Pokémon trainer
First appearance: Pokémon Red & Green/Blue for Nintendo Game Boy.
Who is the Pokémon Trainer?

A Pokémon Trainer is an individual who raises and trains various Pokémon and travel the region to compete through various battles and trials up until they reach the Pokemon league and face the elite four in order to become said region's champion.

Anyone can be a Pokémon Trainer, whether they are an ace trainer or a hiker to even a youngster who likes shorts because their comfy and easy to wear.

Pokémon Trainer in Smash:

Pokémon Trainer Discord
https://discord.gg/AW3CGmJ

The Pokémon Trainer is no stranger to the world of Smash, as he has appeared in the series before in Super smash Bros Brawl, there he stood in the background while using Squirtle, Ivysaur and Charizard as his main means of battle.

However, his appearance in the series didn't last long outside of that as he was soon cut from the roster of Super Smash Bros for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U.(presumably due to hardware limitations as transformation based characters where either done away with or altered) the only remnant of the trainer that remained in Smash 4 was Charizard who remained as the sole playable character.

That said, the Pokémon Trainer has been an important part of the Pokémon franchise for years and are the main playable characters in the mainline Pokémon games, now even more so than ever thanks to the Pokémon X and Y games and especially Sun and Moon where they are more involved with their partner Pokémon, whether It's through their customization, Pokémon refresh, or the bond they share as they unleash their full potential through Mega evolution and Z-Moves. One item in particular that was introduced in the Pokémon Sun and Moon games allowed the Pokémon Trainer and their Pokemon to work together, even outside of battle, working as a replacement for HM's, is the Ride pager.

This item allows the Pokémon Trainer to summon any Pokémon to help them out whenever they encounter any obstacles or challenges that they need to overcome. And they aren't just limited to the six that are in their current party.
In smash, the Pokémon Trainer can use this to work more like a summon based fighter and be more directly involved in battle rather than what was essentially another form of transformation based character that he was in Brawl. He can call upon any Pokémon for any given attacks and remove them when they are no longer in play.

Moveset:

Here is a lineup of Pokémon that the Pokémon Trainer would be able to summon with the pager. (Note: these are just the ones I thought up, if you have alternative or better idea's for Pokemon that the trainer can summon, do let me know.)

Normal moves

Rapid jab
Doublade is summoned, it cuts through the opponent repeatedly until it then cross cuts them away.

Side Smash
The trainer uses Aipom to slap the opponent away with it's large tail.
Up Smash
The trainer uses mawhile by putting it on their head and then letting it's large jaw bite down at any opponents that come from above
Down Smash
The trainer summons Tauros to deliver a large stomp to the ground

Side tilt
The trainer throws a rock
Up tilt
Doublade gets summoned to deliver two quick slashes up
Down tilt
Aipom moves its tail down along the trainer, can cause opponent to trip.

Front air
Trainer summons Doublade to do two quick jabs at the front
Back air
Doublade does two quick jabs at the back
Down air
Aipom slaps it's tail down very hard, which can be used as a meteor Smash.
Up air
Mawile's trap jaw bites up rapidly.

Grabs
The trainers summons Mawile to trap their opponents into the jaws of It's back, the player can then choose to either chew down on their opponent or throw them into any of the four directions.

Special moves.

Neutral special: Solar Beam
The trainer can summon one Leavanny in the field which will charge up a solar beam, the beam will take about 10 seconds to charge up, once It's ready it will launch a strong solar beam. Afterwards it will get tired and will be unable to be used again for another 20 seconds. As the Leavanny is charging up It's Solar beam, the trainer is free to get back into battle in the meantime, so they can use this to get their opponent into the Pokemon's line of fire.

Side special: Charge
When on the ground, the move will be Tauros charge, where the trainer momentarily gets on Taurus to charge in towards any given directions (Much like Wario's bike)
When used in the air, the trainer will instead summon Staraptor to do an aerial version of this move (Much like Villager's Lloid rocket)

Up special: Fly
The trainer will summon Staraptor to fly up high into the air and then descend quickly to the ground, any opponents in the way will be launched away. You can use the side special as you descend in order to turn the move into a more powerful Brave Bird.

