High in the sky, in deep space, on a distant planet. 10 Crewmates must work together to survive, but they must be careful, because there are imposters among us.

That is the premise of the game Among Us, a fun little game that's all the rage among streamers right now. Even I like it, it's free on mobile if you want to give it a try. Try not to be sus though. And expect to be thrown out for no reason.

Do they belong in Smash??

......
Probably not.

But I like them. They'd make a nice Mii Costume regardless.

Ohoho...! I've been waiting for one of these!... which is why I didn't notice it for so long... nor did I make it myself.

Enough about that. Let's talk. Challenger Pack X: Crewmate? (The CREWMATE is Up to the Task!/The IMPOSTOR is Among Us!)

Crewmate? is special because of their gimmick... Impostor! During the scene where the characters are present, you can see whether you're actually playing as a Crewmate or an Impostor. By default, there's a 70% chance you get Crewmate, and a 30% chance you get Impostor. They have identical physics, normals and vanity animations, but completely different specials. Crewmates have Visual Task inspired specials, while Impostors have their own devious set. Also, all Among Us colors are present and selectable, except Tan and Fortegreen, separately from their 8 alts (Default, Astronaut, Captain, Mechanic, Military, Miner, Winter, and Archaeologist, with matching hat and body skins). 12 x 8 gives them a total possible combination set of 96, more than anybody else in the series. It is very easy to find the costume you want. Like in Among Us, the hands are detached and only appear when necessary.

