Super Smash Bros (N64)
hqdefault (1).jpg

Console: N64

Series: Super Smash Bros (Does this count? It does technically have stages (Battlefield, Final Destination) and characters (Mii Fighters) associated with it. If you want me to change it, I'll gladly.

Duration: 5 minutes

Starts at: Stage 1 of Classic mode (Normal Difficulty, 5 lives) as Mario, facing off against Link

Why: The game that started it all. I think it'd be cool to give players a taste of the og Smash. Heck, apparently Smash 64 was meant to be a Masterpiece in Smash for Wii U before being scrapped, so I think it'd be cool to resurrect the idea.

VB Wario Land
Series Wario
Duration 6 Mins
Starts at Stage 1
Why: Guve some love to a game that was on an otherwise weak console, plus adding a few deep cuts would be very appealing to the retro crowd in my opnion

Job 118: Banjo-Kazooie

Game: Banjo-Kazooie
Franchise: Banjo-Kazooie
Duration: 7 minutes (7:00)
Starts: Mumbo Mountain

Banjo-Kazooie would help rep the N64 Masterpiece content which is particularly important considering just how big B-K was for the system, and how Banjo is a testament to his N64 playstyle. While I intended for it to be Spiral Mountain, I felt it was more fun to include Mumbo Mountain instead.

Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War (SNES)

Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War is the fourth mainline title in the Fire Emblem franchise. Originally released only in Japan on May 14, 1996, it is the first entry in the series' Jugdral saga. It has been rereleased on Virtual Consoles and Nintendo Switch Online several times and is renowned for its difficulty compared to modern entries in the series. Other titles in the Fire Emblem series have been included in Smash Bros. as Masterpieces, such as Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem and Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light, giving precedent for the series' inclusion as a masterpiece. Additionally, Fire Emblem is pushed quite heavily by Nintendo and having older games be playable may give new players a chance to experience what made the series so popular. The masterpiece would start on the first map and last around 7 minutes.

  3. Purple - Numerous RH character color schemes
  4. Grey - Karate Joe
  5. Orange - Monkey
  6. Pink - Sea Mammals and Baxter
  7. Dark Blue - Ninja Dog
We still need the following colors for green, blue, red, and black

Job #118:
Pac-Land

Series: Pac-Man
Duration: 3 minutes
Starts: Beginning of the first level. (Should we use the Famicom version, then with the second controller)

"What is that weird MS Paint stage from?" "Why does Pac-Man use a fire hydrant?" Here's your answer! Additionally, Pac-Land is a major part of gaming history as it inspired Super Mario Bros. The game uses its Japanese version as the US version was reskined with Hanna Barbera Pac-Man characters.

Fatal Fury Special (Neo Geo - 1993)

Fatal Fury Special is the updated version of 1992's Fatal Fury 2. It updates the game by upping the speed a bit, adding several new mechanics and expanding the roster. It is the game that represents the Fatal Fury series the best, as it has most iconic characters, the mechanic to hop between lanes which the series was known for in its earlier games and killer combos.

So how would we incorporate this into a masterpiece? I'm glad you asked, I first thought of calling it a day by just letting the player go through Arcade Mode with Terry with limited time. But no, the person would just be missing out on the best part of the game in that case; the Boss Battles! So I opted for another route. The player would just start out by facing against Geese, the mid-Boss, automatically! SNK Boss Syndrome right out of the bat, baby. Not to mention, the battles will be in high difficulty. It will seem that the CPU will have an answer for everything you do, but fret not, for success comes with practice.

geese-ffspecial-stance.gif

After defeating Geese, you'll end up facing the last Boss of the game, Wolfgang Krauser at his ambient opera! With SNK Boss Syndrome still kicking in, your torture hasn't stopped yet. But don't worry, as he's the last Boss, you'll attain your well-deserved ending once you beat the mighty Krauser. But for the ones that are still up to the challenge, there's an optional secret challenger you can face by fulfilling a certain requirement. You see, in the original Fatal Fury Special, if the player wins every match in two rounds, then the player will be challenged by a certain opponent at the end. And well, seeing that you'll only be facing against the last two enemies of Arcade Mode in this case, more than half of the work has already been done for you (as a special gift). If you're able to defeat both Geese and Krauser in only 2 rounds, then this mysterious opponent will come to challenge you.

