Sonic - online and offline differences?

Hm...

So recently, since it's the beginning of my summer vacation, I've been going around and playing wifi matches with people on allisbrawl.com since I don't have any randoms to play against offline anymore.

Someone brought to my attention that he could tell I played Sonic online alot, mainly because I used the spin-dashes (side/down) often (though I couldn't combo out of it for life lol). I could see his point, since I was subconsciously taking advantage of the lag and hitting people on either the approach or on the turn-around.

So... there are apparent (?) differences between offline and online Sonic play, I guess.

He mentioned that there are better approaches offline, which I seldom used online due to lag/mistiming moves, like f-air. That spindashes, according to him, are easily(?) shieldgrabbed offline (and he actually got some on me, but usually on the turnarounds -_-).

Anyone agree with what he said (shield grabs especially)?

Offline tips for approaches? Differences in styles?

Disagreements? :x

Come to think of it, my approach game online is slightly different compared to offline. Online, I tend to spindash or try to grab, whereas offline I run in with fair or wait for them to do something...

online is 10x harder with sonic. runnings grabs and hyphen smashing are such a big part of my game, it really screws you up with a 0.1 secod lag. characters like pikachu, you could have a 0.5 second lag and still win without trying. also, online i dont go for nearly as many gimps as offline, since the slight delay is sometimes enough to cause the gimp to fail horribly and i end up being camped off the ledge.

Sonic's whole gameplay is based on his speed, so you need to take advantage of absolutely every moment you can. If the response speed slows down even a tiny bit, that seriously throws off gameplay. This is why I just don't play as Sonic online anymore. It demonstrates that your speed is only as good as your weakest link between your character, your connection, and all other players' connections.

As for me, I consider myself a good Sonic player. Online its another story because that 1 second delay throws off everything for me. But I would still be eager to play online just so I can fix that and adjust myself to the wifi play style.

I dont play Sonic in laggy matches. But if the match doesnt have lag or Im playing offline, there is a big difference. You catch your opponent off guard more often.

Yeah, I agree with that.

I'm used to laggy games (online games) so I kinda figured to do inputs before you see them (like, input for a spindash combo) so as long as the first hit makes it, the rest of the hits will follow.

Does anyone have the situation where using an approach that works online fails in offline play?

I guess since 90% of my online matches have been with Sonic... it doesn't bother me too much. Some people don't like using their Main as much online, but I really just try to adjust. If anything, I think it's made my sonic better because it teaches me to distinguish between the delay of actual move startups, and the slightest delay caused by input lag.

Don't get me wrong, if you are playing with a horrible connection and the input lag is aweful, or worse there's regular lag during the match then it's going to be a problem for me regardless of the character I pick.

Where people get NOTHING.
I consider myself a somewhat decent Sonic but I just can't seem to play well online.

I've only played a few matches online so far but,the lag really messes me up. I rarely dare pursue an oponent off stage online for fear I won't recover becuase of pressing ^b at the wrong time. and I mess up my approach a whole lot as well online.

I don't play people that much so wifi is fun even if I suck on it. XD

BTW please trade fcs with me so I can play you. I wanna fight some tough oponents.

Yeah, all characters have that problem like for example Sheik online can much easier chain together at times a fair to down smash or tilt even if she hits a opponent shield but offline that is noticeable easier to punish although the timing on my end is easier(you gotta love buffing when it’s actually useful).

Also I wouldn't be surprise if I could ftilt you more out of more of your approaches, Tenki. ;)

>_> People actually use the turnaround?

I've never used Sonic online, but I would never turn around during a spindash. The laggy turnaround allows your opponent preparation for a counter or a clash then counter. The spindash > JC > homing attack is riskier offline as well.

Typically, if I know someone can avoid a spindash, then I JC early and either nair or bair, depending on the situation. I pretty much use all of Sonic's aerials as approaches (except for maybe uair), as well as a ground spring and the running grab. Or I could use an early JCed spindash to attack with a short-hop aerial. There are enough approaches to keep Sonic unpredicatable and effective.

I used to.

I've played online alot since then, and the 'shuttle loop' movement is alot more fun, not to mention that it can give a FSJ stun/knockdown and/or setup for more spindashes.

I've gotten used to playing with and without lag (yay for high speed connection opponents), so I can pretty much play with spindashes on or offline :x

One thing I noticed though is that I suck at doing spindash combos online :[

I can't play Sonic very well online. All his aerials become SIGNIFICANTLY slower and its so much harder to throw people. Can't shield cancel as well as offline. Short hopped bairs are almost impossible. Sonics one of the few characters where already horrible lag becomes a nightmare.

How do you find it hard to shield cancel?

If you're shieldcancelling side-B, you just hit shield before 2(-2.5, depending on your framerate slowdown) seconds after you hit B.

If you're shieldcancelling ASC, you just hold shield the whole time after you release, until you land, lol.

If you have orange/red lag with someone (orange circle on the upper right of their name box), stop playing with them.

Does anyone have the situation where using an approach that works online fails in offline play?
laollllllll

I know lots of them now.
