Sonic's throw game

I believe Sonic's throws are among the very best in the game. They set Sonic up for almost all of his best moves and techniques. The only problem I'm having is using ASC cancels on Wifi. I often hold the R button as I charge a Spin Dash, only to have Sonic dash towards them, not allowing me to Shield cancel and grab them. What do you find is the easiest way to to ASC cancels?
