Difference between 64 and other smash games:
No side B moves
No air dodges, side dodges, or wavedashing (makes z cancelling and shield dropping easier)
No wall teching or wall jumping
No powershielding or light shield
Lag cancels 100% of landing lag with z button
No up throw or down throw
Throws are strong and can be used to KO
No mashing out of throws (except DK cargo hold)
Small ledge magnet
Only smash DI
Ledge DI and reverse ledge DI (DIing into the stage to counter knockback)
Hitboxes are huge and many are disjointed (see here for hitbox data: http://framedisplay.onlinessb.com/webfd/framedisplay.html)
Pivoting is important (see techniques videos for further detail)
Large hitstun and shieldstun
Shielding and rolling are generally not good in this game

General data on characters (friendly for newer players):

:luigi64: Luigi :luigi64:
Description:
Luigi is a floaty, hard to master character with an above average recovery and a defensive playstyle. Luigi is generally regarded as being a low tier character due to his lack of viable approaches and slow air speed, but can be a force if a player masters his powerful moves (mainly up b). Luigi struggles with matchups against most of the cast, but has a great matchup against Jigglypuff.

Techniques:
Rising Tornado - rapidly tap b to gain more height in the air, useful for recovery
Down smash for edge guarding
Opponent shields fireball -> Grab
Dash -> Up Smash/ random up smashes when opponent is above
Using nairs to fill in openings in the air (comes out very fast)

Advanced Techniques:
Using fireballs while recovering
U air chain -> rising down B
Instant Jump -> u air (looks like a backflip when performed)

Bread and Butter:
Short Hop Down air -> U air
U air -> Up-B
D air -> Up B

:mario64: Mario :mario64:
Description:
Mario is arguably the most balanced character in the game. Mario has a great recovery, a good projectile, and a balanced moveset making him generally appear in the middle of tier lists. Mario does well against lower tier characters and can gimp some higher tier characters easily (Falcon, Fox) but due to trading/tieing moves can struggle against Pikachus and Kirbys. With up air chains, recovery mix ups, using fireballs in a smart manner, and gimping characters, Mario can be a hard to beat character.

Techniques:
Rising Tornado - rapidly tap b to gain more height in the air, useful for recovery
Down smash for edge guarding
Shielded fireball -> Grab
Up-smash can be a good tool to stuff SH approaches since it has invincibility, a large hitbox, and stays out longer than you'd think

Advanced Techniques:
Jab grab (http://www.ssbwiki.com/Jab_grab)
Using fireballs while recovering
Instant Jump -> u air (looks like a backflip when performed)
SH U-air as a spacing tool
Down B offstage (Mario Tornado spike)

Bread and Butter:
Short hop Down air -> U air
U air chain -> Upsmash or F air

:dk64: DK :dk64:
Description:
DK is a large, slow, but powerful character that has some unique abilities. DK is considered to be mid to lower tier. DK has probably the most infamous moveset in the game due to how the animations look, how some moves are regarded as useless, and his large reaching and fast grab. DK is easily combo'd and doesn't have a projectile making him struggle against all of the higher tiers. With this being said, DK can have success competitively and does do some damage against lower tier characters.

Techniques:
Up b to escape combos/separate DK from opponent
Down Smash/ Down B to cover rolling or platforms
F air and D air spikes
Up tilt/Down B -> Jumping Giant Punch
U air -> Giant Punch

Advanced Techniques:
Neutral B canceled with Z in the air to shift facing directions and charge move (can cancel lag of canceling Giant punch by pressing shield button)
Forward throw -> F air
F throw -> Giant Punch
Down B spot dodge (1 frame invincibility)
Perfect platform canceled aerials (mostly on DL)
Using set knockback of up b offstage to gimp characters
Infinite cargo hold (forward throw until opponent mashes out used repeatedly aka chain grab) - usually banned, mash out through mashing alternating left right on control stick and A and B buttons repeatedly and fast https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MgPDFsiQODM&t=0m13s

:link64: Link :link64:
Description:
Link is a slow, heavy character that relies on his projectiles to zone and create openings on his opponents. Due to Link's terrible recovery, poor grab, and susceptibility to being combo'd, and unforgiving ledge mechanics, Link is considered low tier has very few even or favorable matchups. With ledge cancels, spacing with projectiles, and z canceling, Link can control approaches and be a tough opponent.

