Nothing is further from the truth! Ridley is shown to have a long history with Samus herself. Him being the one who led the space pirates on the invasion of her home, destroying it, and her parents, in the process. He has always appeared as a boss in most of the Metroid games. (All but two, Metroid II and Metroid Prime: Echoes) He is also very popular. In Sakura's poll, from what he allowed us to see, Ridley was mentioned four times; The same amount as Diddy Kong and Ike, both of which are confirmed playable. These polls were japan-only, a place where Metroid is not very popular, yet Ridley is still very well-known there, and he is wanted.

You forgot to exclude Prime: Hunters.

Hello fellow Ridley believers. I can't bring myself to even consider the option that Ridley won't be playable! Sakurai HAS to add another Metroid character, and there aren't any other allies of Samus, and the only other feasable villain would be Dark Samus, which would be a complete clone. The other hunters aren't important to the series, and M.B./Kraid are too big and don't move. Metroid is easily Nintendo's third largest franchise, so it deserves more reps, especially if the Kirby franchise gets 3 characters (if we get Dedede).

In other words, Ridley for Brawl.

To be honest I had no idea who Ridley was until.... sometimes after Melee when I saw him in the opening and looked it up. And I didn't know who Samus was in Smash Bros.... yep. i've never played a Metroid Game....

I just don't know how well he'd work though, as he looks like a character that flies around a lot..

Notice how Andross is a main boss, but he's not a Subspace boss like Petey Piranha. It seems like if they were going to use main bosses as Subspace bosses, than Andross would have been a boss.

That makes me think that they're only using minor bosses for bosses. So Ridley won't be a boss.

Though keep in mind, while most people will agree that Ridley is the most important boss that you fight throughout the series, he's yet to actually be THE final boss in any game. Though I've always found his battles to be more difficult than a lot of the final battles anyway...
