This is what came to my mind on 4's ending:

To paraphrase SomcallmeJohnny's review and reaction to Mega Man 6's ending: "Holy **** he brought a rope handcuffs!"

Seriously, all the times they just left Mr. X for dead feel kind of silly now.

Spoiler tags weren't working.

Anyone take the time to read the character bios in Extras?

Blaze's is really funny. She punched the Commissioner in the face over an "ethical dispute", gets involved in street fights even when not fighting crime and refuses to take anger management. She's also the one responsible for bringing everyone together for this game.

Shiva is also kind of funny if only for the skewed priorities. What ultimately drove him to leave the Syndicate was animal cruelty. Nuking a city, probably with animal collateral damage? OK. But animal experimentation? Not OK. That must have been some enlightenment he smoked.

-Max “Thunder” Hatchett (Brown)
-Eddie “Skate” Hunter (Yellow)
-Dr. Gilbert Zan (Blue)

-Mr. X (Green)

Walk: Axel slowly side-steps forwards.

Jog: His walk from the games.

Dash: His dash from the games.

Damage: His damage animation from the games.

Jump: His jump from the games.

Crouch: Axel puts one hand on the ground, as if he were trying to get an item (the item pickup animation is exactly how it is from the games when Axel DOES get an item).

Weapon of Choice: Axel’s combat style is entirely hand-to-hand.

Jab: Axel punches twice with his left hand (5%, small knockback) and then a third time with his right hand (6%, small knockback)
Forward+A: Axel kicks outward with his left leg (8%, OK knockback)
Down+A: Axel kicks along the floor with his right leg, which can trip the target (7%, small knockback)
Up+A: Axel performs an uppercut with his right hand (12%, OK knockback)

Air+A: Axel performs a backflip kick with his right leg (11%, OK knockback); taken from one of Skate’s normal attacks.
Air Forward+A: Axel kicks outwards with his left leg (10%, OK knockback)
Air Back + A: Axel kicks backwards with his both legs (14%, OK knockback); taken from one of Skate’s aerials.
Air Up+A: Axel kicks upwards with his right leg (12%, OK knockback)
Air Down+A: Axel knees the target with both knees (13% with a meteor effect, OK knockback)

Dash Attack: Thunder Tackle; Axel charges forward and attacks with his elbow (15%, OK knockback); taken from one of Max’s specials.
Edge Attack: Axel sweeps with his left leg as he gets back up (11%, OK knockback)

Up+A: Embukyaku; Axel kicks upwards with his left leg (22%, medium knockback); taken from one of Blaze’s specials.

Down+Throw: Axel Toss; Axel vaults over the target and throws them down on the ground, burying them (15%)
Back+Throw: Axel drops his back onto the ground and throws the target backwards (13%, OK knockback)
Up+Throw: Axel briefly jumps up, and then kicks upwards while holding the target (16%, OK knockback); taken from one of Skate’s throws.

Special Moves

B : Dragon Smash; by holding B, Axel charges up a flurry of punches that he unleashes after, finishing with an uppercut (22%, medium knockback; 2.1% recoil)
B + Forwards : Grand Upper; Axel dashes forward and uppercuts the target with great vertical height (17%, medium knockback; 1.2% recoil); it’s basically Captain Falcon’s Raptor Boost, but with less distance.
B + Up : Grand Hook; Axel performs a 360 Dragon Wing with emphasis on horizontal movement (11%, OK knockback), and finishes with an uppercut with emphasis on vertical movement (18%, medium knockback; 1.7% recoil)
B + Down : Dragon Wing; Axel punches in a 360 turn (9%, small knockback), and then punches straight forward (19%, medium knockback; 1.6% recoil)

Final Smash: Police Backup; Axel punches up to three targets at once (9%), and then said targets are dragged into a cutscene where Axel radios in for backup. A police car arrives and the cops fire their bazookas at the targets, who are trapped in a ring of flames followed by an explosion (53%, devastating knockback).

