5) If they wanted to represent alolan forms as a form of advertisement for Sun and Moon(and the ultra retellings) then a having a recognizable Pokemon and an alolan echo is a great way of showing off the concept to those not in the know.
If only... if only... but it’s clearly not happening. Meowth is still a Pokeball Pokémon.

Meowth as unique newcomer and Alolan Meowth as Echo Fighter would have been perfect!

I predict we are getting Incineroar (Vergeben said Decidueye is not in) and Mega Charizard X as an Echo Fighter of Charizard (replacing the solo Charizard in SSB4).

What good will that do if there's no one to see it? It's one wicked beautiful Team Rocket pic *_*

I don't wanna be Ash Ketchum here, but our plan ain't gonna work without a proper audience.

We're cashing in our gold coins when we haven't even won yet. There's absolutely nothing to celebrate here.

If we can't expand our operations on Twitter, IGN, Serebi (did I spell it right?) then Meowth will be a running gag just like the anime! And Team Rocket will end up in AHA jail! Everyone will be pointing, laughing and spitting in our faces.

I posted that picture on Twitter. It got 2 likes. It’s not much but it’s a start.

What about all your other buddies on here? You've shown great sportsmanship and like I said, people like ya a lot on here.

It's not fair!!! We're gonna end up in AHA jail with that bully Nelson laughing at us!

Is there anyone out there who can throw Team Rocket a few gold bars??

You know it just dawned on me. Some time ago, there was a poll held in Japan, which was a general top 100 Pokémon Election. I'm uncertain of the sample size or how the poll it self was conducted but here are the results:

Here we can actually see our favorite feline right here, IN THE TOP 100, the scratch cat's standing is 82 and that's pretty impressive considering there's over 700 Pokémon. Are there any supporters here who are Japanese or speak it fluently? Getting support in the east would greatly help Meowth's chances, I personally feel Meowth couldn't possibly make it base game, unless Sakurai pulls a Sakurai and Meowth actually does make it base game. However, DLC is a viable option as it seems like Smash Ult. is definitely going to see some long running support.

From what I can see... there are 24 Pokémon from the 1st Gen. Meowth appears to be the 19th most popular 1st Gen Pokémon in 2016.

  1. :151: #3 - Mew
  2. :025: #4 - Pikachu
  3. :006: #9 - Charizard
  4. :150: #11 - Mewtwo
  5. :133: #12 - Eevee
  6. :081: #24 - Magnemite
  7. :094: #35 - Gengar
  8. :039: #49 - Jigglypuff

  19. :052: #82 - Meowth
  20. :001: #89 - Bulbasaur

  22. :136: #95 - Flareon
  23. :137: #96 - Porygon
  24. :068: #99 - Machamp

Based on this, the most popular 1st Gen Pokémon with the proper body type suited for Smash would be... Gengar. I mean, yeah, it's a cool Pokémon... so I understand why it would be that popular.

Which is why I feel a jump start in Japan would probably put him on the radar for Smash. Japan loves cute things, especially cute cats, not to mention Meowth still has good standing concerning relevancy due to its appearance in the anime. Its also one of the Pokemon that has some considerable merch for it. For Smash Ultimate, if it had to see a Pokemon rep base game, I could see Gardevoir (the leaks that its popped up in don't seem too credible, however its still a popular gen 3 mon, the project plan was finished in 2015 and the Smash team may have just went with it sense OR/AS was what was recent around then) or Decidueye/Incinaroar (might be a greninja situation as the project plan was finished in 2015 meaning that Sun and Moon weren't even a thought unless GameFreak decided to give the team reference sheets again). Obviously right now for the Smash team, focus is on getting the base game finished, but for DLC at least, there needs to be a jump start for Meowth so the Scratch Cat can finally get a chance. I'm not even sure how to start however. I wouldn't want to resort to memes but maybe that could be a feasible way to get Meowth in, as memes spread like wild fire, see Waluigi.

No matter how you slice it there's a lot of work to be done.

How have all these other characters like Ridley, Waluigi, etc got noticed?

(you guys may not always like what I have to say but it has some merit)

Hardly any of our Meowth/Team Rocket guys have the skills to network, no swagger and not enough tech "know how" to produce quality content.