Down Special: Stealth Rock
The trainer summons Mawile to spread stealth rocks in front of them that will remain there for about 5 seconds at a time, any incoming opponents that touch this will be receiving damage, however, it won't cause any flinching.

Final Smash:
Pokemon USUM spoiler

Light that Burns the Sky

The trainer will summon Necrozma (In a similar fashion as Captain Falcon's Blue Falcon, duck Hunt's Ducks etc)
Any opponents that get hit by it will be sent towards an Ultra Wormhole where the trainer will perform the Z-Move of Light that Burns the Sky, Necrozma will then turn into Ultra Necrozma and perform it's Z-move. Once the animation, finishes, the opponents are sent out of the wormhole and launched away.

Addittional summon pokemon idea's by Luminario Luminario

Well, there's a few off the top of my head.
For a flier, there's no competition for Pidgeot. If you wanna go comical with it however Tropius and Golurk are good choices too.
Meganium might be a better, more recognisable choice for a Solar Beam user, where it's neck petals could glow more depending on the charge. It could also be used in multiple Vine Whip attacks.
Espeon/Umbreon and Plusle/Minun are good duo Pokemon for attacks like down smash or nair to cover both sides. Plusle and Minun could also have a 2 part attack that has you place them both in different places one by one, and when they're both set down they create a line of electricity to each other. Espeon and Umbreon can also have a light/dark thing going on, where Espeon attacks with light during up air/up tilt and Umbreon attacks with darkness for down air/down tilt.
Clefairy could also be brought back to use Metronome, or Castform can be there to use Hail to create a cloud that sends down hail to do no-knockback damage.
Sylveon's also practically the mascot fairy Pokemon that can also use it's feelers as whips or to grab opponents.
Wobbuffet could be a counter Pokemon. Butterfree could use status-inducing powder attacks. Abra could teleport. Diglett could be a ground trap.

This one is more focused on the Eeveelutions, by Luminario Luminario

Jab: PT holds his arm out as Eevee pops onto his shoulder and swipes forwards with a claw. 2nd hit has Eevee flip forwards off of his arm and swipe downwards with its tail. 3rd hit has Eevee backflip upwards to do an upward swipe with the tail before blinking out of existence at the apex of the jump.
Ftilt: Jolteon appears in front of PT's head to do a quick downward slash with its paw as it falls to the ground.
Utilt: Vaporeon jumps off of PT's head to swipe upwards with its tail.
Dtilt: Flareon spews out a small ember along the ground.
Dash: PT skids along the ground as Eevee headbutts forwards hard.

Fsmash: Lava Plume. PT points forwards as Flareon hits the ground with both paws, causing an eruption of fire in front.
Usmash: PT throws Jolteon upwards as it spins, doing multihit damage above before shooting the opponents away. PT catches it on the way down.
Dsmash: PT brings his arms in before lowering his body and extending his arms outwards to each side, as Vaporeon creates a splash of water on each side.

Nair: Espeon and Umbreon appear and circle PTs waist in a mix of lilac and scarlet light. Hitbox is similar to Peach's nair. PT holds his arms to his chest and spins with the Pokemon.
Fair: Icy Wind. Glaceon appears in PTs arms and blows an icy wind forwards. Has a slight windbox to it for foes out of range, similar to Palutena's smash attacks.
Bair: Leaf Blade. Leafeon appears behind PT and spins downwards, slashing opponents in front with its tail. PT looks backwards, similar in pose to Peach's backwards jumping animation (if anyone knows what that looks like besides me)
Uair: PT turns his body so that he's facing upwards as he holds Espeon, who's also facing upwards. Espeon then creates a ball of light that explodes half a second later. 2 hits.
Dair: Mean Look. PT turns to face the ground with Umbreon in his arms instead. Umbreon then creates a ghostly face with glowing red eyes that hits opponents away.

