shut up who cares

i'm playing with these bands in a few weeks! happy to finally play an all prog show, most of the time we are the odd man out in either hardcore or pop punk shows.

FXZERO

http://fxzero.bandcamp.com/ this band's really cool and fun noodling that is up my alley. guitars are awesome, vocals are ok, overall just weird and fun!!

i recommend the track "Skyholm"

Cryptodira

http://cryptodira.bandcamp.com/

sort of similar, i guess, but to me feels a little darker than FXZERO.

I'm adoring Downfall of Gaia's new album.

Also Lunarsea's new album is just... perfect melodeath. Seriously, Hundred Light Years is very close to a perfect album for that genre.

Amaranthe is a new guilty pleasure.

Amaranthe isn't a bad band, but something about them seems very Backstreet Boys-esque.

Lycus is pretty cool if you like really thick atmospheric metal.

Lycus is ****ing awesome, but I can't find a dl link to save my life ;_;

Also I don't know if you all have heard of these guys but they dropped an LP this year and its really great doom/sludge metal

Level 3 is out. I like it, but i'm not crazy about it.

http://lastchancetoreason.bandcamp.com/

i'm actually super stoked for new Arsonists Get all the Girls. the released songs sound like they're back to their old more grindy roots and screamo-ey vocals. plus plenty of silly midi keyboards and stuff

http://arsonistsgetallthegirls.bandcamp.com/

Not gonna lie, I actually really like Level 3. It's not as musically spastic as Level 2 was, but some of the stuff they did definitely works for me. As for AGATG, yeah, this album is going to be either legendary or a massive flop. I seriously am hoping the former.

Haven't gotten around to Level 3 yet, will get on that soon-ish. As for AGATG, I'm hoping this ends up good. They haven't released anything bad yet. Though I prefer Portals over Hits, and these new songs sound like they could've been from Hits. Either way, kinda excited.

IMO, my first and second listen impression is that this is their greatest album, and is definitely on my top 10 aoty list. I previously liked Hits the best so I'm curious to hear your thoughts. My favorite track is probably the title one, and I loved the song with the Heavy Heavy Low Low vocals

This is definitely in my AOTY as well, and its definitely the most well-written of their albums to date. Such attention to detail on some of these tracks, especially the MK duo and My Newest Vision.

Not even close to being album of the year. It's alright, not my favorite AGATG album by a long shot. Portals > Motherland > Listen=Hits> The Game Of Life. I don't know if I like it more or less than Hits yet, Hits seemed much more chaotic while Listen almost seems mechanical. It does feel like a much more detailed album but I don't know if that always works in its favor. Favorite tracks were Balloon Battle and My Newest Vision.

The Game of Life was their best album. The one with shark thing on the cover was good too, but everything they put out after that was garbage.

I actually disagree, I could never get into Hits From The Bow, and the Game Of Life really only had a couple interesting songs to it. Portals and Listen to the Color are the only albums from AGATG that I can listen to from front to back and enjoy the whole way through (and I'd rather not talk about Motherland atm. XD)

Ive always wondered what other metal fans listen to their music on. Ive found that my likes and dislikes have changed significantly since getting high end speakers and headphones.

I don't think metal tends to require that great of a setup to listen to adequately. Sure, really trashy ones will sound bad (few exceptions... My old in ears had a broken cable, and the only portable alternative I could dig up was some 2$ ear plugs from the super market... well, that only meant I listened to Nattens Madrigal non-stop while traveling from and to university, haha), but generally anything decent will do just fine, since the music isn't that complicated (:

most metal i listen to is pretty complicated/busy. i can't stand techdeath, djent, busier power metal, etc on most consumer-grade headphones. they lack the stereo imaging, speed/attack/decay, and instrument separation to really shine.

Haha, yeah, those would be examples where decent audio-equipment is in line.
"Consumer-grade" hardware is pretty fine though imho. There's really good ones out there, that are super affordable (:

Even some of the simpler styles of metal tend to be sonically rich. I wouldn't exactly call Sleep's music complex, but on cheap headphones it sounds way too thin. When I'm at home I use Sennheiser HD800.

A kid I went to high school with is now in a band that is, imo, super good, but they get no exposure for some reason.

Here is one of their songs http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jLuhELRHM98
kinda ****ty production, the guitar tones are really not that good to me and mostly just sound like a wave of static. vocals are okay, and the digital stutter thing and the synth part is used neatly here...but songwriting wise it's pretty boring. the change at 3:00 is way cooler than the rest of the song. it should be more like that. anyways.

had fun a few weeks at Holly Maddux's farewell show with Akeldama, FERO LUX, Burning Fair Verona and some other bands. our set was kinda ****ty because we had sound/monitor problems the entire time, but i still had a really fun time. and i took a video of a new song and it doesn't sound as bad as it felt at the time!

I like this quite a bit, I agree the production is pretty ****ty, and the break apart vocals where it's like "Uh-uh-uhuhuh-uhh" realllly drive me up a ****ing wall.

But I like the drums a lot and the vocal work / lyrics are pretty cool too. Really neat riffs, remains interesting from beginning to end.

Thumbs up! More than I'd expect from some "My friend who was in highschool..." band. lol

Yeah I agree the production is pretty ****ty, but I'm pretty sure they record in one of the guys basements, so I don't expect that high of quality

Yeah I mean I've been listening to stuff from kids I was friends with in high school for years now, and this is the best band this friend has been in so far

Semi-old news/opinion or whatever, but Born of Osiris's new album is the best thing that they've put out since The New Reign, in my opinion.

wow a bunch of posts and no one is talking about music

the new Protest the Hero tracks ****ing rip especially Drumhead Trial

http://www.metalsucks.net/2013/10/02/protest-hero-face-drumhead-trial/

saw BTBAM, Faceless, Contortionist and Safety Fire a few weeks ago. was really dope. BTBAM was perfect as always (they are playing all of Parallax 2 nonstop on this tour, plus a White Walls encore), Contortionist was ok (they only played Intrinsic songs and all the synth stuff is programmed now that Michael Lessard is the frontman), Faceless was probably the most boring performance I've ever seen (no Evan Brewer and it was mostly all new songs, borrinngggggg) and Safety Fire was really really incredible, they were easily the second best band that night. Fantastic tour that you should really try and see if you can, even if just for BTBAM. they also have a fantastic light/projector screen setup for this tour that is so far beyond the presentation of any BTBAM show I've been to and even if you aren't really a fan of Parallax 2 the sheer stamina and craftsmanship of watching them belt out the entire thing in one go is a thing to behold.

hmm what else...new Gorguts is crazy as ****.

found this band Mephistopheles who just put out a really weird and awesome tech-metalish album http://www.metalunderground.com/news/details.cfm?newsid=94300

also just discovered Xanthocroid and their Blessed He With Boils is one of my new obsessions. very ambitious black metal with extremely solid vocals and lots of atmospheric movie-soundtrack sounding interludes. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FioQxFyfbAQ