Twitter, popular gaming sites like IGN, that Pokemon site Serebii and producing quality content on Youtube are what's required to get a huge following.
(I've said it a million times)

If we don't have the skills for that then we gotta bargain or compromise so we'd get what we need.

Memes?

Well, we can always search for existing gifs that feature Meowth and/or Team Rocket and save them for later use.

I found this gif. We could use it to illustrate how Meowth's Forward Air move might look like. It looks like Meowth would scratch the opponent two times in a row.

Yeah like that. We need to show what Meowth CAN DO in order for people to be sold on the idea.

Also that Giovanni meme with Meowth on his lap should've warmed Sakurai's heart with his face pasted on it.

We should keep promoting the concept two ways, as Meowth and the other, Team Rocket. People may not like one of the ideas so it's best if both are pushed out there just to be safe.

Guys tell your friends, family, coworkers, anybody to vote for Meowth!

We need all the votes we can get even if they don't play Smash Bros!

ALERT!!! He changed the rules!
Your vote won't count unless you read the new rules he made.

You have to put it all in a summary from your own comment under "Nominate a Character"

Again please read the rules and make sure whoever you tell that they need to do the same!

Calling all confirmed and suspected Meowth supporters!

I can't believe I am now finding out about this Twitter hashtag #TeamRocketTakeover

Granted the tweet is old (April 1, 2018)… nevertheless we can still use it to demand a Team Rocket Takeover in Smash and request for Meowth or any of the following Team Rocket combinations as a playable fighter.
  1. :052: (could come with Alolan Meowth as Echo Fighter)
  2. :052::023::109:
  3. :052::024::110:
  4. :052::024::110::202:
  5. :052::202:

Use the hashtag #TeamRocketTakeover to let Sakurai know you want to play as Meowth or Team Rocket in Smash Bros. It is probably best used whenever Sakurai mentions Smash or Pokémon.

Use the hashtag #TeamRocketTakeover when replying and/or retweeting people who express an interest in playing as Meowth and/or Team Rocket in Smash.

Use the hashtag #TeamRocketTakeover to let Nintendo and Pokémon Company (including Satoshi Tajiri and Junichi Masuda) to let them know you want Meowth and Team Rocket (Jessie, James, and Meowth) to appear in more games after Pokémon Let's Go Pikachu/Eevee. It is probably best used whenever Nintendo and Pokémon Company mention Pokémon games, Team Rocket, and/or Meowth.

Use the hashtag #TeamRocketTakeover to let Nintendo and Pokémon Company know you want Meowth to finally have his own game(s) like Meowth's Party and Pokémon Let's Go Meowth. Something like this would be nice.

Pokemon Team Rocket Edition.jpg

We now have a situation where Team Rocket from the anime finally came back to the games after their last video game appearance 18 years ago (Pokémon Puzzle League). I believe this is our golden opportunity and we have to seize it!

I plan to show my support to Pokémon Let's Go Pikachu/Eevee by getting both versions. We need to convince Pokémon Company to put Jessie, James, and Meowth in more Pokémon games. If Team Rocket & Meowth are in more games, they will be relevant in the games in addition to the anime and they will stay recent in the games in addition to the anime. And if Team Rocket & Meowth are relevant and recent in the games in addition to the anime, Smash fans will take notice and hopefully more of them will support them... and hopefully they will be more open to the idea of Team Rocket Meowth as a playable fighter.

Remember Sakurai's "no anime characters" comment? I believe that comment really hurt Meowth's support base because Team Rocket Meowth is from the anime. I insist that it doesn't matter if Team Rocket Meowth is from the anime since he is still owned by Pokémon Company and Nintendo unlike Goku from DragonBall Z. Let's just face it, Meowth is likely famous not because of the games but because of the anime. That's why I started supporting Meowth for Smash 2 (aka Melee) in the first place 19 years ago.

We must demand a Team Rocket Takeover in the games and I believe the hashtag #TeamRocketTakeover is the key.

If Team Rocket Meowth is famous because of the anime, then we must make Team Rocket Meowth famous because of the games too. That's why I believe we ought to use the hashtag #TeamRocketTakeover to demand Pokémon Company to put Jessie, James, and Meowth in more games.