Gimmick: Axel’s damage slowly rises whenever he uses a special move; however, there’s a meter you’re granted at the start of each stock that grants you one special move without damage. This meter has a 5-second cool down between special moves.

Taunts
1: “Go straight!” Axel mimics his pose from SoR2’s US box art.
2: Axel mimics his pose from Bare Knuckle 2’s box art.
1+2: Axel mimics his pose from SoR3’s box art.

Winposes
1: Axel loosely mimics his pose from Bare Knuckle’s box art.
2: Axel looks towards the distance, and waves towards an incoming helicopter
3: Axel jumps in kicking, loosely based on SoR1’s US box art.

Icon: The “R” in the first game’s logo.

Boxing Ring Title: Bare-Knuckled Ex-Cop

Victory Music: https://youtu.be/VyUmHYtG3xc

Kirby Hat: Axel’s hair and bandana
Oh, and I also revised his Classic Mode a bit:

Only change I'd make to it is I'd make the SoR logo Axel's fist sort of like in this pic. It'd fit the street-brawling theme more and the Japanese name of the series is Bare Knuckle.

But aside from that nitpick, it looks great! I'll add it to the OP.

Kinda more partial to Blaze out of the OG characters, but support Axel nonetheless.

Streets of Rage 2 was my first experience with the series, but since the 4 (which was definitely worth the wait) made the versions of everyone from the first three games unlockables, down to the original sprites and everything, it's almost like I've played all the games now, in a manner. Awesome throwback in addition to other things like the hidden retro levels.

Can say Blaze was my favorite out of the SoR1 cast. For 2, I guess Skate with how quick he his, though his damage output left a bit to be desired. For SoR 3, everyone's actually pretty solid, but would have to go with Shiva. Out of the SoR4 cast, Cherry I see as like an improved version of Skate conceptually (smaller speedy character with a strong aerial move), though Adam's grown on me too and like how much a Luke Cage vibe he's kinda given to me now. Floyd definitely took the most adjusting at first with his lack of mobility, but once you know how to punish with him he's good.

Certainly a good time for one of the most influential series of the beat em up genre to be back and better than ever.

I had an idea for Spirits based on common enemies:

Donovan (:ultswordfighter:x7, Donovan Costume; :starman::starman:)
-Defeat an army of fighters
-A couple enemies start the battle with a Fire Bar

Big Ben (Red :ultkrool:x3, :starman::starman:)
-Fire/explosion attacks aren’t as effective
-The enemy breathes fire

Y. Signal (:ultsonic:x8, :starman::starman:)
-Defeat an army of fighters
-The enemy favors grabs and throws

I'm game, on one condition...

...he's gotta have the beard. At least in an alt! SoR4 Axel is one of my favorite recent character designs in a game for sure.

Here’s my idea for an SoR stage:

Wood Oak City
Downtown Slums

View attachment 270962
Game of Origin: Streets of Rage 2 (1992)

Description: This city was once a happy, peaceful place…until one day, a powerful secret criminal organization took over. This vicious Syndicate soon had control of the government and even the police force. The city has become a center of violence and crime where no one is safe.

Amid this turmoil, fighters must fend off the waves of goons plaguing the city, as well as their regular opponents. They must be willing to risk anything—even their lives…on the Streets of Rage.

Layout: The stage starts at the above picture, where fighters duke it out on just the sidewalk, then scrolls towards the right towards the entrance to a bar. The screen fades to black, and fighters find themselves in a bar. The stage then scrolls right again, over to a piano. After fading to black again, the fighters then wind up at the amusement park, with a roller coaster above them. The stage scrolls right one last time over to the entrance to a pirate ship attraction, and then fades to black, restarting at the sidewalk.

Gimmicks and Hazards: Several common Streets of Rage enemies will show their face and attack fighters. They are treated like enemies from the Subspace Emissary, where they fly off screen when defeated. Their health bars are even taken straight out of Streets of Rage 2.

