The Importance of Characters

I've seen so many people arguing over who is more deserving to be in Brawl. My question to you is, what makes one character more deserving than the other?

Let's look at some different "requirements" that most of these characters may have.

-Popularity of the character's game.
-Main Character
-Main Enemy
-Recurring character, usually of great importance
-Popularity
-Popularity outside of gaming (Such as Sonic and Mario)
-How long they've been around
-Amount of games in which they've been

Now, these are just a few examples I've thought of. I'm sure you have more.

Now, which of these requirements, or any others if you'd like to add them, are the most important to you when you think of characters that you want to be in Brawl. Do you think being the main character in a less popular game is more important than being a recurring character in a more popular game? Do you think the amount of games the said character has been in is more important than how long that character has been around?

Order them in importance, compare characters to each other, and just let me know what you think.

I'll post my thoughts a bit later. I'd include them in this original post, but my friend wants to go get food with me, so I must go. Hopefully I can edit this later.

Have fun.

The most important quality of a deserving character for me anyway would have to be uniqueness, if they have the potential to play unlike any other character then I think they would be very good characters.

Main characters, even from older games, should come first always. Having more lead characters leads to more franchise variety, which in turn comes with more stage, music variety

Another important factor IMO is INNOVATION.

Every Newcomer is innovative in his own way.

-Pit: Ability to fly freely. Guided arrows. Double sword. = Unique x3
-ZSS: Post-Final Smash transformation, whip character, "hawt'' = Uniqueness X3
-Wario: Alt. Costume, rides bike, builds up gas = Uniqueness X3
-Pokemon Trainer: 3 Pokemon in 1, Stamina, triple FS. = Uniqueness x3
-Metaknight: First Glider, lightning fast sword maneuvers = Uniqueness x2
-Diddy Kong: Aimable Peanut qun, Exploding-jetpacks, recovering move = Un x3
-Snake: Military arsenal, box, comes from an M rated game (or you get the point) = Unx3
-Olimar: Can only attack with Pikmin..

etc.

See, my POV is, they have to bring something UNIQUE. For some reason I can't see Bowser Jr., for example, bringing anything new. People will jump to say "Teh BRUSH!!!''... Well I say "Lip's Stick!" now
gimme original characters!

I'd say francise popularity would be most important. Mario got the largest amount of characters in a francise with Pokemon and Zelda tieing for second, three of the most popular francises Nintendo owns.
