Late 07 is such a weird time to get into the scene.

I'm probably more new than old school, but I wouldn't say it's by a lot.

Edit: Lucas trying his best to start something in every thread today lol.

it's good to care about beating people on the rankings that are higher than you, but the same kind of priorities can be set without the negative things that go along with worrying about rankings... not everyone is Knan.

it's good to care about beating people on the rankings that are higher than you i suppose, but the same kind of priorities can be set without the negative things that go along with worrying about rankings... not everyone is Knan.
Part in bold needs to be a troll.

Whether you agree with the system/panel/etc or not, the rankings can only reflect what people have done. If you do well, then, no matter the system, the rankings will show that you improved. It's a concrete way to observe your achievements and it helps people set goals.

I honestly don't know what's wrong with that.

no it isn't. i was also going to say that not everyone is cam702 cause tbh, i can't really concern myself with rankings to have the best mentality. i start to get worried about staying on them, which can **** me up, which is ****ing stupid. they distract me from testing my own ability because i'm worried about something ******** like lost respect.

what i basically meant was, not everyone arranges their thoughts in accordance with the system as well as you Kevin... me being an example of that. when i stop caring about that **** i play way better.

lol and i wonder how well these rankings show people's improvement? they don't. duh. they can, assuming you display your improvement, but it's all about performance, and way more factors go into that. so improvement isn't the best word.

in fact, IMO, the best thing the rankings can do is spark your motivation to prove how wrong they are LMAO.

my point is: that's you Kevin. that's how you view it and rankings help people like you. but that doesn't mean it's the same for everyone. lol i apologize if you can't understand that.

and i'm not arguing for the rankings to be nonexistent. i think at the end of the day they are entertaining. i'm just the kind of person that shouldn't concern himself with them.

Well yeah it helped me to be good, but I only looked at it that way BECAUSE I wanted it. Other people want to be good, but they can be misguided when they view all of this negative nonsense here. Everyone is so caught up in petty thoughts like loss of respect(which is easier to obtain from others when you actually just stay motivated and make the rankings) that they enjoy making posts all day like "I suck(which is entirely ********. if you suck, then you're probably getting better or have some extenuating circumstances like money or parents holding you back)." "PRs are dumb(insert reasoning that involves some menial thing you don't agree with)" "I'm not you, Kevin(please tell me why in the world being me makes someone that isn't me able to change their own ridiculous mindset and start improving. If we actually want to play that game, then just look at the stuff I say as trying to make you like me. It's pretty funny because most of you have better circumstances to improve than I did[I would have killed for a tournament every weekend within easy driving distance] and yet you want to take it for granted by sitting around and telling me that I shouldn't be trying to motivate you. How can someone be against rankings that much? Are you guys all really so fragile that you'd rather insult me countless times than put yourself out there JUST A LITTLE BIT to say that you're trying to improve and make the rankings/move up.

As much as I hate to say it, DJ is probably the best person in this state about actually meaning the stuff he says about getting better. He posts several times saying that he's going to **** people and move up. IF WE ALL HAD THAT ATTITUDE, then we could get some decent rivalries and competition going here, but no, we'd rather spam our big tournament threads[yeah, the one that gives us even MORE chances to improve by potentially bringing in top OOS players] with 40 pages of "LOL GREEN GREENS GUYS" instead of hyping, MM requests, and trash talk. You all have so much in front of you(you can even search up multiple character styles on youtube and steal from them instead of creating your own way of playing now!!!) and yet you choose to say you have no chance of getting better or giving some other insane john that would have been the laughingstock of anywhere in 07 and back.

HOW DOES PLACING BETTER IN TOURNAMENTS OR BEATING BETTER PEOPLE NOT REFLECT IMPROVEMENT???

Cam, that makes ZERO sense. If you suck in tournament and win in friendlies, then you suck. I'm tired of sugar coating it. People could sandbag you(intentionally or not) in friendlies and if you get nervous in tournament, which is the ONLY time matches matter, then you need to fix it or place badly. Johns, no matter how much you guys want to spam them, are NOT acceptable. If you get nervous, if you were sick, if you lost your momentum, if you stopped liking Melee halfway through the tournament, if you switched characters, if you played your best friend, if you had a crowd against you, WHO CARES? You lost. The number beside your name on the PRs and results is the ONLY thing that people should use to judge you. If you think otherwise then maybe you'll fit in great in North Carolina, land of the bros, but you'll get ***** and have no respect then in California, tri-state, Florida, MD/VA, etc.

If you don't care about power rankings because I just hurt your feelings or for whatever reason, then don't post about it. I actually left the panel because I stupidly thought these had brought a better competitive mentality into the community. I want more competitive posts in here(if not in tournament threads as well) and I'm willing to write these long posts you probably hate me for reading every time someone tries to discourage it.

"Proving how wrong the rankings are?" Right. You think I'm saying the rankings are flawless? I hope not. I'm terribly sorry we don't get perfect data so that you guys will have to work hard for new reasons to hate this list, but that doesn't mean that it is worthless at all. This list was worked hard on by a panel of smashers who understand how important this list is(except for Karn, but he's good at following the system), so they do their BEST to make the PRs as accurate as possible. Hating on the PRs is hating on the panel too, but they have always put up with that nonsense. Like I've said since the beginning of these PRs, if you don't like the list, then go out and fix it! And by "fix it" I don't mean whine and complain about it.

" I apologize if you can't understand that." I can't understand why people go to tournaments and enter if they end up caring more about friendlies(in your case it seems) than tournament matches. Should we make the PRs accommodate for people who are "nervous" and bump their place up/give them wins they didn't deserve? You can justify your placings to yourself all you want, and I'm fine with that, but you guys go so far as to criticize the result of your own problems, and that is something that should never have been tolerated. I apologize if you can't understand what PRs are MADE TO DO, but I'm trying to get people to understand the point of these so they can actually be useful.

