On December 20th, the official Pokkén Tournament website announced that Tokaigi 2017, a gaming event located at the Makuhari Messe convention center in Chiba is to take place on February 12th, 2017. Only the first 22 teams to preregister online and the subsequent 10 teams to sign up on the first day of the event will be allowed to take part in the tournament. Other games hosted at the event include non-fighting game titles such as Mushiking and Splatoon. The tournament will be streamed by Niconico, and the stream schedule can be found here.
Meanwhile, it has been confirmed that on December 21st that Pokkén Tournament will be featured at the Japanese tournament event KVO, a major tournament in Osaka. The tournament will be held on May 4-6, 2017 and will be one of nine major games hosted at the event alongside Super Smash Bros. Melee, Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, Guilty Gear Xrd -REVELATOR-, and several others. Unlike Tokaigi, KVO will be a singles event.
Top Gengar player Sasahune is confirmed as the tournament organizer for KVO 2017. During the weekend before this announcement, he, Hiet and many other strong Japanese competitors had a strong showing at the Northeast Championships 2017. The two of them tied for 9th place, and players Potetin and Apollo ultimately took Grand Finals in a frenetic, dynamic display of top level gameplay.
2017 is already shaping up to be an excellent year for the Japanese Pokkén scene. With their strong performance overseas at NEC recently, the tournament scene in Japan is remarkable. Its players are sure to attend events such as these to keep growing and evolving their gameplay. Make sure to support their scene by keeping a close eye on their events, just as their players have done for ours!
