Last year, I held a thread where we voted for the video game character of the year for 2023 (it ended up being Ganondorf). Since I considered it a success I’m bringing it back this year.

To earn a spot of video game character of the year, a character needs to have a major appearance (not necessarily a debut) in a video game of 2024, or December 2023. You can submit up to three characters who you think were the most interesting or notable characters this year and deserve the title.

Characters also need to have at least human level intelligence to be considered. You can write a sentence or two justifying why you nominated each character but keep in mind that we’ll have time to discuss each nominee later. That’s about it so have fun!

Astro Bot
He's a robot which is a big plus.

Cloud Strife

Sun Wukong
Astro Bot would technically be against my rule about characters not portrayed with human level intelligence but on second thought I think I’ll relax it anyways so Astro Bot would be fine. I had that rule at first because I wanted to do another thread for animal of the year but I’m not interested in doing that anymore.

I’ll submit:

Radahn

Kiryu

(I remember someone submitting him last year and I thought it would be better this year with Infinite Wealth’s release… so here he is!

your mother's sleeping quarters
The Blob

Animal Well and Bigmode are kinda huge for the gaming industry, I think Blob deserves some recognition.

Kril

Another Crab's Treasure is something I have never looked into much, but if Shadow Of Erdtree is gonna sweep the awards I at least want some diversity as far as Soulslike games go.

Yeah non-video game originating characters would be fine as long as they had a game appearance.
Okay, then I'll submit Patrick Star, because of The Patrick Star Game.

And also Connie from Mario & Luigi Brothership

There! Three characters (Goku was already mentioned)

Heihachi Mishima

And we thought some measily lava finished him off. (HM Reina, new popular series character but feel like Heihachis return was a bigger deal)

Rascal

Not sure it counts as only the demo is out but demo has been continuing to get updates & there is a lot of promise & a community already behind this Sonic-like platformer.

Arzette

Thought this was a fun throwback.

Also HM to Palworld but wasnt sure a Pal would count nor did i want the pressure of picking one.

Did you think Astro Bot ran off animal level instinct or something? He's clearly intelligent enough to fly spaceships and wear costumes and dance and stuff

I mean being able to talk/communicate like a human mostly but in hindsight it’s kind of an arbitrary distinction to make. I just said I’m not doing that rule anymore though so it doesn’t really matter though.

Connie (Mario & Luigi: Brothership)
Daisuke (Mouthwashing)
EVE (Stellar Blade)
Goku (Dragon Ball Sparking: Zero)
Heihachi Mishima (Tekken 8)

Shadow the Hedgehog (Sonic x Shadow Generations)
Squirrel With a Gun (Squirrel With a Gun)
Sun Wukong (Black Myth: Wukong)
Zelda (The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom)

Now is the discussion phase, basically we’ll talk about each of the picks and our opinions on if they’d be a good choice or not and (if you want) who you’re planning on voting for. If you want to make a case for any characters you chose that’s alright too. You do not have to talk about every single character since there’s a lot.

Also keep in mind that the games I listed after each character is just arguably their most recognizable role this year. You can take other things into account too if they appeared there. For example, even though I listed Aloy’s game as Lego Horizon she also appeared in the Horizon Zero Dawn remaster so you can take that into account when considering her. I’ll post my own thoughts in a bit.

My thoughts:
  • I haven’t seen the game talked about very much after its release but the characters of Arzette are probably the most memorable part of it so I think Arzette’s a solid idea
  • Since Animal Well doesn’t have a story at all and is very deliberately gameplay-first I can’t really see a character from it being character of the year
  • I haven’t played FF7 Rebirth but from the story section that was covered I feel Aerith might be a better choice than Cloud
  • I probably would vote for Goku if it was Dragon Ball Kakarot that released this year or something but in Sparking Zero I’m not sure he’s that much of a stand out in the massive roster
  • The fact Heihachi being alive is so controversial honestly elevates him to me
  • Lennox… certainly is an honest look at video games this year. I think he’s pretty good at exemplifying Concord’s failure since there’s so many cool design choices you could do with a lizard man and they just made it a Star Lord rip off.
  • I probably would vote for Peach if the Mario RPG had released this year but I’m not sure Princess Peach Showtime made the biggest splash.
  • I forgot it was literally the year of Shadow lol I don’t want him to win just because of that and I do want other characters to have a genuine chance but yeah he’s got a good chance
The characters I’m leaning towards voting right now are Shadow, Jimbo and Kiryu.

