Heh, I don't dislike bmth in particular, I just dislike all metalcore. Dunno why, I usually find stuff I enjoy in pretty much all genres, but metalcore somehow just doesn't sit well with me :D

Have Enthring been mentioned here before? They're fantastic (playing something like viking or melodeath metal :D), yet for some reason rather unknown. Well, pretty much everyone I showed them to liked them (even some of the people who don't really listen to metal :) ).

Rolo Tomassi remind me of Akphaezya, which is totally a good thing.

Not every song, although Pray for Plague is epic and just the way I want my deathcore. Songs like Blessed with a Curse, Don't Go, Chelsea Grin, Anthem etc have more things to them imo.

Don't know if I mentioned this but man, In Dying Arms is amazing. Every song on their album "Boundaries" has something rememberable to it and it's definitely my favorite album of 2012.

You know what's hilarious about bands like BMTH? The lyrics

"I hate to say "I told you so"
But **** it, I told you so
And don't say a word, I already know"

"Let's ****, til the sun comes up."

I'm pretty sure that's intentionall. It's catchy and up beat sorta. I don't find it hilarious, slightly dorky if anything

I've never cared for their lyrics specifically though

I could debate with you for forever about how much I hate BMTH, but who wants to do that.

Dark Horse used redirect!

Disillusion's Back to the times of splendor is a RIDICULOUSLY GOOD Prog/Melodic Death metal album that I highly recommed. It might just be one of my favorite metal albums ever.

Another band that I highly recommend is Atheist, whose incredibly complex death metal is kind of like Alien Geometries in music form.

the only agalloch i've really sat down with is Marrow of the Spirit, which is one of the best albums I've ever heard. I was also really surprised when I learned that they are like from Texas or Arizona or something.

ARKAIK are pretty cool guys

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BTtmh_BmELY fun interesting tech metal. i like it because it's pretty midtempo for the genre

also, kinda sad because this group Ascariasis broke up. they put out a really nice EP last year and I was stoked to hear more from them. tech deathcore djent ****, i guess. idk

Arkaik put on a pretty decent live show if you ever get the chance to see 'em.
I have no idea if this means "I thought you said you were going to post good bands?" or "There are actual good bands in this thread?"
Definitely the second. Atheist is one of my favorite bands ever (though that spot will probably forever go to Oingo Boingo). This thread seems to have a ton of bland metalcore bands and tuneless tech-death. Though I'm pretty sure the flipside of that is everyone thinking my posts are full of awfulness too so it's balanced I guess.

This really saddens me, Ascariasis had great potential, seems like quite a shame to lose them.

I just realized how hilarious that "Djent tone" is.

"Alright guys, we're going to use a modeling thing known and praised for its diversity. As such, we're going to use it to get a specific guitar that tons of bands are using and we'll use it forever."

this is one trend in modern heavy music that i absolutely despise. whenever a band comes on with that axefx **** i want to leave. like you said, it's potential as a dynamic tone-machine is wonderful but bands literally use a copy-paste "me too" way of deciding on tones. i hate that flabby no mids digitized sound that is now finding its way into non-"djent" styles of metal. ****. get your own sounds you ****s

The absolute truth, this **** has gotten so damn annoying, that's what has been turning me away from Volumes and all those other bands, its the SAME DAMN TONE! :c

Is it even possible to create that many different tones though?
(Honest question from someone who doesn't play guitar.)

It's certainly possible. Hell, I've got this multieffects pedal that can create more tones than those people that shell out $2,000 for an Axe FX.

On another note, check out the list of people who use the Axe FX. You've got the guitarist for billy joel, and the guitar players for Journey, Rush, Megadeth, Cee lo green, Madonna, BTBAM, King's X, Bela fleck & the fleck toes, and mother****ing Guthrie Govan. It seems like this thing really is that versatile.

I just listened to Colors by Between the Buried and Me. It was pretty good, but not really my style, considering I'm not really into metal in the first place...

What other albums by this band do you guys recommend?

Sounds a hell lot like early contortionist. Hopefully they'll also ditch the bad chug parts.

Also this was in the suggested videos

lol I clicked on that related video too
both those songs were pretty good, I haven't listened to post metal in a long time

Either Alaska or Parallax: Future sequence

Parallax II, has much less hardcore punk influences (The big influence on most of the heavy parts in colors, if you didn't like that) yet keeps the genre busting stuff (Incluing bloom, which wouldn't sound out of place on a mr bungle album)

Also I feel like you might like Baroness

Avoid the self titled album, The Silent Circus and Parallax: Hypersleep Dialogues. I say just go straight for Parallax 2: Future Sequence. It's hard to say for sure because you didn't say what you didn't care for and what parts you liked and so on.

Stuff that I've been listening to:

Artillery is a pretty cool prog-thrash gem. Mad tight.

I had honestly forgotten how good Testament is. Easily my favorite 80s metal band. Alex Skolnik is a joy to listen to.

Alcest's Ècailles de lune is probably one of the most beautiful albums I have ever heard. Great album art to boot.

finally listened to the new Alcest. it's really good. it's a great companion to Ecailles de Lune! the covers are even similar and I'm sure the lyrics are as well

also listened to Danza IIII. I like it, but does this band not have a bassist or is their mixing just absolutely abysmal? for being a band with a bunch of 8 strings the sound has such a weak low-end and nothing really has balls. love the squealies and the tappy riffs of course

I started with Alaska. But I would get ahead and say start with The Great Misdirect or Parallax 1. Those two albums blow Colors out the water.

Parallax 1 is the only btbam work i consider straight up bad. the laziness of the songwriting on those songs is such a bummer. it made me not be looking forward to Parallax 2 at all and was pleasantly surprised.