We also might need to vote with our money and buy Meowth and Team Rocket merchandise. I have a Meowth plush (and a Toad plush) and an Alolan Meowth figure in Great Ball (RIP Toys R Us). I am also saving up to purchase Meowth and Team Rocket T-shirts so I can wear them and show my support in public (some of you could even wear those T-shirts to show support at Smash tournaments).

I plan to use the hashtag #TeamRocketTakeover in addition to my hashtag #OperationPayDay (been using it since E3 2018). It's named like that because Pay Day is Meowth's signature move and because the day Meowth is finally confirmed to be a playable fighter in Smash will be known as Meowth's Pay Day.

I know that it is far too late for Meowth to be a playable fighter in Smash Ultimate but we cannot let this defeat us. Ridley fans and King K. Rool fans proved that if they can unite together, not falter, not give up, and continue supporting them for 15+ years, their efforts will eventually pay off. Look at King K. Rool! He was not relevant in the games for almost 20 years and his last major appearance was in a Mario sports spin-off game 10 years ago, and worst of all, Nintendo actually thought King K. Rool was not popular! But his dedicated fans proved Nintendo wrong and they were finally and justly rewarded.

Can we prove Pokémon Company wrong? Only time will tell but I do know that as of 2016, Meowth was the 82nd most popular Pokémon. That's not so bad considering there were about 700 Pokémon at the time. With the 7th gen Pokemon and eventually the 8th gen Pokémon in the mix, it's hard to tell if Meowth will stay in the Top 100 but we must continue supporting Meowth nevertheless.

Until then... keep your eyes on the gold.

Let's not forget that you can also support Meowth/Team Rocket by calling or emailing Nintendo directly.

Anytime you are at a Gamestop/gaming related event or hangout make sure you mention us and what we're trying to achieve here.

Arc, I think your Captain Toad buddies need to return the favor, their lil mushroom man is blowin up right now! You've been very vocal and supportive with their campaign, I think it's time they do the same.

This seems like a good idea. I have no money so I can't really buy merch (The only characters I have merch for in characters I support is Don chan and Jibanyan and it was a special occasion, all way before Smash Ultimate and I have plenty more character I support than that) but IMO too much begging could lead into the Waluigi, Ashley, and Shovel Knight fanbase territory. I would personally thank Sakurai for making Meowth, the Pokeball item look really good in Ultimate then wish he can be a character next time while mentioning Pokemon Company like the Krystal supporters (such as me) did. Afterall, Sakurai worked his best to make everyone, including Meowth look great. Also what if the TeamrocketTakedown hashtag is no longer used by the Pokemon Co.? THere won't be any point across. Then again, it looks like an annual April Fool's thing so it could still be used.

If the Captain Toad support thread is “blowing up right now”, it’s because I told them to never shut up about Toad.

We need to continue talking about Meowth. We must never shut up about Meowth. We must do our best to keep this support thread on the first page everyday even if we add nothing to the Smash discussion.

We just talk about Meowth, Team Rocket, the anime, the games, the merchandise, and create our own memes (doesn’t matter if they were made on MS Paint) and share them here and share ideas how to make our memes better and post them on social media like Twitter and Facebook and YouTube. In other words, have fun!

Anyone think Sakurai would make a new ballot for DLC in Ultimate? Gather as many people and rush down the ballot with Meowth. SOunds like the perfect idea.

How are we gonna do that? More people need to be more proactive in order for that to work, these other threads have hordes of supporters.

I was referring to the ballot. Last night when I looked, Captain Toad made the top 5!

Here we can actually see our favorite feline right here, IN THE TOP 100, the scratch cat's standing is 82 and that's pretty impressive considering there's over 700 Pokémon. I bring this up because this shows there are quite a few fans in Japan who like Meowth, and I think a good course of action would be trying to get some spark going on for Meowth in Japan.
Hmm... that's a good idea. We could try reaching out to Japanese fans on Twitter by using the Japanese language.

What relevant Japanese words do we know so far?