-Galsia: An enemy with a blue jacket and red hair. The most basic and common punk, with little HP and a couple attacks. They can either punch you directly (3%, small knockback) or run from one side of the screen, slashing left and right with a knife (6%, small knockback). They can be defeated with the strength of a Smash attack.

-Donovan: A shirtless enemy with tanned skin, wearing a chain and jeans. About as common as Galsias, but more powerful. He has a combo of two jabs and an uppercut (7%, small knockback) and an uppercut that can interrupt attacks from above (8%, small knockback). He also carries a pipe that he swings around (9-12%, OK knockback); when enough damage is done, fighters can knock the pipe out of his hands and use it as an item. It’s a weaker version of the Baseball Bat that breaks after a few uses.

-Y. Signal: An enemy in a yellow jacket with a mohawk. The strongest of the three enemy types found here, Y. Signals can slide attack (8%, OK knockback) and throw fighters from behind (11%, OK knockback). They move slowly, but react quickly at close range, so focus on ranged attacks.

-Electra (Stage Boss): A lady with an electric whip arm who only appears in the bar. She can not only lash out at and stun fighters with her whip (10%, OK knockback), but she can also perform a flying kick with her heels (12%, OK knockback) and restrain a fighter and bombard them with kisses (damage slowly rises by 1%-2%). Fighters can break free when restrained.

Aside from Electra, enemies appear in numbers, with more of them the more fighters on screen. There are also yellow trash cans around the city and amusement park that spawn an item when destroyed.

The piano in the bar can be used as a trampoline to get to the higher floor, even by Electra. Fighters can also climb up to the roller coaster tracks and fight there, but a warning appears for fighters to climb back down. The coaster itself appears from the left side of the screen and can run fighters over (35%, far knockback)

Music:

-Main Theme - Streets of Rage (New Remix)

-Go Straight (Streets of Rage 2; New Remix)

-In the Bar (Streets of Rage 2; New Remix)

-Spin on the Bridge (Streets of Rage 2)

-Dreamer (Streets of Rage 2; New Remix)

-Under Logic (Streets of Rage 2)

-Slow Moon (Streets of Rage 2)

-Wave 131 (Streets of Rage 2; New Remix)

-Revenge of Mr. X (Streets of Rage 2; New Remix)

-Fighting in the Street (Streets of Rage)

-Moon Beach (Streets of Rage; New Remix)

-Violent Breathing (Streets of Rage; New Remix)

-Fuze (Streets of Rage 3; New Remix)

-Dub Slash (Streets of Rage 3; New Remix)

-The Poets 1 (Streets of Rage 3; New Remix)

-They’re Back (Streets of Rage 4)

-The Streets (Streets of Rage 4)

-Call the Cops (Streets of Rage 4)

-Funky HQ (Streets of Rage 4; New Remix)

-Ghost Fair (Streets of Rage 4)

-Shiva (Streets of Rage 4)

-An Exhibition (Streets of Rage 4)

-25 Years Ago (Streets of Rage 4)

Battlefield/Ω Form: The Ω form has the amusement park in the background. The Ω form platform is based on the upper floor of the bar, with the banister in the front. The battlefield platforms are based on the sidewalk in downtown.

I completed Streets of Rage 2 (on my neighbor's SEGA Genesis Mini) weeks ago and Streets of Rage 4 on Xbox One's Game Pass yesterday, so I'll also support Axel (or any other SoR character) because a beat 'em up genre seems to be scarce in representation (besides Cody and River City characters being spirits).

How’s this for a trailer idea:

Some time has passed…since the last struggle against villainy. The fall of Mr. X’s Syndicate has relieved the city and its people of chaos, and it’s been happy and peaceful ever since…

Until one day, an even greater crisis threatens more than just the city. Mysterious beams have been spotted, and hundreds of people-even major Syndicate members-have mysteriously disappeared. In addition, strange puppet-like beings that act like the people of Wood Oak have appeared all over the city. Only ex-cop Axel Stone remains to investigate not only the puppets and the beams, but the disappearance of his friends.