Grab: Sylveon pops up to constrict the opponent with its feelers.
Pummel: Sylveon squeezes its feelers tighter.
Fthrow: Sylv lets the opponent go then slaps them with 2 feelers hard in a X motion.
Bthrow: Sylv simply throws them backwards around PT.
Uthrow: Sylv summons a small Fairy Wind tornado that shoots the opponent upwards. Has an upwards windbox on opponents outside the grab.
Dthrow: Sylv lifts them up then whacks them into the ground hard.

B: Eevee Assist. The main unique part of this moveset. Summons the last Eeveelution used to do an attack. Only good for one charge, as pressing B after using this move simply Summons Eevee, so you have to re-use the specific Eeveelution move to re-summon it. Solo Espeon and Umbreon attacks both summon them both regardless. PT performs the specific Z move ending pose for the type of Eeveelution summoned.
Eevee: Simply headbutts forwards. Good range.
Vaporeon: Water Pulse. Shoots a water ring forwards that expands, revealing a blind spot in the centre of the projectile. Goes through stages.
Jolteon: Discharge. A rather defensive move. Jolteon immediately creates a shockwave of electricity around itself, with a range that covers all of PT.
Flareon. Fire Spin. Flareon creates a small vortex of fire a small distance in front of it, reaching up to around half of PT's height. Multihit and hits the opponent straight up for follow up attacks. Blind spot close to PT. Similar to Palutena's Explosive Flame.
Espeon + Umbreon: Reflect + Payback. combination of a reflector and a counter. Espeon appears in front to create a barrier of purple light that reflects projectiles, as Umbreon apppears behind and readies itself to counter. Only projectiles shot to the front of PT are reflected, while only attacks that hit from behind are countered. PT's pose is the Psychic Z move pose unless Umbreon counters something, where he turns and performs the Dark Z pose.
Leafeon: Magical Leaf. Leafeon throws out a single rainbow leaf that slightly follows the nearest opponent as it moves forwards.
Glaceon: Ice Shard. Glaceon shoots out a fast shard of ice straight forwards.
Sylveon: Draining Kiss. Sylveon shoots out a love heart that floats forwards. If it hits an opponent then half the % dealt heals PT. Comboes from down throw at low %.

Side B: Leaf Blade. PT flies forwards as Leafeon slices upwards with it's tail. Good as a combo starter but unsafe on shield.

Up B: Fairy Wind. PT hold Sylveon in his arms as they're both surrounded by a transluscent pink tornado that lifts them up. At the end PT releases Sylveon upwards as he then freefalls. multihit during the rise but low knockback at the end.

Down B: Hail. Glaceon appears and creates a small grey cloud just above PT's head that floats forwards, letting down small shards of ice periodically. no knockback damage. Range is just before 3/4ths of FD. Shards can be reflected but not cloud.

Final Smash. Evoboost Rainbow. PT summons Eevee to shoot forwards at high speed. If Eevee hits an opponent then they're trapped as the different Eeveelutions warp in to attack from all angles, resulting in heavy damage and knockback.

Taunt 1: Eevee warps in as PT grabs it then hugs it, then lets it warp out.
Taunt 2: Flips up a Pokeball then grabs it out of the air.
Taunt 3: Performs a random Z move dance.

Not super confident about the FS idea but whatever. Each Eeveelution warps in as soon as the attack is inputted and warps out as soon as the attack is over or PT was hit out of using it, with a colour coded flash of light to indicate exactly which Eeveelution was used.

Alternate costumes.

Much like Bowser jr and Villager, the Pokémon Trainer can have multiple alternate costumes representing various main protagonists throughout all the Pokémon generations.

Albeit the number may be a bit too high to include every single one of them, they may be able to include at least four males and four female's to have a set of 8. Red, Ethan, May, Dawn and Serena seem to be particularly popular trainers that can be used (If their individual proportions work out)

Pro's:
  • The Pokémon Trainer is an iconic part of the Pokémon franchise and due to their appearance back in Brawl, It's clear that Sakurai has tried to implement them in Smash before (albeit a bit wonky)

Con's:
  • Sakurai is kind of infamous for not really changing up characters from previous Smash games too drastically from their previous incarnations.
  • Pokémon Trainers aren't exactly known to engage into battle themselves other than at the Safari Zone (sort of) and a certain kid from Pallet Town who headbutted a scientist and tried to punch a Mewtwo once....