Rather than go over all the moves, I want to look at their specials in focus. Kirby's Copy Ability changes based on whether he copies Crewmate or Impostor. Update: Now includes Smash attacks!
  • Forward Smash: Repair Drill
    • A small square with a ( ! ) appears in front of the Crewmate?, who taps on it five times. The first four hits are rapid damage, and the final hit is the launching one. The strongest smash attack for damage, but behind the down smash for knockback. Deals around 17% damage uncharged if all hits hit, 25.5% fully charged if all hits hit.
  • Up Smash: Assemble Artifact
    • A purple crystal forms its pieces above the Crewmate?'s head, who is holding up the bottom piece. The charge portion is before holding it up, and the attack is one big hitbox. 14% uncharged, 19% fully charged. The weakest smash attack, but also the fastest.
  • Down Smash: Chart Course
    • A small rocket ship moves in circles around the Crewmate? as they spin around, before retreating back into them. The ship is the damaging part, and it's the strongest smash attack in terms of knockback, but is behind the forward smash for damage output. 15% uncharged, 22% fully charged.
Time to verify the Crewmates!
  • Crewmate Neutral: Clear Asteroids
    • A crosshair appears in front of the crewmate upon pressing B. Press B again to shoot out a mini laser that moves at a relatively quick pace, but isn't very damaging.
    • When Kirby has the Clear Asteroids copy ability, he wears a visor like the Crewmates that covers his face and mouth. It is translucent, and you can see his entire face beneath.
  • Crewmate Side: Prime Shields
    • A group of six white hexagons appear in front of the Crewmate, who uses it as a nullifier and/or a reflector for any attack or projectile. It works up to 6 times in a row, before the next attack will break it and put the Crewmate into stun. It then resets after that, or after 10 seconds without being used, whichever comes first. Every time it's used, one of the hexagons will turn red.
  • Crewmate Up: Empty Garbage
    • A draft of wind, alongside a bunch of garbage, will carry the Crewmate upwards before they become helpless. The rise is comparable to the height of Spring Jump, but there is also no defense at all. Be careful.
  • Crewmate Down: Submit Scan
    • When used, the Crewmate stops moving and begins focusing energy. A green bar appears above the Crewmate, showing how long they have until the scan is complete. At 20% scan, all negative statuses are cleared (mini, slowed or reversed, among others). At 40% scan, Crewmate gains a temporary defense boost comparable to Shield Shulk, though without the weight gain. At 60% scan, Crewmate gets a power boost comparable to Oomph. At 80% scan, Crewmate gets a speed boost comparable to Acceleratle. At 100% scan, the Crewmate heals 50% of damage!
    • You can see the scanner move around the crewmate. The scan takes around 10 seconds, and can be cancelled at any time, and/or interrupted by being attacked. This move is present to prevent stalling by undoing all progress if the player attempts to stall them out. To prevent this move from being used to stall itself, Submit Scan can only be used once for every 20 seconds, with that number shrinking the longer you go without taking damage.
    • All buffs last for around 8 seconds.
  • Final Smash (Crewmate): Emergency Meeting
    • A cinematic FS (it's strange because I despise how overused they are in the DLC, but here we are), where the trigger is the Emergency Button being pressed. That sounds out a very short shockwave in front of the Crewmate. It can only hit one person at a time. If it hits, they are pulled into a cinematic in which they are immediately voted out and thrown out of the airlock of the Skeld. It is a one-hit KO, no ifs, ands or buts.
    • :ultbowser::ultbowserjr::ultganondorf::ultkrool::ultbrawler::ultgunner::ultswordfighter::ultpiranha::ultwario::ultdarksamus::ultridley::ultwolf: and the Impostor are all given the message [X was the Impostor.] Everybody else: "[X was not the Impostor.]"
And now for the Impostors.
  • Impostor Neutral: Sabotage
    • A menu appears similar to that of Hero's Command Selection above the portrait for Impostor, but with four icons instead. They can choose one of four options. Only one option is available at a time.
      • Sabotage Lights: The entire screen goes dark, except for the Impostor who has a wide berth of light eminating around them for 7 seconds. Can force players to approach by making them need to see where they are. Cooldown of 15 seconds. This move does affect teammates, so it can be unwieldy in team matches.
      • Sabotage Ledges: All ledges have a dark, red glow to them, and can only be used by the Impostor (and their teammates) for 5 seconds. Cooldown of 20 seconds. An extremely powerful tool when used properly, can make recoveries fail or force recovering high.
      • Sabotage Shields: Shields just do not work for 5 seconds (except for the Impostor and teammates), being penetrated as if they were never there. Cooldown of 20 seconds. If you wanna play aggro, now's the time. But it doesn't do anything to dodging, so you still can't hit through that.
      • Sabotage Projectiles: Projectiles do not work for 10 seconds (except for the Impostor and teammates), phasing through every Fighter and summon. They still collide with items and walls. Tired of projectile spammers? Well just get rid of what makes them do that. That being said, this move is alarmingly powerful on some fighters such as Mega Man, so in exchange its Cooldown is 30 seconds.
      • All Sabotages can be interrupted by hitting the Impostor during the selection process, in which case nothing happens.
    • Kirby DOES NOT copy this move. Giving him the power to do that would be horrifying. And anything to make it less difficult to make.
    • This move is so mechanically complex that I don't see it as very realistic. Maybe lights, but everything else seems brutal to program. But if they can pull off Steve, I think they can pull this off too.
  • Impostor Side: Gunshot
    • Joker's Gun and Byleth's Side Special had a baby, and this is the result. It hits once really hard, but has notable ending lag and is not a projectile, just a midrange attack. Like Joker, it gets weaker the further away the attack is, but it scales much harder, going from a very strong attack to an extremely weak one instead.
    • Kirby copies THIS move instead. With the Gunshot copy ability, he appears like a Crewmate, but his mouth is not covered by the visor, just his eyes. The "visor" is also opaque, making it impossible to see underneath.
  • Impostor Up: Place Vent/Vent Away/Tongue Spear
    • The first time you use it on the ground, you place a ventilation shaft down. Or rather, one spawns at your feet. This can happen as many times as the number of opponents you have to face. After that, the next usage of it will have you jump into a vent and teleport to that spot.
    • If there is no vent when you use this move, well you have to recover somehow. So that long tongue of yours seems like it'd be helpful. It's like Byleth's Up Special, except worse in just about every regard. Including range, so try not to rely on this as your primary recovery.
  • Impostor Down: Tongue Lance
    • You know Ridley's Skewer? Well, imagine that, but with a third, or a fourth of the damage output and no knockdown effect. However, when an opponent is hit with the sweetspot at over 175%... boom, instantly dead. Complete with Special/Final Zoom.
    • In the air, the move is weaker and takes until 190% to Instakill.
  • Final Smash (Impostor): Reactor Sabotage
    • Another Cinematic, this one starts with the Impostor slashing with their knife a short distance forward. If it hits any players (up to 3), they are sent to the Reactor Room of the Skeld, and the Reactor proceeds to explode. This is a very damaging FS, and if anybody present passes 100% when the cinematic ends, they instantly die.