A task like this will be harder than anything Axel has seen before. With only him to get to the bottom of things, he must be willing to risk everything—even his life, in…

Can't he just help Terry beat up some fools in the street? Streets Of Rage has never been known for it's drama, and Streets Of Light just sounds... dumb. Not very original either since you could shoehorn World Of Light for pretty much any character if you really wanted.

I noticed something odd about SoR2 Blaze in 4. Her star move ends with her striking a pose that I don't remember her ever doing in the game of origin. Anyone else notice quirks like that for some retro characters?

I did feel something was kinda off with SoR2 Blaze in the game compared to what I remembered of her originally, but didn’t give it too much thought. Hm... Perhaps they did make little changes to some of the retro characters like that, though inconsequential.

I don't know why it took me until playing SoR4 to realize this, but yeah.

Having Streets of Rage repped in Smash would be pretty freakin' cool, and I could definitely see Axel being a really fun character. I'm a supporter.

With how popular Streets of Rage became via 2, I’m surprised there was no generic action cartoon based off it in the 90’s. Generic action cartoons were at their peak.
The only beat-em-ups I remember getting a TV spot were Double Dragon and I think Battletoads. After the NES period they were more picky with IPs, and Sega was super-pushing Sonic to outdo Nintendo at something, anything.

After the 16-bit wars Sega franchises tended to get anime adaptations instead, for things like Virtua Fighter, Sakura Wars and Valkyria Chronicles.

I support!

I love beat 'em up games like Double Dragon, Final Fight, and Streets of Rage. They are better when it is two players or more. It is more fun than playing solo.

I've been playing Streets Of Rage 4 since yesterday.

So far the game is really fun and challenging!!! Would totally reccomend It to everyone!

As for Axel in Smash: I would love to have him as much as any SEGA rep. Alex Kidd, Sakura, Beat, Ryo Hazuki, Ulala, AiAi, Joe Musashi.... SEGA overall has a lot of really awesome characters who would fit the Spirit of Smash really well!

alright so i've been playing some of that sweet sweet sor4 and here's a big-ass writeup on my current thoughts
i'm really surprised at how deep the combat is and the weapon variety this time around
and although i really dig how they made it look like a comic book, i do have a few other thoughts about the aesthetic
streets of rage always (or at least the first two games) had the perfect balance between the grit of crime stories like this and that more colorful 90's club feel
this made the games stand out a lot in the visual and music department, among other things
sor4 i feel falls in the same boat as sor3 in leaning a bit too much on the grit
however, i don't mind this as much for two reasons
first: unlike sor3, sor4 nails the direction it does go in, while still having great visuals and music. sor3, however, felt...dull and lifeless and way too serious, it felt robotic, almost. sor4, while it does lean a bit more on the grit like i said, still has that "hell yeah, let's kick some ass!" spirit, just in a different way
and second: they probably wouldn't have managed to nail the original aesthetic anyway unless they went full sonic mania. a big part of it was the sprites and the mega drive's limitations, which, all combined together made this very cool aesthetic, but it's a bit of a product of its time and was kind of a perfect storm of the exact technology they had back then and the original devs' vision
and sor4 is still an amazing game despite this, while i honestly didn't have much of a good time with sor3
overall, it seems very much like a worthy successor so far
also dammit dotemu lemme play as modern-day shiva, his new design is legit my favorite piece of character design in the series

Given the sheer number of characters that already have movesets (current Shiva, current Max, Estel) and potential other ones (Roo, modern Skate) there's money to be made in having DLC.

I'd honestly be totally content if they just made Max playable. Though I'd love Skate too.

i got into streets of rage very recently and its awesome. add me as a supporter. though if streets of rage was in smash, i would want axel and blaze to be integrated into 1 character and have a sort of fusion moveset.
