play at a similar level to other players-- meaning that if I ever decided to switch to a better character, I'll have a one-up over you guys. Consider the no-nanner diddys; they're still almost as good, if not as good, as any nanner diddy player. Not because they've found some secret strategy with Diddy entirely apart from nanners; they just play Diddy like any generic character, focusing on spacing, zoning, and mindgames. Nanner Diddys tend to focus too much on what their nanners can do, than what Diddy is capable of even without them.

while what you say anonano is very very true, you do realize that while there is so much room for a person to grow as a player, characters on the other hand only have so much potential, so while you may grow faster and more quickly and maybe even some things that others may not, playing as a character such as link or................................................................fox requires that you as a player can compensate for what your character lacks, and there can be a point where the defecit created by your character may require an unnatural amount of talent from the player, so if there reaches a point where link can grow no further, but you can then all you will have gained is an excellent link, but skills as a player that might be better served elsewhere

YES I KNOW I JUST JUSTIFIED HIGHER TIERS SHOOT ME I HATE MYSELF ENOUGH RIGHT NOW

You're right to a certain extent Ano, but your logic fails. Since I could easily show on of my high school friends how to CG with DDD and I'm sure, without a doubt, that they could beat your link. Was it because they are smarter at smash than you? No. It was because your character is simply trash and has such sever limitations that it doesn't matter how good YOU are. I do agree with you on players having a large affect on how well you do, but there is some matchups that don't require any skill/smarts of brawl. (i.e. DDD VS DK)

Oh and your "I'm learning the hardest character of the game" type of logic fails as well. Every PLAYER no matter who you main, is required to learn the ins and outs of smash and believe it or not, you learn more about smash by playing a high tier character.

As for the "No nanner Diddy" part, almost every GOOD Diddy main can play without naners, but why would we limit ourselves not to?

My logic doesn't fail. Firstly, I'm saying its easier to learn the ins and outs of smash with a low-tier character than a high-tier character. When it comes to full-on ins and outs, I have to agree with you; the high tier characters have more room for that sort of stuff overall. They are more competent; that's why they are called high tiers.

While "don't get grabbed" is kind of bad logic, it makes its point. Some matchups are unavoidably bad, such as D3 vs DK, or Sheik vs Ganon. But these are exceptions, not the rule. Let me tell you, its going to take some skill on the other player's part if they're going to force me into a position where I'm going to get grabbed. It's not like I'm going to mindlessly spam on the ground until he grabs me. He has to know the matchup, know how to get me into that chain grab, or he's hopelessly lost. I've played several D3s on the AiB ladder who thought I was an easy win because I was using Link; several of them found out the hard way that Link is still a viable character as I two- or three-stocked them. I still have the replay of one particularly lost soul who lost to my Link as D3, and he later told me that he chose D3 because D3 was an easy character--learning the ins and outs of Smash was, in his opinion, secondary to such things as CGs.

Players are more important than the characters. I believe you are right Rade, at least in part. Skill certainly will have to compensate for a character's deficiencies; however, I believe that skill (which comes through practice) is really an overriding factor to a character's weaknesses. As Tyrant told Deva at a tourney, "You use such a bad character, but I feel I have no advantage against you regardless."
Deva is the best Link; but that's simply because so many Link users don't have the opportunity to use him enough. 2/3 of the Link boards at AiB are WiFi only; which is the only reason they might not be as good as him. Link's greatest weaknesses are that he is easily comboed and gimped. These are conversely a blessing; any half-decent Link main from the boards knows the general ins and outs of Smash. They HAVE to. High tiers need to as well, but they tend to focus on putting the opponent into positions where easier techniques, such as CGs, can take effect. Low tiers have to rely on their guts at all times; high tiers only need enough to lead them into their CGs and stuff.

THAT is my point regarding why low-tiers are better for learning the ins and outs than high tiers. Not necessarily that they are better than them; but because it is necessary to do well at all.

Playing any game at a level higher than beginner forces you to learn the subtleties of the game. It doesn't actually have anything to do with your main's tier.

Low tiers also have a crutch called mathup inexperience. Low tier mains can beat players that are clearly better than them because of matchup inexperience (sometimes none whatsoever) against their main.

Please don't think of yourself as a superior player who would beat everybody if only you liked a top tier just because you main a bottom tier character. It does not work that way.

As FTS put it. You have to learn the in and out of smash with whoever you main. It deals with the player, not the character. *Just like I said before*

Anyways don't get me wrong Ano, but I know what I'm talking about. I'm going to stop arguing though because its not my thing.

Oh and I challenge you to a MM with my jiggz vs your link. lolz.

I wanna mm your Link. With D3. 50$ :D Or with my snake, or with my mk, or with marth. :D

But seriously, the only thing low tiers have going for them is match up inexperience. They are trash characters that limit you as the player.

Btw, I have one month til I get to UT.

I hope I'm not giving a bad impression, but from your responses it seems that I am. xD Oh well. I'll stop debatingtoo.

And DRyu, by challenging me to the dittos you are attempting to prove a point to me still ;) And you're a fine debater. :)

And I'll look forward to the dittos Marsulas... if we manage to get a smashfest going somewhere. xD

Don't worry about it. Utah is giving me a bad impression. I am still sad about leaving home and everyone I know back in NM, and coming to a forced religion university. But, family is family. Gotta do what they need. I am just hoping you guys are chill :D
