A feature thought to be long forgotten after the original switch to XenForo, these lovely user-creatable mini-forums have returned with proper support and a few new rules. Due to a number of the previous groups being mangled from the XenForo switch, and most of them being empty or their data being lost, Social Groups are starting over fresh.

All social groups by default are viewable to the public, but only members of the group are able to post and like replies in the threads there. Creators of Social Groups can change this to allow non-members to contribute if they choose as well as toggle if users can openly join, require approval on join, or be invite only. Private social groups are not currently a possibility to due undesired side effects of their existence, and the lack of transparency and sense of community associated with them.

Overall, this will make social groups easier to moderate, and a more inviting area for all members of Smashboards to become a part of and enjoy.

Creating Social Groups has also received some minor tweaks, to prevent over-saturation and again, increase the ease of moderation for them. Normal users are unable to create Social Groups, unless they have more than 100 posts, in which case, they are able to create a total of 1. Premium users have this limit increased to 3.

Joining Social Groups is currently limited to a maximum of 10 for regular users, 20 for 100+ post users, and 30 for Premium. This isn't really something we're actively aiming to restrict, and will likely be changed to unlimited if users are regularly hitting those limits.