As rare as it would be I'd love to see a trainer actually enter the fray. Nice idea using the ride pager to explain the quick summons.
I'm not sure on some of your choices for Pokemon summons though. I know you picked 1 Pokemon per gen but they'd likely choose more iconic Pokemon like Pidgeot, Eevee evos, and starters who aren't in Smash.

Yeah they would most likely go for more iconic Pokemon, I did mainly go for one Pokemon per gen, if you know of a better line up or moves for them to go with, do feel free to let me know.

Oh wow, there are some great idea's here, would you mind if I added them to the OP, credit to you of course. ^^

Agreed, having the Trainer as a summoner based fighter opens up doors for various unique moves involving Pokemon that wouldn't have much chance at Smash on their own or through a Poke Ball, but still have their abilities realized.

Since Nintendo embraces memes now, there's only one true viable style/team set for the Trainer.

I would love an individual pokemon trainer in smash. Stamina idea in Brawl was awful, but i still think having a trainer would be great.

Heck, we could go further & have a human character from the franchise that doesn't even use Pokemon in Smash at all. A fair number of the human in the world

Multiple fighting type specialists are trained martial artists, naturally very capable of doing some fighting of their own. Chuck from GSC in particular fought a machoke in the anime (probably not the only occurrence of human vs. pokemon combat in the franchise).

Similarly psychic type specialists have a tendency to display their own psychic abilities, telekinesis being particularly common.

Then there are ninja trainers who...........do ninja stuff. They particularly seem to love the use of poison tactics.

Lt. Surge is a veteran who very likely has killed human & pokemon alike in the past.

While it probably applies to all of the villain factions to some degree, Team Rocket especially utilizes whips, traps, and other non-lethal weaponry for their monster-trafficking operations. Additionally, Koga, Sabrina, & Surge were all Rocket members in the Pokemon Adventures manga. So those 3 have even more moveset potential than most other trainers.

But even the basic hero trainers could still be feasible with the application of the various items they carry.
-Safari Zone rock: Pretty standard projectile
-Pester ball: a stunning weapon
-Bicycle: Used like Wario's side-b to run over opponents
-Escape Rope: a tether recovery
-Poke' doll: something that can absorb a hit
-Rebel: no damage but high knockback spray
-Fishing rod: Hookshot-like grab
-Poke' Flute: soundwave attack

I'd like to see items and such being used in a Trainer moveset, but I can't see them not using mostly Pokemon. Come to think of it they could have a special that lets them cycle through the different Key Items they have in their bag. Something like holding B lets you cycle through the items but tapping B lets you use it, a reference to setting an item to the shortcut button.

I've always liked the idea of a Pokémon Trainer in Smash, so I'm definitely supporting this. It doesn't really matter to me how he/she is implemented, I'd probably be excited either way.

This might be a stretch, but I wonder if a possible Final Smash could be the Trainer calling a legendary Pokémon, and depending on the Gen (if the costumes are different-Gen Trainers), the legendary changes- e.g., Ethan calling Suicune, Hilbert calling Zekrom. I don't see it happening, and it'd be a lot of work for a purely aesthetic change, but I think it'd be cool.

A paralyzed enemy isn't defeated, just easier to pick off. XY confirmed that wars in the pokemon world are still lethal so it seems doubtful Surge's hands are completely clean. Plus the guy was talking to a 10 year old, he could've skimmed certain gruesome details of his past life on purpose.

I suppose they could also do like Peach's side smash attack and have them cycle through their items in a set order. Poke Block > Safari Rock > Pester Ball > Poke Block etc.

Sounds like an interesting idea, though it might indeed be a bit difficult to implement since their hitboxes and everything will most probably vary, which I'm not sure if Sakurai would want to do that for an alt.

