I felt like people don't know enough about decay with Sheik so I'm going write a muti part guide in understanding it. I had originally plan to finish it before posting it on smashboards but since you all decided to stop posting I changed my mind decided to put up first part. Hopefully I'll have the 2nd part done by pound.

Decay is a very complex things, most likely the most complex thing that has been in Smash to date but don’t let that put you off as in order to master any character properly knowledge of at least the basic fundamentals of how decay works is critical. Now then let us begin…

GO!
The match just started you and your opponents are now squaring off to fight, it is at this time absolutely nothing is decayed but then it happens you manage to hit them. It doesn’t matter if it was a smash, an aerial, one of your “B” moves; tilts, throws, grab pummels, or even ledge attacks all of them get decayed the same. In figure 1.1 shown below represented the amount of moves the game remembers for each character. As you can see it is currently empty, the only way it can get filled is if you hit your opponent or a solid object (more about this later) with an attack.

When an attack hits it is added to the game memory but the game can’t remember every move that hits in an entire match so it just remembers the last 9 moves for each character. Any move that is not listed in that memory is consider “Fresh” and is at full power

In figure 1.2 you see the first attack added to the game memory. Now that “Dsmash” is added to the list if used again it will do less knock back and less damage as well.

In figure 1.3 it shows that as new moves are added to the list older moves are pushed down the list. This is actually a good thing as with the addition of “Jab” into this list “Dsmash” actually becomes less decayed and thus will be closer to its original “fresh” knockback and damage.

Figures 1.4 is to demonstrate what it might look like when the list is filled, watch what happens in figure 1.5 to the “Dsmash”

Notice how with the addition of the “Chain” to the list that “Dsmash” is no longer there? Well that’s because the game has forgotten it was ever used and now consider it “Fresh” so it has return to its original knock back and damage.

How to apply this knowledge to Sheik
Although small knowing this much can is a very helpful especially those Sheiks who like to use the DACUS a lot. Just by keeping a rough idea how many moves you had landed before trying to use the usmash to kill will allow you to have the best of both worlds as using it to damage and kill. Also when the usmash fails to kill either because you used it too early or you got the double hit instead of tipper you will know how long till you can try again.

Part 2
Now that we have the basics of how Decay works down we can talk about some of the little things so you may have a better understanding of it.

Solid Objects

“Solid Objects” although not on every stage they are non opponent’s objects you can strike to help decay or help refreshes your attacks.
List of “Solid Objects”
Smashville Balloons
Yoshi’s island Ghost
Castle siege Statues
Luigi’s Manson Pillars
Brinstar goo holding the left and right platform to the main platform

It is worth noting that De3 and Olimar minions can also be used to refresh decay or decay it.

Restoring moves to their “fresh” knockback and damage
There are three ways to refresh the knockback and damage of your attacks with Sheik

 1. Hit your opponent or a solid object with 9 attacks that you don’t care if they get decay
 2. Die, when you die all of your attacks are refreshed and you start anew.
 3. Transformation, by switching to Zelda all of your attacks get refreshed and when switching to Sheik they get refreshed as well.

Although knockback does always decrease with decay damage on the other hand does not as can be seen in figure 1.6 below for the Ftilt.

Multiple hit attacks such as a fully changed needle storm, rapid jabs, and hitting with the chain more than once all only go onto the memory list once. It is also worth noting that the first and second hit of the jabs also counts only once but the third hit also count once not matter how many rapid jabs you do.