And yeah, let's talk about entertainment while I'm here pissed off. I love trolls, loved em since I joined this site and all of the newer people took advantage of my trust in people because they think it's hilarious. There's really nothing like feeding someone lies and ruining their day/week/month because of dumb arguments and fights that come of it. You know, before all of that nonsense, NC was a really fun state. We joked around a lot, but some of us still improved. Tournaments were loose and I always had a great time. Now we have petty feelings towards at least one other person in the state and tournaments seem to have at least one incident of serious misconduct, whether it's pissed off johns or bothering another smasher at some other point in some unwanted way. The "land of the bros" fights more than we love now. I can't really remember the last time we had a lighthearted spam moment. Threads are always full of trolls and negative feelings.

So, guess what ended up happening guys? We post much less frequently now. Our tournaments will get even less hype than they already did(see HERB 3 threads), we'll fight a lot(surprise after only unoriginal "shut up boi" trolls are left), and then talk crap about the boards. Now, you're already probably not reading this because "oh pp, how can I like the boards? Everyone is so dumb and won't listen to me! I don't know how anyone can stand it there." That's what I get a lot of. And then we turn around and say we're all bros here and invite people to this state......
You know, it's a group mentality thing. I bet, if we all tried to get into the PRs, tried to get into competition, tried to learn our character inside and out instead of watching videos/matches in person and giving up, then I bet we would actually enjoy this site and each other, AND ESPECIALLY MELEE, a lot more. Isn't that why we go to tournaments(primarily)? We want to prove ourselves and get respect. We want to further our character or make money. If you want even one of those things, then you need to hop on board with smashboards etiquette and tournament/PR mindset change. That is, unless you enjoy our state being known as the "pp and lozr state." I don't know about you, but it's a pretty humiliating thing to go anywhere/talk to anyone oos and have them say that I/lozr are the only people worth seeing here. It's whatever though, if you have gotten serious now and want to improve more at this point, then things won't stay that way. I'm a resource if you need it.

That reminds me, the HLS group. Why is it taking so long for some of the respected character mains to respond? HLS is a great resource that helps you learn about every character in the game, and apparently that is too good to have around as well. If you want to get better, then you need to be more active in there.

That reminds me next, what's up with DJ and Theo? You two are probably the worst about shamelessly laying out your hatred for the boards and anything else you didn't get your way. I don't know why the two of you think your logic/ideas are so superior to anyone's but until you both prove otherwise, you just look like people who pick fights for the sake of it.

And while I'm here, I'll just clear this up. I don't hate DJ Rome. I think he has the most backwards logic of any person in this state(which is definitely saying something). I think he is a terrible arguer because he attacks people too much and doesn't consider their ideas. I think he has an ego and a bias that are among the biggest in NC. Despite that, I don't hate the guy. He has his funny moments(see: action B joke on the return trip from pound 4), and I think he wants the state to get better as well. He hosts a lot of tournaments(XD) and has really shown his motivation and willingness to improve. I respect him for that. DJ, this isn't intended to make you hate me or like me. It is my honest opinion and if you don't like it then say so or quote me on it like you have been because that seems to be what gets you up in the morning these days.

Alright, now that I have said what I think is most(but not all, believe me =p) of the stuff that has been on my mind for about a year(for some things), I'd like to switch gears. We actually have tons of opportunity in front of us, NC. We have tournaments every weekend! That isn't something many places have, and the tournaments all have over 10 people! We are very fortunate to have dedicated TOs and players who are willing to come out to stuff time and time again. We have a stable PR system which is a good way to keep you motivated for those tournaments every week. We have a wide range of character play here, so we even get valuable matchup experience. East NC even has lots of people closer together, so that means smash time in between tournaments! There's also a great skill ceiling here. You have me and LoZR at the top, constantly reminding you guys that there are people who are waiting to see you when you become straight ****. 2010 looks like an amazing year for Melee, and we have new people entering the fold/improving as I type! There's so much potential in this state guys, but I can't unlock it myself. I need all of you to understand why I think what I do about stuff and realize that I honestly do want this state to become ****. I have ever since I started to become good/win tournaments here. My first reason for doing the PRs was to "give back to NC for helping me become good." Also, we're all great people(not kidding), so I wouldn't mind seeing things a little easier on the trolling, but I could deal with that if it kept you guys around.

I hope you guys receive this(by the end =p) in the right frame of mind, and I hope it gets at least a small part of the change that I think would help us. Catfish for life. Let's stack it up!

Interesting PRs. I might ask a question or two later.

I can tell Foxy was the one who had to come up with at least 3 of the HMs though lol.

I like how I never have the secondaries I use all of the time in tournament put on the PRs. XD

Being on the PR's made me play worse in tournaments actually, so I do agree with Cam about some of that.

Not that it matters now because I'm pretty much done with entering tournaments unless I change my mind.

Dear Kevin Nanney,

this was all i was saying...

when i put myself in a mentality like:

this.

i play a lot better

than when i at times consider rankings and end up thinking like this:

and it becomes easier for me to fall apart.

cause i'm not you

i.e.

in other words, in order for me to be benefited from my mindset the way you are when you are caring about rankings, i have to do the opposite thing you do, and NOT care about them.

so PP, "not everyone is you" is a ****ing valid argument. IT'S GOD**** ****ING TRUE YOU NARROW MAN.

and anything else of what you said that i have found to be COMPLETELY WRONG, EXAGGERATED and/or CLOSEMINDED, whether it's directed to me or not, i will talk to you on AIM about cause i hate this indirect **** and i don't want to sit here and write a **** novel for reason.

Liang now i see what you were saying...