Characters (I copy pasted them from Bulbapedia)
  • Meowth ニャース
  • Team Rocket ロケット団
  • Jessie ムサシ
  • James コジロウ
  • Ekans アーボ

What other relevant words do we need?

Maybe we need to strike a deal with some Youtubers.
Some that can get thousands of views on Youtube and followers on Twitter.

Would you guys be down for that? If we cut a deal with some on Patreon and they'll return the favor?

I do watch someone who's fluent in three languages, maybe he can help.

IMO Meowth is just as iconic as Pokemon like Charizard or Jigglypuff who are also playable in the SSB series and have had notable specimen in the anime (Ash's Charizard, the JIgglypuff that followed Ash and Friends for years).

I can say with clear resolution, and no backing (other than media and the prominence of the anime), that Meowth is more iconic than Jigglypuff, and probably more iconic than Charizard. Id say the only more known Pokemon is Pikachu.

But the Smash fanbase, being more 'hard core' about Nintendo (and generally slightly older on the forums), is in direct opposition to the Pokemon franchise. There is a reason the Smash fanbase as a whole batted no eye to the exclusion of two Pokemon veteran characters more iconic than half the roster (well, Ivysaur isnt Bulbasaur, but it works as a substitution). Those were two fully unique veterans that were not even acknowledged in places where PICHU was referenced.

The bottom line is that the Smash fanbase doesnt consider pokemon the way the Pokemon fans do (even though there is of course overlap to some degree, both being enormous franchises). Pokemon representation isnt complete without Meowth.

It's been 20 years since I first saw the Pokémon anime and became a fan of Team Rocket, especially Meowth!

WaddleKing WaddleKing Did you see that? Team Rocket is all over that event.

Meowth is not associated with Team Rocket in the video games except for Pokémon Yellow, Pokémon Puzzle League, and Pokémon Let's Go Pikachu/Eevee… and yet normies associate Meowth with Team Rocket because of the anime.

I truly believe that if Meowth ever gets in Smash as a playable fighter, it wouldn't be a generic Meowth… it would be Team Rocket Meowth. Team Rocket Meowth would get more attention and hype than a generic Meowth ever would.

It also warms my heart to see children flocking to Meowth for once. Stupid Pikachu hogging all the attention.

Given how heavily the Pokemon anime is marketed so much that it easily overshadows the games, it always baffled me that Meowth. the only pokemon who's been in the anime nearly as long as Pikachu, who has a huge personality that most pokemon lack, isn't nearly as much of a poster boy for the Pokemon series as Pikachu or Charizard, or whatever current generation pokemon TPC feels like pushing.

I want to add onto that, Meowth also appeared in Pokemon Channel (not sure if counts but same one from Team Rocket) and when Meowth appeared in games like Pokepark, Snap and etc it had its voice actors from the anime. There was a Meowth event from BW2 giving out the Team Rocket one.
But perhaps most interesting of all that I just learned today, one in the latest main series game in fact. There was a Meowth statue in USUM, and can be found inside of Rainbow Rocket's base.

Alongside the fact he's in a ton of other games in general when other Mons from the same gen are few of in those such as this one https://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Dancing?_Pokémon_Band he's similar to the likes of Pikachu and Jigglypuff, an icon. At the very least to the same level as Jigglypuff, and in my opinion above.

WaddleKing WaddleKing I noticed that the only playable Pokémon in that Dancing Pokémon Band game are 6th gen Pokemon and Pikachu, Meowth, Mewtwo, and Wobbuffet. I expected Pikachu and sometimes Mewtwo... but Meowth AND Wobbuffet? Hmm... that’s a little surprising.

I’m hoping that Pokémon spin-off games will feature Meowth as a playable character more often. It was disappointing when Meowth was cut from Pokémon Mystery Dungeon games. That’s why I didn’t get Super Mystery Dungeon out of spite... same with why I’m not getting Super Mario Party out of spite due to lack of playable Toad. I’m not very willing to spend my money on spin-off games without playable Meowth or Toad.

So there are Meowth statues at Team Rocket headquarters in Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon. Interesting. I wonder if Game Freak or The Pokemon Company is trying to make Team Rocket Meowth canon in the main Pokémon games? And now we will see Team Rocket Meowth in Pokemon Let’s Go... admittedly it’s probably because they are remakes of Pokémon Yellow. But I hope to see Team Rocket Meowth in more games after Pokémon Let’s Go.