I don't support a Training fighting on it's own or taking hits in battle themselves. That never happened in game, and the Trainer is supposed to be pretty much helpless on it's own. Bad representation. Give me back a Brawl styled Pokemon Trainer without the damn stamina gimmick, and allow to use whichever Pokemon you want in a certain order of stocks or something similar.

That's essentially what a summoner does, to call forth creatures to protect them in battles as they won't be able to do as much on their own, that's kind of how he was in Brawl as well (Even though it was technically a transformation character in disguise for the Pokemon he put forth..)

If they can make him work this time around in his Brawl style then that's fine as well (Although I don't see transformation characters returning as it was a fairly unpopular concept since it's inception back in Melee and I don't see them putting Charizard back with the trainer), otherwise, this can also be an alternative.

I'd support this, actually. I loved the idea that was in Brawl of being able to swap out Pokemon. However, I would make some slight changes, such as not swapping Pokemon when you die. Make down-taunt the activation to swap Pokemon and make it so you can't hurt or be hurt after swapping for a very, very short time. Thus, swapping out doesn't get you punished.

Star Hill. Why do you ask?
i support this
i wanted him back since the day Charizard was confirmed to come back alone
i am not into the summoning stuff idea but there is alot of items that you obtain in pokemon games that could create the whole moveset for it such as bicycle, escape rope, fishing rod, camera, healing, throw different type of pokeballs (each with a different damage just like :4peach: down b) and many other items this is how i imagin him fighting.
i think the idea of summoning should go to a Fossil fighter or a Card hero fighter since they dont have enough items to make up a whole moveset for them

I support.
Although I love Trainer as a character, now I too miss Squirtle and Ivysaur.
I don't know what to support anymore... But I guess I'm good with either Squirtle+Ivy, or Trainer.

I had a concept for the implementation of a new type of Trainer.

Basically. The Trainer has moves of his own, and only summons Pokémon to execute Smash attacks. You can call your Pokémon near you by tapping B. Or hold B to release it at a distance.
While the Pokémon (smasher) is out, Trainer can't move. So be alert of your surroundings before using your specials.

(Sorry for the gen 1 bias, I miss Squirtle and Ivysaur. Aerodactyl is cool, and while 2nd gen, I want to see Pichu in as well).

Anyway. I support the Trainer. :)

Since Smash 5 was announced, and Transforming characters are now possible again, I have an idea for the Pokemon Trainer.
Instead of this Pokemon Trainer from Brawl:

My proposal is this Pokemon Trainer:

This allows Pokemon Trainer to keep his Pokemon switching (Ha! SWITCHing!) gimmick while still allowing Charizard to keep his upgraded status as a standalone character.
"But what about Ivysaur?", you might ask. My simple solution is that an alternate costume could be the middle forms of these Pokemon: Charmeleon, Ivysaur, and Wartortle. Smash is not exactly known for using Pokemon's canonical sizes, else Mewtwo would be twice Lucario's height, and Pikachu would be very, very tiny. Since the three middle evolutions are still small, it would not look weird in comparison.
Alternatively, we could return to Brawl's Pokemon Trainer, but I dislike the idea of downgrading Charizard by removing a special move, so perhaps Pokemon switching could be assigned to a taunt instead.
Either of these options are acceptable to me.

I would honestly be psyched if Pokemon Trainer was on the battlefield using items such as the Pokeflute or whatever. He can attack with his backpack, or do Safari stuff with rocks/mud. But... But, instead of starter Pokemon, he would have a Pichu companion. Two birds (Spearows), one stone.

Ultimately, a Pokemon summon sprite is the same as a rider. It is just naming it something differently. If they quick summon from the Balls or not, its not all that different.

I've always wanted the trainer to be emphasized using the primary tool in Pokemon, the Pokeball. With the trainer building heavily into strategy- weaken the opponents with Pokemon summons (or pager, in this case). Then have different ways of stalling the opponent to "capture" them with Pokeball. Almost like an entire mechanic based around Yoshi's egg capture, yet much more in depth.