Techniques:
F smash edge guard
Z canceled d airs and u airs (high priority)
Throwing many bombs and boomerangs

Advanced Techniques:
Platform edge canceled aerials and up b
Boomerang combos
Descending up b

:samus64: Samus :samus64:
Description:
Samus is arguably the most difficult character to pick up and play with success. Samus has many tools at her disposal, but suffers from being floaty with slow air speed and a lack of consistent combos putting her on the low end of the tier list. Samus is harder to combo and can sweetspot the edge more easily than other characters. Using her spike, projectiles, and up b to escape bad situations and rack up damage, Samus can put up a very decent fight.

Techniques:
Fully charged shot
Down b for area control
D air spikes
F smash (finisher)

Advanced Techniques:
Fully charged shot on shielded opponent -> Grab
Increased horizontal recovery using down b (takes away second jump when used)
Grabbing characters that overshoot and miss sweetspot of edge
Teleport upsmash (enter dash then quickly press control sitck in opposite direction then up smash shortly after that)
Ledge canceled up b

Bread and Butter:
D air -> tech chase combos
D air -> N air or B air (finisher depending on what direction she faces)

:falcon64: Falcon :falcon64:
Description:
Captain Falcon is probably the most iconic, most popular, and definitely fastest character in the game (who doesn't know Show Me Your Moves or the Falcon Punch). Falcons great speed and aerials make him a high tier character with many favorable matchups. With this, falcon suffers from being easily combo'd and has a average to below average recovery. Through practice, Falcon makes a very tough foe for any character.

Techniques:
Down tilt edge guards
D air spikes
F throws

Advanced Techniques:
Dash grabs
Jump -> Falcon Punch -> Up b (helps with horizontal recovery)
F throw/U air -> Falcon Punch
Pivot -> edgehog

Videos:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FosN-vNSlYI
:ness64: Ness :ness64:
Description:
Ness is a technical, simple character that is good if you know how to use him. Ness is notorious for his bad recovery, limited approach options, slow vertical air speed, and matchup trouble against top tier characters, making him generally considered mid to low tier. Ness depends on double jump canceling (hitting jump twice in a fast manner followed by an aerial aka DJCing) for combos and approaches. His DJC d airs, DJC u airs, and strong throw are great options for his character and can make him into a comboing machine.

Techniques:
D air spike
Throw for KO
U air chains
D air -> throw

Advanced Techniques:
DJC aerials, combos, and tech chases
Shieldbreaks
Down b sweet spot of edge
Up b edge sweetspot

Bread and Butter:
Dair -> U air (finisher)

Videos:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HhwTpgME9Lw
:yoshi64: Yoshi :yoshi64:
Description:
Yoshi is very fun, balanced, and the most of all unique character of the cast. Along with Ness, Yoshi is able to double jump cancel meaning he can perform aerials in a fast manner immediately after using his second jump (aka DJC). Yoshi's super armour on his second jump is able to absorb enemy attacks allowing him the ability to counter hit opponents. This ability makes his recovery vulnerable to being broken from high knockback making him helpless offstage. With this, Yoshi's second jump is very large, fast, and hard to predict. Yoshi is also able to parry single hit attacks within the first 3 frames of his shield, appearing to absorb the attack without shieldstun or damage. Yoshi can be combo'd easily making some of his matchups difficult, but with mastery of his unique attributes these disadvantages can be overcome.

Techniques:
F air spike
Up B edgeguard
Down B (finisher)

Advanced Techniques:
Down B edge cancel
Neutral b of opponent off of edge (if opponent can't mash out)
Up B edge cancel (egg cancel)

:kirby64: Kirby :kirby64:
Description:
Kirby is generally accepted as the second best character in the game behind Pikachu. Kirby is one of the most popular characters in the game to to his ease to pick up and play, but high skill ceiling. Kirby has a great recovery, some of the fastest moves in the game (uptilt one of the best), great combo and gimping ability, and excellent matchups (only negative one with Pikachu). Kirby's few shortfalls include his weak grab and weakness to be smashed off the top of stages. Kirby is a offensive force both experienced and new players can enjoy.

Techniques:
Up tilt
F smash (finisher)
Down tilt - edge guard for opponent trying to sweetspot edge
B air and N air edgeguard

Advanced Techniques:
Pivot Up tilt
Rock cancelling - pivot next to edge causing Kirby to immediately turn into a rock and drop

Double up b spike (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OCCK8tg9ZxU&t=44m55s)
Platform cancelled aerials

Bread and Butter:
Up tilt x 4 -> F smash shield break

:fox64: Fox :fox64:
Description:
Fox is the most technical character smash 64. Fox is know for his great combo ability and not so great recovery. Fox's disadvantages include him lacking many options when his opponent in at low percentages and he can be combo'd easily. Fox can make up for these weaknesses by racking up damage with one of the best projectiles in the game, his laser. Due to his high potential and some shortfalls, Fox is considered a high tier character, with many advantageous matchups. Learning Fox can be a frustrating experience because the potential to be heavily punished for a minor technical mistake, but if master Fox can be unstoppable.

