A dog in Tennessee has reportedly been rescued, after being left at a kennel by his owner who thought he was gay. He had been scheduled to be put down today.

The dog, whose name is unknown, was scheduled to be put to death today at an animal control centre in Jackson, Tennessee.

Posting on the Facebook page set up in order to find someone to adopt the dog, Stephnanie Fryns, said she had spoken to the kennel, that she had arranged to adopt the dog, and that she would go to pick it up when it opened.

The owner thought he was gay, because the dog was seen “hunched over” another male dog, and so he thought he was showing signs of being gay.

Historically such behaviour was seen as a sign of dominance, and wouldn’t be indicative of a dog’s sexual orientation.

More recent research from MichaelBaugh.com shows research which suggests that such behaviour is “merely a nonspecific sign of arousal”, and that dogs will hump other dogs, or inanimate objects for “play” reasons, or because of nervousness or excitement, and that it is not necessarily a sign of sexual urge.

Those critical of the decision by the owner leading up to these events, have said that, even if the behaviour did indicate that the dog was gay, it wasn’t a reason to warrant turning him in to an overcrowded kennel.

A statement on the Facebook post giving details of the dog read that the shelter “open at 9am and he will die by 1pm if not adopted as he was an owner surrender. Adoption fee is 38.00 and that only includes a voucher for a rabies shot. He looks to be a pit/american bulldog mix.”

The post, by a Facebook account named, Jackson TN Euthanasia, notes that the dog was at Jackson Rabies Control, 146 Miller Ave, in Jackson, Tennessee.

Other users posted that other kennels had offered to take the dog, and some encouraged those considering adopting the dog to take on one of the other dogs at the shelter which could be put down.
Whoever the original owner was shows just how stupid people can be; I mean, seriously too stupid to insult.

Wow on so many levels.

Also noteworthy is that the euthanasia clinic has a Facebook page. Like us on Facebook!

Wow, gay dogs can get rabies shots? What's next, gay dog marriage?

An idiot redneck wanting to have his dog put down because he ignorantly believes it to be gay doesn't surprise me, what does surprise me however is that a professional organisation, there supposedly to look after the welfare of animals, were willing to facilitate his request.

Possibly the dumbest article I've seen in a while. I'm more concerned about gay bigots blaming all their problems on society compared to animal sleeping around with whatever it wants. An animal cannot think logically like a person.

Nothing wrong with gay people, but I don't think you can really apply "gay" to an animal.

Well, despite the provocative wording in the article's title, it looks like the owner just left it at the pound. And, well, they weren't going to kill the dog to oblige the homophobic owner's wishes. That's just what overcrowded kennels do. If no one can take them, they kill em. It's sad, and I don't necessarily agree with it. But considering the alternative of letting the animal starve to death or worse, it is in most cases for the best. Unless, like this lucky fella, someone has the heart to take him into a loving home.

Adopt from shelters, guys.

I'm still pissed that most people can only care for certain species of animals but not the rest. Eating them for no good reason or unwillingness to change or just plain, selfish, laziness. It's not that killing any and all animals is wrong, It's just that this is unnecessary killing. Become vegetarian today. or I will rip out your throat and send my cat to hump your skull. I understand we must kill some animals in order to progress, but casual sandwich toppings are not a good enough reason. If an animal can feel pain or emotions then we should do everything in our power to keep the suffering of animals to a minimum, as long as it doesn't have any major negative effects on our people.

I think it's stupid that people decide to get an animal and get lazy, throwing them into the street or letting them die because they weren't prepared to make this choice. All pets should be spayed or neutered to prevent the crowding of shelters. I still don't know which surgery is for male or female and that's not because I'm a kid. Also releasing exotic pets in the wild is bad too. What a great post I made!

While I understand your viewpoint, and respect that it does have merits, I really don't want to see this devolve into a thread where we argue endlessly our conflicting ideologies. And yes, spaying (for the female) and neutering (for the male) is imperative to the comfort and well-being of your animal. This is why organizations like Paws for Cause and the ASPCA (every animal lovers favorite domestic terrorists!) offer cheap or sometimes free fixing.
However, there are extenuating circumstances sometime. Before he made it big, Sylvester Stallone allegedly sold his dog because he could no longer afford to feed it. This is an extreme case, but similar things happen. Things change. And when once you were equipped and prepared to care for an animal, one day you may find you can no longer do that.
Don't mind me, just playing Devil's Advocate.

I understand that this is the case sometimes, but that doesn't excuse those other jerks who treat them poorly or give up on them when they are clearly capable of taking care of the animal.
