I do recall Weiss and Rin formerly having a legitimate rivalry before they decided to set aside their differences and started to actually bond. Star and Medea Lily's contract also made sense, but it made sense only after they had built up a strong friendship. By contrast, Ata and Blake having a partnership made sense from the get-go.

...Gonna admit, having a Pokemon might be another thing Ata and Blake have in common soon. I know what I said after Rockruff, but I keep getting ideas lmao.