The stage is an easy one: the Skeld. I dunno how it'd play, but the stage has to be iconic and the Skeld is not only the OG but also the most popular map. Also saves on resources for the Final Smashes using the same area as the Stage, just different rooms.

Spirits and music are probably what thwart this from happening, as there isn't really a lot for Among Us to work with. Tasks maybe, but that still leaves the music. Perhaps you could borrow from Henry Stickmin?

As weird as it would be, I would love to see the Among Us player character join the battle! Whether it'd be a Crewmate, Impostor or a combination of both would be another matter entirely.

This is actually pretty good way to combine both roles.

The two major changes I would make are to not have the Crewmate FS be a no ifs-ands-or-buts OHKO because that'd be broken, even for a Final Smash (like maybe an 80% OHKO FS that has the Crewmate blast them from Weapons to deal damage, to make it somewhat favorable compared to similar FSs, particularly the Impostor version), and maybe have whether the fighter is Crewmate or Impostor determined/potentially changed each stock, so that way Impostor is more likely to appear at some point in the match, as well as to help disincentivize a player from trying to Soft-Reset the match for an Impostor role.

I did say by default, but never elaborated on what that meant.

If the player holds the Directional Pad left or right while items are off, or it's a Games & More mode/World of Light, then they will respectively guarantee Crewmate/Impostor. Keeps the random thrill of seeing what you get alive, while not making Crewmate/Impostor not worth using in competitive play or for singleplayer challenges. As items off is the primary pivot for competitive play, this feels like the best factor to making it selectable. Changing mid match, absolutely not. You get what you get and you fight with what you get, no take backs. Besides, changing on the fly just makes it really strange to play.

On the Crewmate FS: I can see how you might think it's broken, but if I had to give a comparison on how much "range" it has... think Kirby's jab. Basically you need to be in the perfect position to use it, like how in Among Us you can't just emergency meeting willy-nilly and not have the team turn on you for it. But when used properly, it is a powerful tool and your best friend. So, I can't say I'd want it nerfed. (Besides, it'd be kind of hard to imagine what could justify it being survivable if your percent is low enough. In Among Us you don't come back from that. Though, that alternative idea could work.)

For the crewmate/impostor bit: An ability to choose each match makes sense for a serious standpoint. My thought process was dying makes the player "restart the game" in a sense, hence why there would be a re-roll, sort of like how Pokemon Trainer losing a stock forces a switch-out. I also brought it up to help the two feel like one unified fighter rather than two separate ones hidden in the same CSS button. It would incentivize an Among Us player to know how to play both rather than only one, as you never know what you're gonna get in the actual Among Us until you are, no matter how much you want a certain role. Regardless, this little debate of ours is really interesting because a good case can be made for both sides.

Final Smash: Yeah it'd need stupid-short range if it were to be an OHKO. A small fighter's jab would make sense.

Let's do some minor animations, shall we?

On Screen Appearance: (Stage Intro) The Crewmate and Impostor share an intro, which is the same as the animation for when you join a lobby in Among Us. You teleport onto the stage.

Idle Animation: Crewmate? leans forwards and backwards, or their visor gleams.

Up Taunt: Crewmate? makes a "Shhhhh!" motion, like Red just before you start a game.

Side Taunt: Crewmate? walks forwards and backwards in place, like the little "dance" players do in among us.

Down Taunt: Crewmate? pulls out a megaphone and mimes yelling into it, before putting it away.

Walk and Run: The former is the same animation as in the game, while the running is original and has them swing their hands and tilt their body forward while walking faster. (They have a pretty slow walk, but #20th place in running. Partly because you're gonna need to run really fast to survive, and partly because players do tend to up the speed on the Crew and Imps.)

