Super Mario 40th anniversary discussion

The Super Mario franchise’s 40th anniversary is in 2025 and I wanted to dedicate an entire thread to it. Feel free to share your hopes and expectations for the anniversary, as well as any news that Nintendo shares in relation to it.

• My hopes
  • The Switch 2’s launch is engineered around the 40th anniversary, with a new 3D Mario and new Mario Kart releasing within the first year of its life cycle
  • Mario Movie 2 teaser trailer
  • A discount on all Mario games currently on Switch
  • Super Mario 3D All-Stars becomes permanently available for purchase, with Galaxy 2 added to the collection
  • Every Mario-adjacent franchise (DK, Yoshi, Wario, etc.) gets acknowledgment
• My expectations
  • March 10th acknowledgement
  • A special Nintendo Direct
  • A new Luigi’s Mansion releases within the first year of the Switch 2’s life cycle

If we do get a new 3D Mario, I wonder what sort of gimmick they'll use for it, or what kinds of characters will appear. Because that usually dictates how most of the Mario stuff for the rest of the system's lifespan will look like.

Some information about the planned Super Mario Bros. Movie sequel would be nice, but it probably won't show up until the later part of 2025, or even 2026 for all we know.

The cynical part of me kind of just expects nothing to happen at all.

...okay, jokes aside; new Google Doodle, teaser for the second Mario Movie by the end of 2025 (it'll disappoint people, and Wario will turn up in a post-credit scene), Super Mario World 40, or something gimmicky like that, and another Hot Wheels collection themed after Mario enemies or something. Oh, and All-Stars to get another temporary run. (With absolutely no changes.)

I feel like there be a bigger collection for the older games and the next 3D Mario game will be announced or released by the end. There hasn't been a completely new one since Odyssey in 2017. There was Bowser's Fury in 2021 but that's essentially the equivalent of Shadow Generations and probably a test for the next one.

MARIO DAY - MARCH 10th 2025

• Mario Kart 9 is formally revealed with a name, with a tease of new gimmicks, retro tracks, characters, etc.
• New Super Mario Bros. Wii HD is revealed as a game releasing on Switch 1 in Summer 2025.
• Mario Movie 2 casting is announced, with confirmation of:
  • Mario, Luigi, Peach, Bowser, Toad, Kamek returning
  • Yoshi (no voice)
  • Daisy
  • Toadette
  • E. Gadd
  • King Boo
  • Bowser Jr.
• A reminder that Super Nintendo World USA is opening soon.
• A confirmation that a brand new 3D Mario game is in development.

NINTENDO DIRECT - APRIL 2nd 2025

• More Mario Kart 9 content, releasing in June.
• A formal unveiling of a new 3D Mario, releasing in October.
• Nintendo DS games are coming to NSO only for Switch 2. Among them are New Super Mario Bros. and Mario Kart DS.

SUPER MARIO 40TH ANNIVERSARY DIRECT - SEPTEMBER 2025

• A first look at The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2.
  • It is a chase scene between Mario and Shadow Mario in Peach’s Castle on a rainy day.
  • Yoshi is a big part of the marketing.
• More details on that new 3D Mario game.
• Dr. Mario 99.
• More DS games on NSO, including Mario & Luigi Partners in Time, Mario Party DS, and Super Mario 64 DS.
• Mario Tennis is coming to Switch 2.
• Luigi’s Mansion 1 HD is coming in February 2026 for Switch 1. It is a port of the 3DS version.
• Super Mario Maker 3 is revealed, with new styles based on New Super Mario Bros. Wii and Super Mario Bros. Wonder.

NINTENDO DIRECT - FEBRUARY 2026

• More info on Luigi’s Mansion 1 HD and Super Mario Maker 3.
• Yoshi’s Woolly World is coming to Switch 1.
• Super Smash Bros. for Switch 2 is revealed, with as veterans, and Paper Mario the first newcomer.