krauser-fatalfury2stance.gif

Indeed, this "Fighting Master" is the one and only Ryo Sakazaki from Art of Fighting! In Fatal Fury Special he served as a secret boss and character. As aforementioned, you'll be able to face him by defeating both Krauser and Geese in 2 rounds. Not an easy opponent by any means, he has come to challenge Terry as Ryo holds the original title of "King of Fighters". Fun fact; this is the first time a crossover in a Fighting Game has ever happened, for this marks the first time that the Fatal Fury Series has crossed over with Art of Fighting. This Dream Match is also the battle that inspired SNK to pursue making even more crossover games, such as the King of Fighters series.

ryo-ffstyle.gif

The masterpiece will basically follow through the last 2 (or 3, depending on requirements) battles of arcade mode! Here is a video that I timestamped so it's easier for you to visualize! Also important to note that the person in the vid is playing on a modified easier difficulty.

so, tl;dr

Console: Neo Geo
Series: Fatal Fury
Duration: 8 minutes. Enough time to face off and defeat Ryo.
Starts at: The Beginning of Geese's Boss Battle
Why: Fatal Fury Special is easily the most iconic entry of the Fatal Fury series, well, besides Mark of the Wolves at least. It has a very good fighting system, is very enjoyable, and it's the most "Fatal Fury" of all the Fatal Fury games, for a lack of a better term. It's the game that also inspired the entire King of Fighters franchise by making Ryo a secret boss in the game and crossing over both series. This also marks the first ever crossover in Fighting Game history!

Job #118: Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars

Super Mario RPG is from the Super Mario series but is a crossover between Nintendo and Square Enix.

System: SNES

Duration: 6 minutes. This will provide just enough time to beat Bowser and complete the opening.

The game will start at the very beginning in Bowser's Keep skipping past the opening cutscene to maximize the amount of gameplay time you have. The player will have enough time to rush to Bowser and defeat him saving Princess Peach. Following this, Exor will strike down from the heavens above and shatter Star Road commencing the title screen. It will be about now that the time should run out.

SNES_01.gif
SMRPGTitleScreenJ.png

Mario RPG was one of Nintendo's most notable crossovers with another company, that being Square Enix, and the game became an instant classic with a notable character being highly requested as early as Smash's first official poll for Melee. It also ended up being the precursor for Paper Mario and several staff would move on to form AlphaDream and develop the Mario & Luigi series.

Shouldn't we wait and see if Geno gets added?

Lets use the SNES version instead because than was one of the Consoles listed
We will be including more later on but for now, we are limiting Masterpieces from the following generations:
NES
GB
SNES
GBC

N64
Note: Put in the N64 because it was also a console to be on the list of Masterpieces (Also games from non-Nintendo system games are eligible but only if they can coincide with the N64 or later Gen timeframes).

New Masterpiece!

Revelations Persona
(PlayStation - 1999)

This is where the Persona series began before branching to the mainstream and outshine the rest of the Megami Tensei series and its spin-off, while it is mostly forgotten by the general public and even Atlus themselves I choose this one simply because to honor the legacy. While there are popular choices like Persona 3 which probably the real start of the series it has a high chance that Atlus probably would port the game into Steam like they did with Persona 4 Golden and to stick by the rules P3 came out years after the N64 lifespan ended.

While there already is a remake on the PSP called "Shin Megami Tensei Persona" the ones that is featured in Masterpiece is the original PlayStation version with a new translation and other minor things like keeping the original japanese names of the character and setting.

Starting point
  1. As you wake up you are greeted by your friends along with some others that is also knocked unconscious at the same time, you then meet up with your friend from earlier and plan to visit their classmate who is at the hospital named Maki to which you have to navigate your way to the hospital and which display the full scope of the city of Mikage-cho and inside you also have to find her room in classic SMT fashion in a first person perspective (which I sure hope won't make the player feel dizzy), and there you will be thrown into your first battle.

After this the rest is just normal with a few cuts here and there to justify the timeframe until you reach a certain point in the game.

Let’s table SMRPG for now. This also applies to the Boshi alternate costume for Yoshi. If Geno gets in, we can look to see if we will include the SMRPG masterpiece along with the Boshi Alt. Doesn’t make much sense to include both of those but not have Geno present.

Lets use the SNES version instead because than was one of the Consoles listed
Games from other systems are eligible but only if they coincide with the generations listed.

Job #118 Redux: DRAGON QUEST III: The Seeds of Salvation

classic-dragon-quest-i-ii-and-iii-games-coming-to-switch-on-september-27-527435-2.jpg

Dragon Quest III is the third game in the Dragon Quest series, the first mainstream JRPG that inspired several other franchises to come such as Final Fantasy, Tales, Megami Tensei and Pokemon.

