Riddles :ultrichter: 2-0s Mew2King :ultbowser::ultincineroar:, eliminating him at 33rd place.
SaltOne :ultcloud: 2-0s LingLing :ultpeach:

SaltOne looked so clean the second game, he was making Cloud look like a top tier with his insane coverage and shield pressure.

ESAM :ultpikachu: 3-2 Raffi-X :ultrob:; I'm surprised by how close it was given that Pikachu doesn't exactly give R.O.B. the easiest time.

Jay :ultmetaknight: 3-2s Myran :ultolimar: to eliminate him at 25th place; that last game was so tense.

EDIT: Lemmon :ultjoker: 3-0s Aikota :ultgunner::ultzelda: to eliminate him at 25th place.

Raffi's static doubles partner is a Pikachu main, so he does have a lot of experience in the matchup.

Interesting, given Jayy used PT most of the time.
Maybe it's a secretly good MU for MK (I wouldn't have expected that)

Raffi-X :ultrob: 3-0s Jay :ultmetaknight::ultpokemontrainer:, eliminating him at 17th place.
Samsora :ultpeach: 3-2s Bestness:ultness:, another very close set; Ness players were quick to make me eat my words lol But for reals, though, major props to Bestness for performing this well.

WaDi :ultrob:3-1 Scatt :ultsnake::ultmegaman:

With this, the last Snake rep gets eliminated with none making top 16.

I am not going to say Snake isnt super ridiculous becuase he is. But it seems that lots of players are starting to learn his game this season

I'd say it's mostly because of Ally not competing anymore.
He was by far the strongest Snake.

Holy crap BestNess vs. Samsora was so tight.

That comeback in Game 4 was insane, pity he couldn't pull it off in Game 5.

Myran's defeat to a "Nothing personnel kid" made me feel all kinds of twisted emotions, thought he had it in the bag.

With Lemmon:ultjoker: 17th placing, this is now the highest a solo Joker player has reached in a big tournament that isn't MkLeo. Props to him.

Lui$ :ultmario: 3-1s WaDi :ultrob::ultwiifittrainerm:, eliminating him at 17th place; WFT seemed to put in work game 3. Also glad to see Lui$ pull through, but it's a little disheartening to see that he chose to use even OG Mario over Doc.

Maister :ultgnw: 3-0s kept :ultvillager::ultisabelle:, ending his very impressive run at 13th place.
The simple fact that :ultgnw:'s Bucket now reflects projectiles singlehandely makes the Villy matchup 5x easier for him.

Also, Light:ultfox: 3-1 BlazingPasta:ultpeach: to end his impressive run at 13th place.

MKLeo :ultjoker: 3-2s zackray :ultrob::ultwolf:

These were some of the best games I've seen; such a heartbreaking end for zackray, though, you really feel for him.

Really was down to the wire! I was like "Where was THIS :ultrob: @ EVO?"

Hard to see that breakdown too, but even that's a learning experience. But today's Zackray was nothing like the one I saw at EVO. EVO Zackray lost his composure during the game. This Zackray brought MKLeo to the brink. The kid's on a new level, and hopefully he realizes this.

Looks like he'll have to confront his second demon in Losers.

Id say this had been a pretty good showing for R.O.B this tournament. I think he is a upper-high tier. Yeah his disavantage is still pretty bad..but when you have zoning and advantage that effective.

I am just amazed Arm-Rotor has been untouched all this time. That move is legit bonkers

Weeeeellllll.... damn.

Lui$ :ultfox: 3-1s shuton :ultolimar: to get into Top 8, eliminating shuton at 9th place. Major props to Lui$ getting so far, he earned that pop-off; this tournament is looking great for Fox.

Man...poor Zackray just kinda fell apart there vs Light.
He was obviously shaken bad from his loss to MKLeo

This tournament is so emotional for me, even as a spectator. Glad to see 2 Fox :ultfox: in top 8, but the sets with Zackray were so heartbreaking. Not the best tournament for Japanese. Also while I don't like Olimar :ultolimar: / Alph :ultalph:, the set with Lui$ vs Shuton clearly shows the flaws of Olimar's new shield. Please Nintendo, do something about it.

Diversity continues to win out. 9 different characters in top 8 and only two repeats (fox, zss)

Note that 4.0.0 did not fix Olimar's sheild in the 4.0.0 Patch but instead gave a buff to Purple Pikmin F-Smash.

I think at this point it can be considered a deliberate change...like their current vision for Olimar to be a very powerful yet very frail glass cannon.

I don't say that Olimar shouldn't be pressured but there are probably other ways to make that work (don't ask me which, I'm just theorizing), not make his hurtbox larger with shield staying unchanged

True, there are a lot of individual characters, but they are the same ones we always see in top 8s now. Nothing crazy like a Ridley or K rool or something. So it's...somewhat diverse.

:ultgnw: is a character we have seen in top 8 at Majors often?. Also we had a :ultvillager: and :ultrichter: make top 16 at an S-Ranked event. Which is somewhat suprising itself

It's not too surprising to see G&W considering who is playing him. With the exception of Genesis 6, SnS5 and EVO 2019, Maister has Top 8'd every tournament he's been to for Ultimate, and he has beat ESAM twice before in bracket.

Maister is the exception, but even he is a frequentl flier now into top 8s. I don't really pay attention to top 16 tbh but that's just me.

But I do feel we always see Joker, peach, zss, Pokemon trainer, olimar always in top 8. Sure, they all have one respective main, but it is the same repetition of characters. Which doesn't scream total diversity to me. Just halfway there. Can't remember the last ultimate major in which an actual uncommon character appeared not named game and watch, Luigi, or duck hunt thanks to their specialists (Maister, elegant,Raito).

But at least it's not like brawl mk or smash 4 Bayo so...

I dont agree with discounting specialists. But does Albion count? That had a ness and a browser jr in top 8.

I hope Tweek switches off PT if he gets downloaded by Leo again like at Evo he lost 6 games in a row. A big part of Tweek's strength as a competitor is his versatility in characters.

Albion 4 isn’t going to be as widely talked about, since it’s noticeably less stacked than tournaments like Genesis and EVO as far as we know. Countries like Europe, Australia, and Japan are bound to have a more diverse roster since they generally have different playstyles and the competition isn’t as heavy there. Nevertheless the :ultlarry: victory was a definite milestone since we now can take note of his significant caveats instead of rely on the early meta assumptions of stereotypical low tiers. But aside from that top 8 had your predicted top-tier list. If we analyzed the bracket there even further you get obscure characters like :ultpiranha::ultpit::ultkirby:. For every tournament outside the States, you can usually count on somebody from other countries to bust out the character that’s getting the spit.

So, Albion would be a definite candidate to consider, but not as much as heavier competitions like Frostbite or Genesis.

Yeah I know it wasnt stacked but I do feel like Europe gets an unnecessarily bad rap. A lot of their players that make it to the states do well.
I'm not sure I agree on Japan though. I think their top 100 is only a half step behind the USs.

Still I'm splitting hairs. Completely get your point.

Maister:ultgnw: 3-0 Light:ultfox:
I... did not expect this. He is now guaranteed 5th place at an S tier tournament. Maister might get top 20 in the next PGR at this rate.

Lui$:ultfox::ultfalco: 1-3 Nairo:ultpalutena::ultjoker:
After losing game 1, it seems like Nairo's Joker that he has been training for some streams is starting to pay off, although I do think he could've still won if he stayed with Palutena.

Edit: Oh wait. Nairo went Joker game 1, then whopped him with Palutena. my B

Light oddly made a lot of repeated mistakes during the match, particularly the "hopping into charged up smashes" and "empty hopping at the ledge when GnW can get-up with NAir". Still, major props to Maister getting this far into an S-Tier event the fanboy in me is TRYING to remain calm right now.

On a side note, I definitely think we should take note of the top 16 or even top 32, especially in tournaments as big as these. The fact that Riddles :ultrichter: :ultken: only got 13th yet defeated Dabuz, Wishes, and Pandarian (and on top of that, also nearly bringing MKLeo to his knees), really makes you think about the kind of talent that's up there.

It's not too surprising to see G&W considering who is playing him. With the exception of Genesis 6, SnS5 and EVO 2019, Maister has Top 8'd every tournament he's been to for Ultimate, and he has beat ESAM twice before in bracket.
I think it can be seen both ways; on one hand, Maister has done really well for the most part during his Smash Ultimate career; that said, most of his successes beforehand barring Smash Factor 8 (and EVO) were only at smaller scale tournaments, and as for the two other S Tier events he attended prior, he didn't do very well at either overall.