Bored so did a writeup on my opinion of every nominee outside my own.

Aloy (Lego Horizon Adventures)
Makes sense, series expanded quite a bit this year with Forbidden West hitting pc & the series hitting Switch feels like a big deal.
The Arisen (Dragon’s Dogma II)
Also makes sense, was a big release that i felt like snuck up on a lot of people (feel like many forgot or didnt know about the 1st game). Have heard mixed things about the game though.
Astro Bot (Astro Bot)
Probably a favorite, series really blew up & reached new heights & can probably even make an argument of him being sonys Mario or Master Chief at this point.
Blob (Animal Well)
Not too familiar with game outside it being Dunkys publishing companys debut. Seems like it all went well though.
Car (Garn47)
Honestly hadnt heard of this one.
Aerith/Cloud Strife (Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth)
Havent played this one yet so cant really speak on who the better pick may be based on the new game. 2 beloved, classic characters from a big new release makes them favorites imo as well.
Connie (Mario & Luigi: Brothership)
Not into Mario RPGs. Know the series returning is a big deal giving former dev shutdown but not really sure how big this one is outside the core Nintendo community although this is a Smash forums.
Daisuke (Mouthwashing)
Seems like a decent choice although feel like ive seen more of Curly & Anya around.
EVE (Stellar Blade)
Looking forward to playing this one since i really like Nier. Wish the discourse was a bit different about this one though since the controversies are the main thing everyone is probably familiar with.
Goku (Dragon Ball Sparking: Zero)
Sparkling Zero seems like fun & cool seeing another series or sub-series revived. Do wonder if their was a more interesting pick who stood out particularly in the game with its massive roster but i dont know enough about the game & Dragon Ball to say.
Hulkenberg (Metaphor Re:Fantazio)
I tend to prefer supporting characters to protags in RPGs so cool to see her get nominee over Will? Unfortunately dont see myself getting into this one anytime soon as i feel like i should probably start with Persona when i finally try to get more into Atlus games.
Jane Doe (Zenless Zone Zero)
Not too familiar with game, surprising nominee as i dont think shes the protag & the character i remember seeing most around the game was the shark girl Ellen.
Jimbo (Balatro)
Tried game & its just not my thing but not a surprising nominee.
Kiryu (Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth)
A personal favorite of mine, will admit the direction they took his story got me to spoil myself on some developments in this game (still pretty far from playing as im just finishing up Yakuza 4 now)
Kril (Another Crab’s Treasure)
This was a game i thought got snubbed at the Game Awards since i saw alot of good things about it. Cool to see it at least end up here.
Lennox (Concord)
Not surprised to see game here for fun but am a little surprised at who got the nominee as felt like Star Child, Daw, & a few other characters stood out more for better or worse.
Patrick Star (The Patrick Star Game)
Kind of forgot this game came out with its quick announce & release. Hopefully it was decent so sure why not.
Princess Peach (Princess Peach: Showtime)
New spinoff & 1st in nearly 2 decades. Seemed like a fun game & hopefully a solid nominee.
Radahn (Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree)
A nominee makes sense with this being abother big release. Not familiar with game but a fun boss seems like a good choice.
The Salesman (Thank Goodness You’re Here)
Also have not heard of this one.
Satan (Antonblast)
Not a surprising nominee, know some people here really like the game. Thats the extent of my knowledge of this nominee.
Sargon (Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown)
A bright spot in a dark year for Ubisoft with a tragic end. Not really interested in title but is a solid choice.
Shadow the Hedgehog (Sonic x Shadow Generations)
Probably another favorite with a big push around character in general with other things like the movie keeping the hype for fans up.
Squirrel With a Gun (Squirrel With a Gun)
Hadnt heard of this one before nominee although did pop up in my recommended on Steam shortly after & am mildly curious about this one.
Sun Wukong (Black Myth: Wukong)
Not much to say since i already said similar with other goty nominees. Big release, makes perfect sense & may be a favorite overall.
Zelda (The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom)
Surprised this one isnt talked about more. Top down Zelda isnt my thing but game seemed good & introduced a long awaited mainline playable Zelda & interesting mechanics. Isnt this the 1st non-remake top down Zelda in awhile too.
James Sunderland (Silent Hill 2 Remake)
Nice to see another Konami IP get some love given the rough recent history of their ip outside of collections. Not familiar with series but protag or Maria? are probably good choices.

Zelda, Patrick Star, Peach, Astro Bot, James, Shadow and EVE are all characters that I know so they come first for voting.