:pikachu64: Pikachu :pikachu64:
Description:
Pikachu is generally accepted as the best in the cast in terms of moveset and potential. Pikachu has a fantastic recovery, great aerial move priority, large gimping potential, and a powerful and far reaching grab. Pikachu is considered to have no disadvantaged matchups and is consistently great performer in competitive settings. Pikachu may seem easy to use and acheive victories at first, but delving into the character can make a Pikachu main a very formidable foe.

Bread and Butter:
Up smash -> down b (thunder) (finisher)
B throw -> KO

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8hrsy_abSnM
:jigglypuff64: Jigglypuff :jigglypuff64:
Description:
Jigglypuff looks like a joke character at first, but has one if not the most powerful move in the game with her rest (down b) that can make an experienced player using her no joke. Jigglypuff has a large shield, but when broken immediately is KO'd off the top of levels. Jigglypuff is a relatively simple character to use, relying on d air, up tilts, and rests for KO's making her great for online play. Jigglypuff has very inconsistent matchups with the characters in terms of facing high tier and low tier characters, generally faring better against higher tiers than some of the lower tiers. Jigglypuff is the glass cannon of the 64 cast, able to deal out loads of damage but not being able to take much damage before being KO'd.

Techniques:
N air
F smash
Down Smash (edgeguard)

Advanced Techniques:
Neutral b (Pound) recovery - goves more horizontal movement, stops momentum
Teleport, teleport -> rest
B air chain https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nWqN-YZxIjk&t=13m21s

Bread and Butter:

Very cool but you will have trouble with DK since his character thread is absolute garbage.

But i'll quote:
DK's down b has 1 frame of invisibility and can be used as a ''spotter dodger''

You're right up tilt has a tone of ending lag, but comes out fast and has a hitbox that covers a large area. I edited the OP and replaced up tilt with f smash

In the name of being positive and avoiding certain controversy, I have rid the OP of the "worst moves" section. Keep the suggestions coming ;)

Advanced tech gfycats? It might help new players to see it performed and it could give them incentive to play that specific char.

Kirby techniques: Bair and Nair edgeguard

Jiggly bread and butter: Dair Uptilt Rest combo

Not a really advanced technique but include the DK chaingrab and how to ESCAPE the dk chaingrab in the DK section.

I suggest including the Falcon punch recovery - I'm not sure if you would consider it an advanced technique, but I think it is important. I have also found a lot of people who are newer don't utilize it / or realize you can use FP that way.

Uptilt -> Donkey Punch
works on some percents for DK

So does Dair -> UpSMASH

Uair -> Giant Punch
is a lot more reliable. I only use up-tilt on rare tech chase situations.

I would add uair to falcon punch to Falcon's section. Add Link's edge cancelled bomb pulls (boomerang too? i'm not sure).
Samus needs fully charged shot on shield -> grab and whatever other shield pressure moves that she can use to get a grab.

also add that you can cancel the lag of canceling donkey punch by pressing your shield button

and that DK's down B can be used as a spot dodge bcuz 1 frame of invincibility swag

All characters currently completed in terms of areas filled out.

I will start to add more videos and gifs for further clarification and guidance.

As always, suggestions are welcome.

Ooh, and I think you should include that when ledgeguarding pika can just sit its lazy ass on the edge and fsmash
If they don't get the ledge DI they either lose a stock or get knocked very far away, at which point you can just wait for them to approach the ledge and fsmash again
Oh and if they get the ledge DI you can just fsmash again
Combos into taunt

I'm not sure we should be telling new players that Falcon's Fsmash is a good edgeguarding tool. That's a really bad habit and there's almost always a better option. But good work here, this looks like a helpful thread for newer players

What combo with taunt, what?

Someone make a combo with Luigi's taunt.

I would replace this sentence under Mario:

"Random up smashes when opponent is above - this move stays out longer than you think, has a large hitbox and can easily catch people"

with this:

"Up-smash can be a good tool to stuff SH approaches since it has invincibility, a large hitbox, and stays out longer than you'd think"

I also think that SH U-air is a much better spacing tool than N-air.

I meant nairs were good for a quick aerial to come out if you are just about to hit the ground instead of not using a move or using a move with higher startup. In any case, I deleted that sentence because it was confusing and made the change to the U smash comment.
