Sonic + items

Sonic definitely is a top tier character with items on.
I don't care about random items, but some matchups give us items, and Sonic seems to have a lot of untapped potential with them.

Characters with items we can get our hands on:
Diddy (bananas, peanuts)
Peach (turnips)
Snake (grenades)
Wario (bike parts)
ZSS (suit pieces)
ROB (gyro)
TLink (bombs)
Link (bombs)

Sonic's maneuverability and excellent dash attack let him get items easily. Our spindashes run right over Diddy's bananas, which is fantastic. Sonic's glide-toss is amazing. And items can be z-dropped from SDJ without interruption!

I'm wondering what unknown tricks we might have for using items; particularly Diddy's bananas. We know diddy has lots of tricks; dribbling, crazy banana-locks, etc. Things I'm interested in:
  • Bananas from a Spring (either up-B or grounded spring, any weird locks we can do, ways to bounce the opponent on a spring from the item-throw, etc.)
  • Can we catch items with Dair? What's the timing window on that?
  • Ways to use SDJ's Z-drop / item throw options creatively
  • Moar spindash fakeouts; SD hop or ASC jump-cancel to unexpected item-throw (remember you can't see the item while Sonic's in spindash), etc.
  • Throw > spinshot + catch? Any other weird options we have to catch/dribble, using our fantastic speed?
  • Anything interesting about using items from a grind?

I find itemthrow input kinda finnicky; sometimes I'll spring and Fair, sometimes it will item-throw. Any tips about how Brawl reads the input?

Also keep in mind that the first few frames of an airdodge can be cancelled with an item-throw; this can help you counterattack if you're being juggled while you have an item in-hand!

Edit: And finally, I bring you a new finding........ yet another way for Sonic to air-trip :(
Up-B, Dair and land during your item-throw animation. It's not a real landing, so the next time you get in the air (unless you're hit), you'll be air-tripped.

this could be an interesting thread. hopefully something good comes from it.

That glide toss is disgusting. too bad he can't pick up his spring...

I like the idea of this thread :D

If I get the chance I'll try and experiment with some of these things.

So...you can drop items while in an SDJ?
What about during an ASC? If you could hit with ASC then drop a gyro on them or something...whoa...

EDIT: ...and once again...in the act of trying to make Sonic better...we make him worse.

ggs guys, ggs.

lol

- D-air can indeed catch items. You can D-throw item > D-air to catch bounce (cough, bananas, turnips).

- this wasn't SDJ, but I had this spur-of-the-moment trap against a Diddy where I was at around top of SDJ height, Z-dropped, fastfell, and charged F-smash. We were both on last stock so the Diddy tried to go forward and dash attack/grab or something, but I bananablocked him and charge F-smashed his trip.

- Run > JC F-throw (think of SH F-air's input) > dash attack (recatch) or grab (if opponent shields)

- The spring lets you use aerials as normal as long as you use the attack during the "IASA" portion of the spring.

other random but not obvious tricks to Sonic players:
- DACIT. I can't control it.

- Item F-smash: Hold A ( for example, maybe buffer/start holding it while rolling, spotdodge, or some other movement) > C-stick forward [charges - let go of A to release]

PS feel free to use anything from the bahnurrnurr thread.

Double-post because this is wicked

Whoah. Not only can SDJ z-drop items... it can also pick them up!

If you have the timing, you can pick up bananas as you lift off the ground.
So an SDR/SDJ can safely pick up a banana off the floor and place it wherever you want, without at all interfering with your spindash... and it's also hard to tell what Sonic's doing, since the banana is invisibile during the spindash.

It looks reeeally funny to do repeated VSDJs while picking up and dropping a banana. If you time it right, you can z-drop the banana as you're falling with VSDJ and z-catch it with the next, without the banana touching the ground.

Furthermore, item-throw can be used as an air-pivot. This means we can constantly down-B in the direction of the banana. All these tools suggest we should be building some really funky things with our item game.

If Green Greens is a legal CP in your tourney, do it.

There is no reason you can't get the apples first and then juggle your opponent with them.

Ah yeah, you gotta include the stages that spawn items Fizzy.

There's like, GGs as mentioned, then there is Distant Planet, and then... uhm... That would be so freaking cool if either of the pokeymanz stadiums spawned pokeybawls (and was still a legal CP), actually I dun know of ne stages that have items on them and are still legal.

BTW I'm back after a 3-5 day vacation (actually I just played WC III DotA I wasn't really gone, just moved on to something that seemed more interesting at the time).