If anyone deserves to be a canon immigrant, it’s Jessie, James, and Meowth (and Wobbuffet).

Read around a bit more and found out it's also more of a reference to the Persian Statues in Pokemon GS, however, Persian was also associated with Team Rocket and especially Giovanni thanks to the anime much in the same vein as Meowth, and had appearances in some games. Not to mention they are related, so I think it doesn't change anything.
Oh they removed Toad? Strange, though I felt he also worked quite well as a host type of character and he's playable in a lot of other spin-offs and some main series. However with the introduction of a Toad who's distinguished himself far enough that being Captain Toad, I think they could have just added him instead at least.
As for Meowth, it was kind of showing when they made him a partner only in Sky, then eventually got rid of him since Gates, but then even brought back Riolu but not Meowth. At least there was Meowth Theater but that was short lived. And also Meowth was one of the better racers in Pokemon Dash, if not the best one in Regular GP.

I think one huge missed chance to include Meowth was in Detective Pikachu, he'd have been perfect considering the talking Pokemon motif.

I just bought this today btw, relevant because :052:.

Saw your post on Smash Ultimate Discussion.

Ash is getting an Eevee in the anime. My money is going back to Eevee.
What? 20 years later and Ash finally gets an Eevee? I am positive they are doing this to promote Pokémon Let's Go.

Wish they would bring back Arbok and Weezing to promote Pokémon Let's Go too... I mean, why not? They brought back Brock and Misty and I think they even brought back Jigglypuff.

Of course it is to promote Let's Go.
That's for all the anime was ever created, to sell the toys and games.
I truly think the best promotional characters for this past and next generations are Team Rocket and Eevee.
Not to mention, Pokemon being the most difficult series to predict, this would also serve as a shock to many people.

I believe they were last released in A Poached Ego which was some of the first few episodes of the Hoenn anime, so they should still be in Hoenn somewhere? Though they could bring them back in Kanto somehow, with a flock of Ekans, Arbok, Koffing and Weezing at their disposal. I do wish they'd give them more of a direct callback, there's been nods to them (Jessie had an Arbok flute, an Arbok bed and there were Ekans, Koffing and Meowth fishing rod hooks) but otherwise no direct callback or much of a direct flashback to them.
I did enjoy the episode though and I remember watching it when I was young on TV, I just don't like how in reality it was done so they could get some new Pokemon in focus over them for their team, but most especially the little amount of callbacks to them. That episode was pretty memorable to me.

Money on Mega Evolutions bringing them back.
Fun story- I left the anime after the episode they were released. So as they said goodbye to their best friends, I, too, became an adult.
It was around the bar mitzvah age. I think I watched it after a friends' BM, actually.
(I still have only to this day seen through the diamond and pearl saga. Eventually I'll background binge watch the last 6 seasons. I need to catch up for the return to Kanto).

To bring life in this thread, they released a children song on the Japanese Pokemon website of none other than our favourite scratch chat, Meowth.
https://www.pokemon.jp/look/daisuki_movie/detail/16306.html

Otherwise, I've noticed Isabelle kind of has moves that could be similar to things Meowth could use, obviously with different items but I mean like the way she uses "rockets", a balloon recovery (like the air balloon) and just her general amount of item usages in her disposal, not to mention they're both small bipedal animals.
Now why am I comparing them? Simply just to see which current Smash fighter would be most similar to Meowth (So I can imagine myself playing him, it's the closest we got!), at least for mods, our main goal is to get people more aware of the idea of Meowth as a concept for Smash and how and why he would stand out, right?
If someone per say made a Meowth Isabelle mod but gave them Team Rocket rockets, Meowth/Team Rocket themed items and so on, that would for sure open the idea to a wider audience who would go onto spread it on if they're able to see how unique and how much he really could stand out, granted through a placeholder but we want the Smash audience to even be aware of this idea. And not just the often glanced "Lame" and "No one wants him" towards it when whatever latest gen starter or other Pokemon TPC feels like pushing catches people's attention, so he could be viewed more as a side runner, like he always has for me.