System: NES

Duration: 7 minutes, an ample amount of time for the player to explore the overworld and encounter several iconic enemies.

The game will begin with a preset team as the Hero is leaving the town of Aliahan on their quest to rid the world of the evil Baramos. The preset team is to speed up the process and once again maximize playtime. There won't be much exposition for the player so with a lack of story and dialogue, the demo will focus on showcasing the classic battle system. If the player wipes out, they will restart at the beginning from the overworld near Aliahan.

I chose this game because of Erdrick's inclusion as one of Hero's alts in Smash and the game itself is very prolific and historic leading to some of my favourite games of all time to be created. Hopefully, maybe a certain gooey little blue brother can be voted in some day too.

Party mode vote!

1. Territorial Conquest
Civilization is one of my favorite video games, would enjoy seeing a spin of it in Smash. If this does win I would like to suggest some depth in order to prevent it from being just a war game, maybe adding some other victory conditions a la Civ 6?

2. Item Lottery
Items are fun! Chaos is fun!

3. Zombie Smash
I like the idea though I think it would only work in giant stages like Great Cave Offensive.

Yeah Territorial Conquest is focused on stategy and not just battles so it can be very complex for layer flashing out

Why was the original DK Rap removed from DK's music list? We keep on adding and removing this song even though it's completely distinct from the Melee version - same with the GaMetal remix of Bowser Castle GBA getting removed a while back in favour of the Mario & Sonic remix.

If it's because of "one hell of a guy", that was fine for Rodin's trophy in Wii U so it should be fine here as a song lyric.

We will be stopping submissions in just a little bit for both the Costumes as well as Masterpieces. If you wish to submit either, please do so as soon as possible. We will close it very shortly.

Starting from this week, I may be unavailable to work on this thread as much as I intended. In short, I’ll be pulling 10 hour shifts at work and possibly working another remote job in the mornings.

I will be working with the leadership to better streamline it and to continue powering the thread forward. We keep the voting limited to here on the thread usually but I wanted to see how people felt about migrating it to Google Forms. Basically, depending on the submissions, people will be able to vote for one submission and there will be “three questions” on the poll.

This will be...

What’s your first choice?

vote for 1

What’s your second choice?

Vote for 1

What’s your third choice?

Vote for 1

We will then incorporate the ranked voting once we get the number of votes for each one. Obviously people can’t vote for the same item for each and we will be able to see it if that happens. We will also be able to see if people vote more than once so we will be putting up blocks to ensure that doesn’t happen. However, I do have a few questions to ask the thread via a Google forms to gauge interest and compliance with what is requested of them. One of them is submitting your email before voting to ensure all members vote only once. This email would be visible to myself, Krook, Mr Robotto, airconditioner, and Ramen Tengoku. We won’t be using emails for anything other than that.

DK Rap was removed for those reasons; especially considering the censored version song is already in the library. The “one hell of a guy” is a different compared to Rodin’s trophy description.

As for the GaMetal, that’s news to me. I removed several songs several months ago as they were either inappropriate, duplicates, remixes of songs that are currently there, or, in some cases, not iconic or relevant enough to warrant inclusion. This was specifically the case for the Other section and for songs that really don’t have any business being in Smash. Was this your submission? I can add one more track to allow for its inclusion.

I will be removing the DK Rap though

I would be OK with Bowser Castle being added.

Here is the link.

I don't think having multiple remixes of one song should be an issue at all as long as they're all transformative and not just the same midi under a soundfont.

Additionally, shouldn't "one hell of a guy" be more acceptable than "Hell's gate" as one is an exclamation and the other is a direct reference to purgatory, even in the form of a bar's name?

Masterpeiec: Pokemon Red & Blue (Pokemon)

this will be brief as I’m in the middle of traveling, but you will start outside the elite four with a team consisting of the kanto Pokémon in smash, except for Mewtwo. You will have long enough to beat the champion if you know what you’re doing, so lets say 7 minutes. Pokemon is the only series present with a fighter in smash 64 to not have a masterpeice, which is a pretty glaring omissions considering the success if the series sales wise.

Voting for a New Multiplayer Mode has closed.

Territorial Conquest will be added as our new multiplayer mode! Smash will take a different turn now with grand strategy in the mix - exciting! Here's hoping for good yields to everyone looking to begin their reign of benevolence/tyranny! Thank you to everyone who has submitted for this round.
