Hey there Smashboards. :3

This thread is dedicated to the discussion and advancement of Stage Selection Portraits (SSPs).
SSPs are the previews one sees when picking the stage to play on. It also includes the text of the stage's name, the character icon and the logo of the game the stage is from.

Example: (My SSE Replacements for Hanenbow):

Ive spoken with a few people who have expressed frustration with the level of success (or lack thereof) found in SSP making and thought I would come up with a thread dedicated to dispensing knowledge of the who, what, where, how and most frustratingly the WHYYYYYYYYY of SSP making. :p

For those of you who don't know where to find the stage selection portraits for editing, they are in:

pf/system/common5.pac/+sc_selmap_en/+MiscData[80]/+Textures(NW4R))

Here's what we know so far:

A. It's possible.
B. It doesn't work for some people.
C. It works for some people then fails to work anymore (the game freezes upon further editing of the pac)

I once upon a time managed to get it to work on a clean, unedited common5.pac, which I then put my CSPs into. Its filesize was (and still is) 10.9 mb, much smaller than the original 11.6. This is due to the number of low-indexed CSPs I have in my common5.pac, It wasnt an issue then and isnt an issue now. HOWEVER, when I (and others) try to further edit the SSPs, we get the dreaded freezing of FAILURE.
I have since tried to re-edit a fresh common5.pac with the same portraits, to no avail.

If anyone at all could shed some insight unto the matter, it would be greatly appreciated.
Below are the SSP I use (and wish I could use lol)

These would be more useful if we could edit the custom stages added by PW's stage roster expansion code.

Otherwise, there's not much use for this, unfortunately, other than maybe editing a single replaced stage at a time.

I tried replacing my own pics in Brawl Box and when I looked in-game, the pictures didn't change. D:

I would use it exactly for the same purpose. :)

Let me make sure I've got this straight. You just said:

"This would be more useful if we could get it to work with the thing that it doesn't work for. Until you can use this for the thing it isn't made to work with, it's useless."

I just want to make sure I understood you properly...

Uh, the way I meant it was that you rarely have a reason to replace the stage pictures, unless you're using the code that replaces a single stage with the online training stage and you want to make a picture for the replacement stage. The best use of replacing pictures would be editing each of the stages from the expanded stage roster, but as far as I know that's not possible (yet) since they all use the icons from FD and BF.

So, um, that's sort of what I said, I guess?

Actually, it can be very useful, such as these new stages that are being made with BrawlBox. (e.g. Ridley Destination, all the sse stages, this new Midna stage thing, etc.)

I figured as much.

The way I have my multiple stages set up is that there is a single stage that is chosen with the Start Button, which I have an SSP for (Tabuu's Corruption, Melee Battlefield) and the rest are randomly chosen via A Button.

So there is a single "theme" stage, and the rest are randomly selected. So I suppose SSPs would work best that way, if you have multiple stages. Otherwise, yes, the single stage setup is where you'd find the most use for this.

I'm guessing nobody uses this then, due to the lack of responses/enthusiasm?

I'd definetly use it, even if it was just to replace rumble falls's SSP with a question mark (for my sse stages)

I would use this too, and the lack of responses/enthusiasm could be due to the fact that this is a discussion thread instead of a guide. I know how to do it, but there are many people who don't who would be happy if you made this into a guide.

I made a compilation of these.
http://www.mediafire.com/?z3djwkfjjzw

You probably don't have all of them, but I do have some popular stage textures. Includes a picture for nearly every stage and a high tier, low tier, custom stage change icon. Names, logos, and icons not included (for now).