Maybe I'm just overthinking too far into the future, but man I'd play her a lot if someone made one.
Edit: heck

Hey... that's a good idea!

What might help with "relevancy" and "recency" since apparently they matter to some people: :109: *cough* Sakurai and detractors *cough* :110:
  • Team Rocket (Jessie, James, and Meowth) need to appear in more Pokémon games after Pokémon Let's Go Pikachu/Eevee
  • Meowth needs a Baby Meowth pre-evolution and a Mega Persian evolution
  • Arbok and Weezing both need Mega evolutions
  • Arbok and Weezing both need to come back to the anime
I think they might help change people's perceptions on Meowth and Team Rocket and they might start supporting them for Smash.

Arbok and Weezing need an excuse plot to come back to the anime... and Mega Evolutions might be it. And hey, they could double as Team Rocket's Final Smash! Let's hope Gen 8 does this.

EDIT: I just saw this on Twitter!

Apparently :118: is in Smash as a Pokeball Pokémon instead of :129: because Sakurai likes Goldeen's voice from the anime. Okay, fine. Goldeen can be the useless Pokeball Pokémon in Smash but at least make Magikarp the Cucco of Pokeball Pokémon. If you hit Magikarp, it evolves into Gyarados.

Does Sakurai like Team Rocket's and Meowth's voices from the anime?

I don't believe that about Goldeen. I cannot fathom it was not a factor that Goldeen was a Pokemon featured by a leading Pokemon character, much less that Goldeen was often summoned in the anime as useless out of Water. (I always wanted Goldeen to be made to be quite fantastic in the Smash game if summoned in water). I wonder if Sakurai has to be particularly cautious when discussing Pokemon topics in Smash. The Pokemon Company is notoriously a difficult (tight lipped and brand sealed) series, even for Nintendo.

As for Meowth... one of five leading characters in one of the top three longest cartoons in the US (and other statistics on the show), not to mention the rise of the Rockets in the recent games AND next game... he is the most relevant Pokemon of the current times.

This is why I feel strongly about taking advantage of this golden opportunity!

Let's see what we have so far:
  • Team Rocket (organization) finally came back after 8 years hiatus (HeartGold/SoulSilver) or after 19 years hiatus (Gold/Silver, if you don't want to count remakes) in Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon
  • Team Rocket (Jessie, James, and Meowth) finally came back to the video games after 18 years hiatus (Pokémon Puzzle League) or 20 years hiatus (Pokémon Yellow, if you don't want to count spin-offs) in Pokémon Let's Go Pikachu/Eevee
  • Meowth and Persian got new Alolan Forms in Sun/Moon
  • you can dress your avatar in Team Rocket uniform in Pokémon GO

I hope Meowth and Team Rocket, especially Jessie and James, will make their resumes bigger after Pokémon Let's Go. They not only need to become relevant but stay relevant. They need to stay relevant after Pokémon Let's Go.

I plan to get both Pokémon Let's Go Pikachu/Eevee. If you plan to get only one version, get the Eevee version and let Nintendo know on social media that the main reason you got the Eevee version is because you want Meowth on your team. I am also asking Nintendo on social media to make Pokémon Let's Go Meowth where you play as Jessie (female trainers) or James (male trainers) with Meowth as your partner Pokémon. The goal is to convince Nintendo to keep Meowth and Team Rocket, especially Jessie and James, relevant in the video games.

It worked with Toad. Toad fans saw an opening in New Super Mario Bros. Wii... and they seized it. Sure, it has been almost 10 years since Toad finally became a playable character in a main Mario game again but the thing is... Toad and now Toadette are playable in new and upcoming main Mario games... and now Toad finally got his own game again with Captain Toad. Toad fans are still fighting but at least they got Nintendo to build up a big resume for Toad and now Toadette. Whenever I was filling out Nintendo.com surveys about main Mario games, I told them that the main reason I got the games was because I can play as Toad.

That's why I see Pokémon Let's Go Pikachu/Eevee as a golden opportunity... Meowth fans and Team Rocket (Jessie & James) fans finally have an opening and now we need to seize it!
