The "Year of Luigi" combo video collaboration thread

I suppose this is the official collaboration thread for the stuff regarding the planned Year of Luigi Melee combo video project. I'll ask that people try to keep discussion at least semi-relevant if that's not a big request.

WHAT WE NEED:
  • Volunteers for editing and etc. I've got very little experience with iMovie but if no one else steps up, I'll do whatever I can with that.
  • Clips, clips, clips. If you submit clips, it will make the project at least a little smoother if you'll submit both the name of the player (and the color of the Luigi in case of Dittoes clips) the timestamp of the part of the video you want to include in the video; that is, put the beginning and end of the part you want in the vid. My vote is to include the entire community in the video, so let's try and get a range of good clips.ALSO I would appreciate a small description of the clip along with it so I know what I'm looking for and it's easier for whoever ends up in charge of this to organize. TRY TO SUBMIT ONLY 2013 CLIPS, or at least mostly 2013. When players' clips from 2013 are sparse, slightly older clips are ok to submit, but every clip that goes into the video is up to the designers.
  • Ideas for editing, both clip-related and flavor-y (things to spice up the combo vid).
  • Music ideas - any suggestions are good. I'd like vote to include some Weegee-related music like Super Mario tunes, but also some other good jams that would be popular with a general smash community audience.
  • Discussion about whatever else is relevant; anyone with experience making combo videos, I'm imploring you for your help in whatever way you find you can contribute (Vudujin and Abate... I'm looking at your videos from this year)

I think it would be fun to include some of the audio (or clips) from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2j2GSD9VtPU, and tie it into the combo videos. As an example, when he says "What luigi is known for is his powerful jumping", we can show a batch of clips that feature cool platform movement/aerial combos, the "it;s harder for him to stop after dashing" leads into impressive wavedash tech chases, etc.

Fantastic, Papapaint, I appreciate you volunteering.

Some clips from that game would be cool. If we could take that audio clip of "Luigi is known for his powerful jump" and directly afterward do an Up-B montage or a crazy recovery montage, that would be cool. There are a few other clips in there that would be good, and if we can have any other audio/video clips of Iwata or any other Nintendo employees/associates talking about Luigi that would be cool ("Instead of Mario... Luigi is featured as the main hero of the adventure," or "of course, it's also harder for him to stop after dashing," followed by some clips of impressive use of wavedashing or Vududashing, or "It's part of Luigi's characteristics" followed by just some random crazy shenanigans). And if there's any way to incorporate a clip or two of Luigi from the Super Mario Bros cartoon like in Abate's Special Scoopa Sauce, we should seriously consider that.

For an intro, here was my idea: the video begins by scanning over parts of various high-tier characters standing around dramatically but without showing any of their heads. Like over Falcon's arm, Marth's sword, Fox and Falco's legs, etc, for a few seconds, with some dramatic text. Then afterward it zooms out suddenly and reveals several photoshopped Weegee heads (http://t6ak.roblox.com/55ccaa7feb738cd2ea96d3ce28a8c2a7 like this one). Then some kind of quick title sequence and we get into the meat of the action. Could be a funny way to do an intro. Might even be funnier of the title of the video is not particularly descriptive and the viewer has no idea what's going on.

If we have a lot of random misfire clips, we could incorporate some of them into a small music synchronized sequence to display multiple players' misfire clips simultaneously; I'm thinking for this bit we show just the misfires, but synchronize them to each other, and display them in a quick "1, 2, 4, 8, etc" sequence. It's hard for me to describe what I'm talking about, unfortunately.

If anyone else has ideas for stuff to add, let's hear them.

Rocketpowerchill - yeah my idea was that over every clip, in the corner somewhere, we could put the name of the player, possibly with customized text but that's a bell-and-whistle sort of thing to decide later.

Oh also - if the PM combo video doesn't get a lot of support on the PM board, then what do people think about possibly combining the two in this one? Or could those of us who play PM make one ourselves? It just seems like there hasn't been any response on the Luigi board's social thread.

Very cool thread idea! I'll be sending stuff indefinitely. Is there a due date, or does it just have to be done before 2014?

I got some nice sound recording equipment recently, and if I get enough time I could make a cool Mario style tune.

Custom tunes would be an absolutely great idea. The idea is to have it done before December, and at worst before the new year yeah, unless someone has a good objection. You've made combo videos before so you know better than me how long a time frame we're probably looking at. I'm thinking we could get this done within about 4 months though if we have multiple people collaborating on editing.

I heard you were a bit artsy but didn't know you made music haha

What other ideas do we have for music? I thought something a bit chill or even slightly silly in a combo video could be a nice, unique touch, like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=edIp6Zz8Zwg, but I know it's risky and might not go together well in a combo video.
and The Pretender by Foo Fighters might work for more intense points in the video too if it isn't cliche.

I wouldn't have a problem as long as the combos weren't really staged; friendlies is friendlies I guess. But we'll see what everyone else's take on it is.

You can feel free to submit PM and 64 clips, but I won't guarantee that we'll include 64 and PM in the video. It's up to the community to decide. It wouldn't hurt to keep just a compendium in the OP.

Pokemongeof, those are some nifty, janky, Luigi-y clips hahaha.

Not a combo clip but some stuff that might be a nice addition for Papapaint as flavor/special spicing stuff in his creative design, even if it may not be the crux of his focus yet.

Although again, these are all games released before 2013. I don't think I'd have an issue with these, but I tried to to find audio clips from 2013 stuff too in case anyone did. I'll look more in the future sometime, just because it might be cool to keep a reservoir of soundbites. I predict only 4 or 5 of these going into the video at very most. At some point I'll comb through a few random episodes of the old Mario Bros show to scrounge for lolworthy clips A La Special Scoopa Sauce unless Papapaint or the community requests me not to.

And at any rate this is mostly flavor stuff, we need more clips sent in from the community people!

Probably doesn't have to be strictly combos.

I like the second video you submitted, but as it looks now Papapaint is probably going to have most of the say on what goes into the video. I'd wager on trusting his judgment about your clips, although I think the community should add some input. If that's a bad idea, someone please say so.

I'm realizing that I can't find any 2013 clips for a lot of luigis, like ka master and psi. For these cases only, I'm suggesting that we allow clips from 2012. Again, that would be only if there is a severe scarcity of 2013 clips. Thoughts, agree, disagree, ammendments?

Geof, you'll definitely have some combos in the video. They're perfectly janky.

I'm going to include non-combo luigi related stuff. This video is as much about highlighting the absurdity of Luigi as a character as it is about showing the cool **** he can do in melee.

As of right now, I'm sitting and waiting for EVO before I really start working on the video. I feel like some great stuff is gonna come out of that tournament, so I'd like some of those to be the focal points around which the rest of the video is constructed. We definitely have more than enough clips from 2013 to avoid reaching into other years.

Vudujin, still interested in helping out with some of the music?

Hahaha Papapaint you read my mind, I was going to say my vision is for this to be partly a combo video and partly a general celebration of Weegee throughout ages and games. I'd ideally like to see music synched clips from a variety of things interspersed in the montages. Also, I think it would be nice if we included nods to the other luigi combo videos that came out this year, notably Powered by Yahoo (from vudujin) and Special Scoopa Sauce (by abate), either in music choice (possibly a remixed version of a song that was used?), clip styling (like the distinctive mishmashing in Abate's vid), or what have you.
