There's quite a few picks I'd specifically like to have seen specifically in the era from which they were considered, if only because it'd be really cool to see how their design would differ from their modern interpretations (where applicable.) The best examples in my mind are probably Snake and Sonic back in Melee, because they'd probably be based on more contemporary representation from that era - coinciding with games like Metal Gear Solid 2 and Sonic Adventure 2 - and it'd be neat to compare how they'd function.

On a similar note, I've kind of wanted to see Clefairy in 64 ever since I heard about her being cut in the first place. As much as it probably wouldn't be as exciting from a newcomer nowadays, I reckon her Metronome move would be a really fun and chaotic thing to play around with in the earlier titles.

Ayumi 'cause beating monsters up as a schoolgirl sounds based.

Mach Rider 'cause why not. Post apocalyptic bike riding guy (girl)? = cool

Chorus Kids, if only for the novelty and to see how they would have worked.

Takamaru, Geno, Dixie Kong, Krystal - don't have much to say there, just gimme them all, they coo.

EDIT: Bubbles too. Dunno **** bout her but cutesy characters like that are my crack

Even with putting recency bias aside Clefairy would honestly be my #1 pick. Clefable's one of my go-tos in Pokémon (magic guard is op lol), I think the Clefairy manga is hilarious, and I love Clefairy in general. It's probably my second favorite evolution line behind the Togekiss family. Like, even without being a cut character I'd go insane if Clefairy ever got in lol. Pink space fairy from the moon is awesome.

As for some others, I think Krystal, Plusle + Minun (if you also believe they're "PraMai"), Slime, Heihachi, and Mach Rider would all be pretty cool. Dixie too, I'd just be slightly afraid of her being a Diddy echo with a glide, otherwise she's amazing.

Primid - I like henchmen. Primids were neat.
Duon - Either the boss fight comes back or they gets the Ridley treatment. I think it'd be a neat gimmick. Like Terry they get separate B forwards by direction, however, the character does not auto turn around (or even turn around without using specific moves, he always attacks both sides).
Magnus - Yeah people will complain about too many Kid Icarus characters, but he's not even an assist anymore and he practically had a full moveset as an assist before.

And of course all the "Cancelled Playable characters".

Chorus Kids are my most wanted character to this day so... them. It still stings how close we were. Excitebiker is worth a mention too.

If these more ambitious concepts weren't feasible at the time, I'd like if Sakurai would revisit them now that the technology has caught up and that his creativity and ambition toward Smash movesets has transcended these bounds. Because the next console will probably be strong enough to handle the Chorus Kids this time (assuming the 3DS impacted this decision) and I'm sure he can come up with a moveset for a dude on a bike at this stage in his career.

I said Dixie before and now she has been mentioned and given her proper respect, I want to say Rex and Takamaru. Rex could be given his move set from XBC3 DLC. That doesn't require a team up with Pyra and Mythra plus he's the more beloved and badass version of the character.

Takamaru is another solid choice that frankly I wish should've been included over the Ice Climbers back in Melee.

Was Lyn confirmed to be considered ? I think Sakurai wanted to include a Fire Emblem newcomer in Brawl but didn't know who to add, so Intelligent Systems suggested he picked Ike, the latest protagonist that time that eventually grew the most popular anyway. But I think Lyn must've been at least considered given the fact she was the sole FE AT character.

Balloon Fighter and Takamaru would be great retro characters.
Krystal would be cool, too.
And Ayumi Tachibana would be a interesting surprise, none of the less.

I keep forgetting Krystal. It was a huge debate back in the day whom should be favored as a newcomer in Brawl, Krystal or Wolf. Well we know Wolf eventually made it, so that was that. Krystal also didn't appear anymore after Star Fox Command (good game by the way) so that doesn't really help much either. I do wish we could see her one day but without a new type of appearance in Star Fox, even if just with a remake of Assault, I think it's unlikely.

I'd love Krystal being in the game too, with all her attires. Her Starfox Adventures clothes as main attire and her Dinosaur Plnet dress and Starfox Assault suit as alt attire.
Also I'd like Zelda and Sheik turning back together and the freed slot being taken by Toon Zelda with Tetra as transformation.
