playing nines arent exactly productive when you know ever ymove theyre ganna make..
thanks!
I play on console by myself A LOT. I'll just play while me and my roommates are watching TV, cause they don't usually wanna play with me. Here are some ways I 'practice' by myself:
Playing level 9's is a lot of what I do. Not necessarily because its the best, buts its most entertaining. Obviously, you aren't gonna get much spacing out of it, so focus on the other stuff. DI'ing is good to practice, especially against computer characters that drill a lot (i.e., samus up-b, ness neutral b). Making sure you are getting your combo's consistently is also important. Yes computer's DI strangely, but just getting down the muscle memory of the simple stuff (like fthrow -> SH uair with falcon) is helpful. Not much point in edgeguarding a computer that won't fight back, but you can at least practice recoveries by getting the ledge every time (especially since you main ness right? gotta sweetspot that up-b).
Training mode. Combo, combo, combo. Get used to performing combo's that happen in the game. Consistent comboing is very important and one of the easiest things to work on by yourself. You will have to adjust for DI against a real opponent of course, but you should still be able to string together good combo's in games if you can do better ones in training mode. In addition to comboing, just practicing tech skill is very useful. 64 may have less tech skill than the other smash games (i'm actually not sure about brawl), but there is still a tech barrier you have to cross. That is probably one of the weakest parts of my game. I just recently realized I don't ever platform drop naturally, working on it now in training mode and vs. level 9's. If you look at malva's stream he had some cool drills for tech skill you should try.
Break the targets/Board the platforms. I really like doing these, it breaks the monotony of playing against computers and training dummy's and gives me a goal. And, at least in my opinion, it works on my tech skill. It especially helps with consistent tech skill because it takes many attempts to beat one of your own records.
so yea, work on what you can by yourself, mainly tech skill and comboing, and also DI. Try to find good opponents though, because as I've found many times after long breaks from online, there is no substitute for a good 1v1 smash sesh.
