What I am about to type is nothing anyone on the forum does not already know. Judging by the title, most of you have probably guessed that I am going to make comparisons and contrasts to the 3 SSB games, and you would guess correctly. However, there is more to this thread, hence I felt it worthy enough to post a new thread. Allow me first to post some individual aspects of the SSB gaming series:
*Note: these are very brief descriptions*
1.) Super Smash Brothers, Nintendo 64
The game that started it all and is an instant classic. The game was simple, take your favorite character through the levels and beat your opponent to advance on. The ultimate fight was against Master Hand, a literal gloved-hand that could crush you if you were not quick on your feet.
It was a simple game with 8 starting characters: Mario, Samus Aran, Donkey Kong, Yoshi, Pikachu, Link, Kirby, and Fox McCloud. However, 4 secret characters were unlocked in the forms of Luigi, JigglyPuff, Ness and Captain Falcon.
There wasn't much to game outside of the 1P mode. There were target contests, boarding the platforms and races at certain intervals in the 1P game, making it a simple game with a simple agenda: kick the crap out of each other. The game was well received and thus, created...
2.) Super Smash Brothers: Melee, Nintendo Game Cube
This was a huge leap from the 64 versions, and not only in terms of graphics. The orignal 8 returned along with Ness and Captain Falcon as opening characters, but they were not alone. Zelda/Sheik, Peach, Bowser and the Ice Climbers also joined them. We would discover JigglyPuff and Luigi as just 2 of the many other unlockable characters.
Speaking of new characters, there were many. Marth of Fire Emblem, MewTwo of Pokemon, Luigi of the Mario Brothers, JigglyPuff of Pokemon, were all unlockable characters, but it did not end there. The idea of clones, characters with similar or sometimes exact movesets as a default character was introduced, which included: Roy of Fire Emblem, Pichu of Pokemon, Young Link of LoZ, Dr. Mario of Dr. Mario games, Falco of Star Fox, and Ganondorf of Loz, all made up the clone roster. The game doubled in characters, with 25 total.
However, Melee did not end there. It still had the basic Classic play to get to the Master Hand, but noone expected the new arsenal the weapons MH would have, or a partner: Crazy Hand, just as tough as MH is not more powerful. Break the targets returned, along with Race to the Finish and...trophies? More on that later.
2 more 1P modes were added: All-Star, which tested your endurance, and Adventure mode, which took you from stage to stage in a story type manner. Other 1P modes were Home Run contest, which was a lot of fun crushing a sandbag over 1700+ feet, Target Test, Multiman Melee, and Event Matches, which included over 50 events that allowed players to collect trophies and unlock characters and stages.
Trophies were introduced, which were of both playable characters and characters of other Nintendo games. Each gave a brief description of the character or a history of the character's games. They could be collected via the lottery or during the Snag the Trophy element of 1P mode.
Melee also introduced Zelda/Sheik, the first character that could transform from one form to another. Sheik would be come the dominant form.
Melee also used charged up smash attacks for the first time. Players could increase the power of certain attacks by charging up the power of their attacks. This was not seen in the 64 verison and proved to be very effective.
More characters and more features made Melee a hit and called for a sequel...
3.) Super Smash Brothers: Brawl, Nintendo Wii
3 games, 3 consoles, 3 times the expectations. The announcement of Super Smash Brothers Brawl (SSBB) was received joyfully. Let's quickly look at what we have so far:
Characters are already about to equal Melee's roster of 25. As guessed, Mario, Fox, Link, Donkey Kong, Kirby, Yoshi, Samus Aran, and Pikachu, all return for the 3rd time. Bowser, the Ice Climbers, Princess Peach and Zelda all return as well. Sheik has not be confirmed at this time. Many characters, such as Luigi, Ness, Captain Falcon, JigglyPuff, MewTwo, Pichu, Roy, Marth, Dr. Mario, Young Link, Ganondorf, Falco, are still not confirmed as well. However a large number of new characters have been confirmed, many of whom were hopefull for Melee, now appear in Brawl: Those characters include: Wario, Pit, MetaKnight, Diddy King, Ike, King Dedede, Pokemon Trainer and Lucas make up the Nintendo reps.
A new and exciting aspect of the characters are third party reps. Two have been confirmed; Snake from the Metal Gear Solid series and long requested, Sonic the Hedgehog, who needs no introduction. Their introduction to the SSB series has opened up the door for other 3rd party character such as PacMan, RayMan, MegaMan, BomberMan, Simon Belmont and others are just few of the demanded characters.
Samus, as of now, takes over as the transforming character, turning from Full Armored Samus to Zero Suit Samus. The dominate form is yet to be established.
Brawl has introduced new levels and stages, more video footage for adventure mode, new music and superior graphics than Melee, but also many new aspects. They include online play, create a stage, Assist Trophies, and gliding characters (Charizard, Pit, MetaKnight) and so forth. A new story mode has been added dealing with the Subspace Emissary in Adventure mode, and Classic Mode returns as well.
While it is assumed most of Brawl will include aspects from Melee, a new and very cool feature has been added: The Final Smash. The final smash is acquired via the Smash Ball. The smash ball gives what ever character secures it, a powerful final move that can only be used once and causes great destruction to other players. Many of these are posted on Smashbrother.com.
Assist Trophies are aslo a large part of Brawl. These are like regular collectibel trophies, but they actually help fight in the game. These can be viewed via the Smashbrothers.com. Regular trophies and stickers will be there to collect.
What makes Brawl so highly anticipated is that it is even fully explored yet. Many questions remain. Characters, stages, music, villains, bosses, etc are all up in the air as of now.
But with so many great things to experience with Brawl, how can anyone look to SSB4? I can.
You've seen and experience the evolution of SSB, what do you expect for number 4? Many ideas include:
--Create a character
--Download-a-Character
--Alternate Character Forms (example: Mario can be Paper Mario or Dr. Mario but does not take up a roster spot, basically an alternate costume but with new moveset)
--Download a stage (from 64, Melee or newly created ones)
--Alertnate Final Smashes
--More 3rd Party characters
--RPG like style of learning special attacks
--And many more
So what do you want to see in SSB4? What are some of your expectations? Ask yourself, how can I make the next SSB better? CAN I make SSB better?