--- Edit: Victory Animations ---

Like the Specials, the victory animations of Crewmate? change based upon whether you got a Crewmate or an Impostor. The victory theme, be it the source track or a rearrangement of them, is also the jingle that plays when that faction wins a round. That being said, the general idea is somewhat similar between the held direction to guarantee them.
  • Crew-Up: A group of five Crewmates (the winner + the four colors not present in the match, assuming an 8p game) have a group hug, shaken after surviving the ordeal.
  • Imp-Up: A group of three Impostors (the winner + two of the four colors not present in the match) do the evil-hand-rub-thing, as if plotting their next attack.
  • Crew-Left: The Crewmate teleports onto the victory screen and strikes a pose.
  • Imp-Left: The Impostor pops out of a vent on the ground, and does their infamous Tongue Lance.
  • Crew-Right: The camera remains dark at first, but eventually the Crewmate turns the lights back on and gives a thumbs up.
  • Imp-Right: The camera goes dark, with the only illumination being the Impostor, pointing their knife towards the camera.
  • Crew-Lose: The bisected corpse of a fallen Crewmate is seen in the background, while the ghost of said Crewmate claps.
  • Imp-Lose: Same as the Crewmate, except they hold a fist out as if to swear revenge instead of applauding.
Crewmate Boxing Ring Title: Mira Employee In Peril

Impostor Boxing Ring Title: Alien With Shapeshifting Powers

I must say I love the idea of a fighter with alternate specials, especially if you get to change after getting KO'd. If you ask me, I'd make the Crewmate/Impostor choice invisible to the other players and have the Crewmate?'s identity be unknown until they out themselves with a special attack, at which point Crewmate?'s name changes to Crewmate or Impostor (maybe you could go the Joker route and have the fighter portrait change accordingly). This even works with the Crewmate special moves from the WIP moveset some posts ago, as they're all visual tasks that confirms their identity.

Perhaps the identity-outing attack could be stronger or have additional effects? For example, if Impostor's Tongue Lance does 20% damage normally, the disguise breaking version would deal 60% or 80% damage instead.

Finally truly updated the moveset!

A preliminary version of Submit Scan is now included. In addition, Smash attacks have been added, and I intend to include every move at some point.

Also...

This idea is very good, but it would be extremely hard to implement in local games where you can already see the identity. Unless it displayed only "Crewmate?" at all times during the match intro, rather than saying Crewmate or Impostor.

But I'd like this. For what would happen to the specials:
  • Clear Asteroids shoots a much bigger, stronger, faster shot. And it locks onto the target for the first shot only.
  • Prime Shields has golden hexagons and can be used once free of charge.
  • Empty Garbage would not put you in a helpless state, and anything, even another Empty Garbage, can be used again.
  • Submit Scan completes 20% faster.
  • Sabotage lasts 50% longer.
  • Gunshot deals 1.4x damage, though it has the same knockback.
  • Your first vent cannot be destroyed until you use it.
  • Like you said, Tongue Lance deals double damage, or 40%. To compensate for this, the move was nerfed to instant kill at higher percents. It doesn't deal 60% because that gets pretty close to broken.

I support! I've been getting into Among Us and I think a gimmick where each stock is randomized to make you either a crewmate or an impostor with unique abilitites is a great idea. I don't think it's going to happen since the game got popular after the pass was decided, but man this would be cool.

Among Us took home both awards it was nominated for, and Fall Guys took some too, I think Fall Guy and Imposter should be added. in some form, then add Destiny Guardian and you have popular games trinity

Honestly now that Among Us shadowdropped on the Switch a couple days ago. I can see them doing a Mii Fighter Costume for the Crewmates that functions like Bomberman's Mii Costume with the color you choose changing the color of the Bomberman.

I really like these multicolored bean people from a popular 2020 game and would love to see them in Smash!

Oh yeah, Among Us would be really cool too!

honestly, the amount of great fan movesets I've seen have convinced me they should be in.

especially this one:
they will at best get a Mii costume but I would love to see these guys.
