One thing Smash has been missing for the longest time is a true fighter to represent the horror genre. Sure, there are spirits based on Eternal Darkness and Resident Evil, an Assist Trophy from Fatal Frame and I GUESS you could say that Castlevania representation is horror based since it's all about vampires. But what if Smash had a fighter based on a true horror franchise. Some ideas could include-

-Pyramid Head (Silent Hill)
-Springtrap (Five Nights at Freddy's 3) (since the series just came out on Switch)
-Nemesis (Resident Evil)
-Issac Clarke (Dead Space)
-The Keeper (The Evil Within)

But this thread isn't about who could be the fighter. But instead the best way to announce them.

I'm sure Sakurai and the Smash team already know how excited people get about new announcements or how leaks are rampant. So how about we kill 2 birds with one cryptic stone? A video releases on the Nintendo YouTube Channel. It's weirdly eerie and doesn't seem to be related to any specific title at first glance. Almost muffled ambiance similar to the cutscenes of subspace emissary can be heard along with a black screen covered in static. All we see is a white Smash logo form as the footage begins to distort.

So who is the fighter? No one knows yet. The fighter isn't announced in the video. All that's announced is the confirmation of a new fighter and the fact they're from a horror game. Every week leading up to the eventually announcement there will be more similar cryptic videos that give very settle hints about who the fighter is but never being fully direct.

Let's say that it was a FNAF character as a random example. The second video could be a shot of the arcade Donkey Kong in a dark building. The machine turns on but the game seems to be glitching. The screen is the only thing lighting up the room. You can see a checkerboard floor being lit up slightly. 2 white eyes can be briefly seen in a single frame. It's a literal blink and you miss it moment.

What if it was Pyramid Head? The video would be of a first person perspective of a guy driving in a car. The road is covered in fog causing him to swerve off the road and crash, but the video goes to black right before the impact. As a reference to the first game which might throw people off as Pyramid Head didn't come until the second game. But that's the idea. Be vague so that it doesn't spoil the surprise but direct enough to give at least one hint in the right direction.

Maybe a BETTER idea would be giving hints using Smash Ultimate itself.
Moving on to another example, let's say it was Alice Liddell from Alice Madness Returns. It would be of Zelda in her blue alternate color falling from the top of the screen. The stage is Distant Planet. Zelda gets up as a the Black colored Incinaroar walks up and drops a saber item in front of Zelda. She slowly walks up to pick it up. Footage starts to distort and ends before she does. The entire time the footage almost looks as if it was recorded by an old fashioned camera from Alice's time era. In case you couldn't tell. Zelda was meant to be Alice, Distant Planet her Wonderland, Incenaroar as Cheshire Cat and the Saber item is the Vorpal Blade.

There will be approximately 5 videos released in the span of 5 weeks. The 6th being the announcement. Unless they wanted to have the number of videos go with the series the fighter is from. For example; it's called FIVE nights at Freddy's so there would only be 5 videos as the fighter would be announced at the 5th.

Essentially I'm saying that they could make a short ARG series as an experiment to announce the horror fighter. Depending on the response it could be an interesting way to introduce new fighters in the future. It could get people talking, always make the game relevant, video series would always be different as they would depend on the fighter and give sort of a mystery to solve which could lower leaks or interest in leaks as people would instead focus on trying to solve a puzzle by only being given some of the pieces each week. But what if a fighter is leaked anyway? Then mislead people. Give contradicting clues that still line up with the fighter but might make people think it's someone else. But I guess that more depends on how soon the videos themselves are made and how much work gets put into them.

So what do you think? Could this be the best way to announce of horror fighter? Or even future fighters in general.