Since Sm4sh, I always wanted the Pokemon Trainer Red to return but by himself. He could fight on his own by using stones/mud like in Safari Zone, throwing Pokeballs, pulling his bike out of his bag and so on. Besides, I want Squirtle & Ivysaur to return seperately (and Pichu aswell of course).

You can count me in on that supporters list if you're willing to create one.

I just thought about this, Blastoise was planned with Charizard, but scrapped for Squirtle. But with Blastoise being revealed for Pokken... Maybe?

Probably not, but it would be interesting.

Honestly- what I think will happen, is that Greninja will be cut, with Decidueye and Empoleon added.

Then as DLC down the line, I am really pulling for Eevee, to market that new evolution coming out.

I literally had a panic attack when I saw solozard confirmed. I'm sure you can find my terrified posts on here somewhere.

Btw is there already an Ivysaur for Switch thread?

With Greninja being popular, I dont think he'll be replaced and especially not by an old Gen Pokémon like Empoleon.

And I dont like the idea with Blastoise tbh, Squirtle just fits so much better.

Squirtle and Ivysaur were popular.
So was Mewtwo.

And yet they were all cut.

Pokemon is the only series to get a cut every game cuts were made. It's one of the few patterns that we have in Smash.

Empoleon has also cemented itself as the leader of the fourth gen starters. Getting into Pokken helped. Having a Piplup in the reboot of the movie cannon helped. And soon enough, rereleases of Diamond and Pearl, will help .

It's odd because Empoleon was always my least favorite one from D&P. Torterra is bae and Infernape's pretty cool but I always hated Empoleon's stupid trident beak lol

That's unfortunate.

As the only Pokemon named after Napoleon, I'm quite fond of him; though Squirtle is honestly my favorite still.
I really do not like Infernape. I am not a fan of the ridiculous number of Fire/Fighting starters. I mean why the hell did the developers think that was so smart?

I'd have felt like twice was okay- especially since gen 4 had a thing where the third stages of all three of them had a type advantage over the others. I really loved that. Gen 5 just **** the bed though tbh. Altogether with the starters, in general

I wish I knew why exactly the Trainer was cut in the first place. We would, of course, have a better idea on whether or not he was coming back if we knew this. People have said it had to do with the limitations on the 3DS, but can we actually confirm this? I also recall Sakurai mentioning that he appreciated cutting transformation characters so you could focus on perfecting a single move-set during the first Smash Direct. I will say that I'm worried...

I loved the inclusion of the Trainer in Brawl, and would love to see him again sans stamina mechanic (which isn't even something we see in Pokemon games). Battling with my three Pokemon felt like the closest I would ever get to an actual action Pokemon game in my life. Seeing as the Trainers (there should definitely be a gender swap option) are the actual protagonists of the games, they most certainly deserve a spot IMHO.

That said, I have to wonder if there's a near consensus on how people want the Trainer to be implemented? I'm definitely not down for the Trainers fighting themselves personally, as I just don't think this is how they would operate. I also think the use of anymore than three Pokemon would potentially be overkill. I feel using starter Pokemon is ideal as well, as they remain some of the most recognizable and iconic (in addition to the grass, fire, water trio being such a staple to the series) Mostly, I want him back to the way he was, but with different monsters in his pocket.

I know there are people that want Ivysaur and Squirtle back, and also want Charizard to remain his own character. Maybe we could go with Blastoise (which I know a lot of people want as well), Charmeleon, and Bulbasaur with Blastoise and Bulbasaur retaining a lot of Squirtle and Ivy's moveset?

Personally I would go with something completely different, which I think of as the "Pokemon Master". A trainer that has traveled the globe, and has all fully evolved pokemon? I would love the crap out of this. How about a Decidueye, Blaziken, and Samurott combination? The first two have a lot of fans, and then we would have Poke in smash from gen VII, V, and III which all have yet to have playable reps (and are pleasingly 2 generations apart from each other). They would need to bring back everyone including Pichu, and then we would have a freaking party amirite? Gen I-VII reps!

Anyway... those are just my thoughts. Take 'em or leave 'em. :rotfl:
