Tourney submission:
Under the Super Happy Tree

Fighters:
Yoshi alone

Stages:
Crafted World
Super Happy Tree
Yoshi's Island Brawl
Yoshi's Story Melee
Woolly World (I can't remember if we brought that one back, so here it is just in case)

Items:
Food
Super Leaf (very rare)
Super Spicy Curry (extremely rare)
I think this one is justified because Yoshis are a species and therefore it makes canonical sense for there to be tons of him.

I know it's still quite a bit early but I do want us to get to our next submission period but, before that, I want to do a discussion round before hand. This is because we are jumping into our second fighter for our Season 2 DLC. I don't think it requires a lot of discussion but, of the time I had planned to start the submissions period, I will be busy so I can't explain it in detail so I will be doing it in this post and then indicate, qui9ckly, when we are starting the submission round. TLDR, we are ending this early and jumping into discussion as I don't have a lot of time today to formally start us on submissions.

Job 285:
Will Smith
View attachment 349733
That's right! Will Smith is an American actor, Rapper and film producer who is famous for his roles in movies like Men in Black, Aladdin and even Suicide Squad. He was born in Philadelphia and he grew up also in it.
Will Smith has received a lot of accolades and awards, making him very famous celebrity.

Will Smith has a lot of potential because of memes, like "It's rewind time" or even the recent and Infamous "Will slaps Chris rock" Meme that occurred on Oscar awards in this year (2022).

Typical example of Smash commercial with Will Smith:
As himself appearing in Commercial, he would play a Smash Infinite with Season 1 DLC Cast and he tries to win a game (Assume that he mains Agumon and Agumon watches Smith playing him and sits next to Smith), but Sakura uses her Final Smash and knocks out Phoenixnand Will laughs while Phoenix grunts with anger. Sakura celebrates the defeat of Phoenix, but Agumon (in game) uses attack combo and defeats Sakura, worried about losing in a game.
Then there is a duel between Zagreus and Agumon in game and Agumon cheers Will to win the match and Will grabbed the Smash ball and he used Final Smash on Zagreus, defeating him, winning the match. After the match, Agumon and Will exchange the hi-5 and they both giggle with smirk, ending the commercial.

And my tourney submission:
Fire Emblem Clash!

Theme: It's themed after Fire Emblem franchise.

Fighters: All Fire Emblem fighters
Stages: All Fire Emblem ones.
Items: Breidabliks, Assist Trophies based on FE and Smash Ball.

BTS
I dunno anything about Kpop I just think this would be funny.
Job 285:
View attachment 349727
Chris Pratt:
To promote the IRL-upcoming Super Mario Bros movie, as well as Smash Infinite, Nintendo hired the main actor of the movie, Chris Pratt to sire the commercial. Other cameos could include Charlie Day, Jack Black, and Seth Rogan, but Chris Pratt would be the main attraction.

Job 286:
Painting the Town

This is our Splatoon tournament!

Fighters: Inkling, Octoling, DJ Octavio
Stages: Moray Towers, Deepsea Metro
Assist Trophies: Squid Sisters
Items: Rainmaker
Somehow, both of your submissions are the worst things you've ever submitted.

Submission: Jack Black

Toby Maguire as Bully Maguire

Encapsulating the edginess of the 2000’s era of commercialism, Toby Maguire puts on his own set of bullying clothes and struts into a living room. He looks at a picture of Mario and says “I’m going to put some dirt in your eye”. He then sits down and picks up a game of Smash; picking Zagreus as befitting of his rebellious nature. He’s of course playing online and proceeds to belittle in typically Bully McGuire fashion as the beat the opponent but not as decisively as it appears (winning but with one stock left, etc). He then turns to the camera, moves his hair in dramatic fashion and says “Meet you in Smash.”
I do think that Gryf made a good point about the Nostalgia Critic - his most viewed video only has 5.2M views, he's not exactly that big a celebrity. So I will be removing him...

However, I do have a backup in mind, still from the formative years of YouTube...

With 78M views on his most popular non-crossover release...

Hey, it's FЯED! (Portayed by Lucas Cruikshank)

I was thinking ALF to continue a sort of puppet theme, but 1. his actor is dead, and 2. I don't think the audience we're aiming for has any ALF nostalgia
Paul Rudd

A celebrity now known mainly for portraying ant-man

Also he was in a nintendo commercial at some point

Battle for Hyrule
Fighters: All LoZ characters
Stages: All LoZ stages
Items and ATs: All LoZ content
Resubbing Under the Super Happy Tree

I think this one is justified because Yoshis are a species and therefore it makes canonical sense for there to be tons of him.
Job 285:

Mike Tyson

Punch Out tie in is obvious, feels like a solid choice due to that
Job 285

Tom Holland

View attachment 349784

One of the rising stars in Hollywood thanks to his work on the Spiderman films and was in the Uncharted movie. I believe there was some Uncharted content with Ratchet and Clank so Mr. Holland would be a perfect tie in for sure (even though this is for Season 1).
Here are our submissions...

Celebrity for Season 1 DLC commercial
  • Will Smith
  • BTS
  • Jack Black
  • Emo Petter (aka Bully Maquire) played by Toby Maguire
  • FЯED played by Lucas Cruikshank
  • Paul Rudd
  • Mike Tyson
  • Tom Holland

Online Tournie
  • Fire Emblem Clash
  • Painting the Town (Splatoon-themed Tournie)
  • Battle for Hyrule (Legend of Zelda-themed Tournie)
  • Under the Super Happy Tree (Yoshi-themed Tournie)

DISCUSSION ROUND: ADDING A 3RD PARTY JRPG CHARACTER

One thing that Ultimate DLC had was JRPG representation in the form of Joker, Hero, Byleth, Sephiroth, and technically Sora but to a lesser extent. Infinite DLC won't be as heavy on the JRPG but we are including it none the less - especially as our launch roster was lacking it. That being said, we will soon be submitting characters to represent the JRPG genre.

My intention for this upcoming submission job is to:

Have us submit a character from a JRPG series that doesn't have representation in Smash.

However, for the first time in our thread history (and this is a trial): I want us to discuss it this is an eligible ruling and, if not, how can we tweak it.

If we need to tweak we, consider the following questions:
  • Should we be able to include a new rep from a JRPG franchise in the game already?
  • Should we allow other FF characters to be included other than FF7?
  • Should we only focus on new companies or is Square-Enix eligible?
  • etc
So we will be having really be focusing on two aspects of this job:

1) What characters and franchises could we possibly submit?
2) Is this above ruling an eligible/sensible or should it be expanded

We will commence submissions in sixish hours.

Ah, JRPGs, the best genre in Smash. I might try to submit Adol from the Ys series, unless somebody else would rather do it.

My thoughts on adding a 3rd Party JRPG character:

To be fair, here are the characters I think we should consider adding as a 3rd party JRPG character:

Adol (Ys) or any Falcon character: Falcom is one of the progenitors of the JRPG genre and Adol can represent the PC-Engine as well. Plus, he wouldn’t be that gimmick heavy as he could just have the bump system and the liking.

Prinny or a Disagea rep: Nippon Ichi isn’t really represented in this game I think and they are another name in the JRPG world.

A Phantasy Star rep like Alis Lansdale: Another big name series that pushed the genre from SEGA but we already have a SEGA character as a DLC character.

A third Final Fantasy character: I feel a third Final Fantasy character can broaden the representation of the franchise as I believe only Final Fantasy VII is the only FF game with content. Maybe have someone like the FF party from the NES/Famicom FF games to represent the older titles.

For Square Enix, it’s 50/50 for me as there are still characters like Crono and what not but there are other companies that had influence on the genre so I’m in the middle here.

After thinking about it I think old companies should about allowed. Still keep it to new series though.

I’m fine with a JRPG job but personally I’m not a fan of only revisiting a series or even a company as little as possible: Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest are both megatons in the industry for reasons beyond their name, and it’d be a shame if their worlds were only allowed to be represented through one or two maximally meaningful reps especially in a specific JRPG category and especially since revisiting third party series was such a success with Sepiroth (and, in the fictional Infinite world, Eggman.)

Similarly, I feel like we should allow Square Enix submissions since we‘d needlessly leave out infamous entries in the genre for the “satisfaction” of bringing an extra name into the credits. I don’t see how we can have a fair winner in this category if the asterisk is “we left out neku and crono for arbitrary reasons”.

Tl;dr I feel like pre-emptively judging characters by IP or company is a counter-productive way to get the best character for the job and shifts the focus of the game from characters to IPs, which is just kinda silly in a character-based fighting game.

I personally don't think another Square character should be added for this job, as someone who is a big fan of their other stuff, but it should still be an option, they've still got plenty of great characters to choose from in their JRPG's such as Jack "I'm here to kill Chaos" Garland. If the people don't want a new Square JRPG, they won't vote for it, so that's why I don't think that ruling out those submissions is the best or most efficient idea.

So, JRPG character. I have a few JRPGs in mind that I think we could include in the future:

Hyperdimension Neptunia (Character: Neptune/Purple Heart): The franchise is a bit niche, but honestly, the only thing it has going for it is that Smash is a celebration of gaming while Neptunia is a scenario of "the game industry represented by waifus". Hell, the game it takes place in is literally called, "Gameindustri".

Fate (Saber): Okay, yes, I know Fate started as a visual novel franchise, but it's got a fair bit of JRPGs popular in Japan and the world such as the Fate/EXTRA series and Fate/Grand Order respectively. We don't have a Type-MOON rep at the moment, so I think a Fate character could fill that niche, even though this one is kind of cheating.

Tales (Velvet Crowe, Lloyd Irving, Yuri Lowell): Tales is a fairly popular suggestion from Bandai Namco in Smash, even after we got the likes of PAC-MAN and Tekken in the game, and it's in for a good reason. For one, Tales's control scheme is near-1:1 with Smash's, so we practically have a set already. The question now is who we include: Lloyd Irving is popular enough to at least come back as a Mii Costume when Kazuya's pack came out, Velvet Crowe had a pretty good burst of popularity, Yuri has a pretty big following amongst the Tales fanbase, and Arise did exceptionally well-enough that Alphen and Shionne are on the table. I feel like we should gravitate towards that if nothing else.

Tactics Ogre (Denam Pavel): I know some people don't want another Square character, but hear me out for this one: apparently, when I learned about a report that a game called Tactics Ogre was being remade for modern platforms and shared it with my Discord friends in another server, I apparently discovered that Tactics Ogre is a critical and commercial success that was an extremely huge groundwork layer for future Strategy RPGs including Fire Emblem. It's not really heard of as of today, but god damn I never would've thought that this influenced Fire Emblem. If we're forced to add another Square character, then we should go for what's considered obscure these days, and Tactics Ogre fits the bill.

Suikoden (Riou): Since Silent Hill is apparently a very sensitive topic on this thread and I still feel we need another Konami rep in this, I decided to stick to another fairly popular alternative: Suikoden, based on the famous Water Margin story from China. It's a game where you can gather 108 different playable characters (yeah, 108 of them), and Suikoden II is these days considered one of the greatest video games of all time. Not many video games can receive such an honor. Do I think it'll be hard to jam 108 characters into one slot? Yes, in fact it'd be impossible. But this next pack is going to be Fighter #108, and I would find that to be a very funny coincidence.

So I'm open either way, basically. There are plenty of popular picks from Square and all the other 3rd party companies in Smash already, but there are also plenty of popular picks from companies that aren't in Smash, so I'm just gonna be open to either option.

Isn't Fate an erotic visual novel series? Seems extremely inappropriate.

Only in the first print, and even then, you could count all of them on one hand. Everything afterward removed those questionable scenes and replaced them with something else. In fact, Nasu didn't want to put in those h-game scenes, but at the time it was the only thing that'll make them sell, so he had to bite the bullet.

I would consider 2B to be a pseudo JRPG character but probably would be ineligible for this job. Thoughts on this as I’m a bit biased on it.
Hold up, so which definition of JRPG are we using? The gameplay one (static, turn based, attributes assigned to attacks, menus) or the literal one (any RPG made in Japan)? Honestly the second definition is really silly but I wanna make sure.

Would Undertale/Deltarune be elligable? They're kinda on the other side of the argument as series like Nier or Soulsbornes: they have the gameplay of a JRPG, but were made in the west.

Honesty RPGs as a genre are incredibly poorly defined. There should be no universe where YS, Omori, Monster Hunter and Fallout could be argued to share a genre

We just had a western character addition and, for our next character, we are solely focusing on Japanes properties. That being said, season 2 dlc will have two total western characters. Ratchet and Clank and then one more but I won’t be someone from this particular job.

Alright, we will begin our submissions!

Here are the criteria for a Japanese RPG also called JRPG

1. Must be from a series made in Japan

2. It came be from Square-Enix and Atlus but not from Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Persona (Shin Megami Tensei), and Kingdom Hearts is not allowed.

3. It can be from a traditional JRPG game with turn-based gameplay but can be also from JRPG games that has free or semi-free combat such as Takes of Symphonia. The main thing is the character must be from a game that allows typical level progression and fantastical settings found in most JRPG games. For this reason, Souls and NieR is allowed.

4. The franchise needs to have some presence on Nintendo systems.

When submitted, please provide the name and picture of the character, the franchise and company it’s from, and why the character would fit in with the JRPG requirements. This is especially true to the franchise’s importance to the JRPG genre.

RIOU

Who is he?
Riou is the main protagonist of the second entry in the prestigious Suikoden series, a turn-based RPG made by Konami based on the Chinese story, the Water Margin. He's a rebellious protagonist that's determined to do battle against Highland as the leader of an Allied Army. The Suikoden series is known for insane stories and sporting a total of 108 characters to play as.

Why Riou?
Riou, as mentioned before, is the protagonist of Suikoden II, an RPG released in 1998 that is considered one of the greatest video games of all time, an honor rarely bestowed these days. He's also a tonfa fighter, which I believe we've had none of. But the main draw for him would be him leading 107 other characters to battle. See, Suikoden has three different battle systems: you have your Basic Battles, where you lead a party of 6 to do battle, One-on-One Duels, where you use a single character to battle in a special event, and Strategic War Battles, which for most of the game is basically Fire Emblem. I believe we could blend some of these together in a sort of playstyle where Riou could fight by himself but could summon 5 other characters to fight alongside him (Who those 5 are, we'd have to pick from the most popular of the 108). While Suikoden has majorly been on PlayStation systems, he has appeared in spin-offs such as Genso Suikoden Card Stories, as well as having crossed over to other games like Super Bomberman R Online, so there are some Nintendo appearances for him.

Character submission:
Crono (Chrono Trigger)

(Sorry for lack of photo)

Crono is main protagonist of Chrono Trigger game and he is a silent protagonist that his personality matches conventional hero archetype and he lives with his mother Truce in Present Era. He can time travel by his vehicle called "Epoch" and he travels throught random time periods like prehistory to gather his friends like Frog to team up with him to defeat the main evil: Lavos, who wants to destroy the world and timeline.
His game was one of best JRPG games that exist and it's truly a classic that was designed by famous manga creator Akira Toriyama.
(I didn't played Chrono Trigger too much)

Crono has a lot of moveset potential, since he is JRPG Fighter and he could use time travel as one of his moves. Also he could use his teammates' attacks like Frog's for example.
Crono could be middleweight dighter with no movement options and he could be fast All-Around fighter (or rushdown, since I don't know too much about archtypes).
(Also could allude to Chrono Cross by some attacks or taunts)

He is one of most wanted fighter and a lot of fans really want him in game.

I nominate him, because people want him in game, so he could join Smash Infinite as DLC fighter that could be another swordfighter (Sorry fans). Although his series are dormant, nothing can stop him from joining the roster as retro 3rd party Fighter.
He should join smash, since he comes from the best JRPG game of all time. Nuff said.
