Discounts

If you bring a setup and we use it, you will receive a discount!

This does not mean you are guaranteed a setup discount if you brought one. We have to actually give you an OK to use it! Sticking your setup in and setting it up randomly without telling us will not get you a discount! You
must bring it and check it in at the T.O desk to see if it will be used. Your name will be written down stating that you have a setup and need to be reimbursed. This also prevents players from getting anything stolen, or people randomly taking it.

Also to note, your setup must maintain there throughout the whole event. If you leave early, you will not receive a setup discount. All setups brought and used will be reimbursed during the end of the event!

What is Am
ateur Bracket?

Amateur bracket is geared to the new people who are trying to start fresh in the community. People who are regulars within the brawl or melee community who would be ranked as a intermediate player or higher cannot enter this bracket.

Normally we seed players all players into a regular bracket. Because of this, the new players of the community don't normally get a chance to play and enjoy the tournament experience. This is what the Amateur League Bracket is for. We enter beginner players into a separate bracket, for free of course, and the top 2 winners from this bracket will be entered into the pro bracket for free! To make things more interesting, for each new player who is entered into the Amateur bracket, we add an additional bonus $5.00 into pro bracket from out of the tournament organizer(s) pockets!

It encourages new players, while satisfying old players. A win-win situation!

BRAWL RULESET

General Rules

  • 3 Stocks
  • 8 Minute Time Limit
  • Items set to “Off” and “None”
  • Pause set to “Off”
  • Meta Knight’s infinite dimensional cape tactic is banned.
  • All infinites and chain grabs are legal.
  • There is a 40 Ledge Grab Limit for all characters. If a game goes to time and one player goes over the Ledge Grab Limit for their character, they will automatically lose the game. If both players exceed their Ledge Grab Limit, then this rule is ignored.
  • The act of stalling is banned: stalling is intentionally making the game unplayable: Such as becoming invisible, continuing infinites, chain grabs, or uninterruptible moves past 300%, and reaching a position that your opponent can never reach you.
  • Any action that can prevent the game from continuing (i.e., freezing, disappearing characters, game reset, etc.) will result in a forfeit of that match for the player that initiated the action. You are responsible for knowing your own character, and must be wary about accidentally triggering one of these effects.
  • If the Ledge Grab Limit does not declare one player the winner, the winner will be declared by what the game says in all situations, except for when players are presented with sudden death:
    • In the event of a match going to time, the winner will be determined by who has less percent (stock difference still takes priority but will be shown in the results screen).
    • If the match ends with both players dying at the same time (either coincidentally or via suicide move) or if time ran out with both players at equal percent, a one stock three minute rematch will be played on the same stage. For a tie-breaker match, a Ledge Grab Limit of 15 is used for all characters. The only other exception to this is the game ending from a Bowser or Ganon Suicide tactic, where the initiator of the move wins.
Modified Doubles Rules

    • Team Attack set to “On”
    • Double Meta Knight is Banned.
    • Life stealing is allowed.
    • In the event of a game reaching the time limit, if a single player on a team exceeds their Ledge Grab Limit, that team loses. If one or more players on both teams exceed their Ledge Grab Limit, then the Ledge Grab Limit rule is ignored.
    • In the event of a game going to time and the Ledge Grab Limit can no
t determine a winner and both teams have an equal amount of combined stocks, then whichever team has a lower combined percent is declared the winner.

  • If a player is using the character Pokemon Trainer, Lucario, or Sonic, either team may request that team colors be changed to make it easier to tell the difference between team players.
Set Procedure

  • Player Priority is determined if it can not be agreed on. (See below for details)
  • Each Team selects one controller port to use for each Player.
  • Each Team selects one character for each Player. A double blind pick may be called by any player.
  • The first game is played on a Stage selected from the Starter Stage List either by mutual consent or through the Stage Striking Method. The order of stage striking will be 2-3-1 (Team 1 strikes two stages, followed by Team 2 striking three stages, with Team 1 then striking one of the two remaining stages).
  • The first match is played.
  • The team that lost the previous match may opt to re-pick controller ports (with themselves picking first).
  • The Team that won the previous match may announce one “Stage Ban” if they have not already done so in this set.
  • The Team that lost the previous match announces the stage for the next match from either the Starter or the Counterpick Stage List. Any Stage named as a “Stage Ban” by the either Team may not be selected. No Stage may be used by a Team that has already won on that Stage in this set.
  • The Team that won the previous match chooses one character for each Player.
  • The Team that lost the previous match chooses one character for each Player.
  • The next match is played.
  • Repeat steps 6-11 for all proceeding matches.
Determining Player Priority
If there is a dispute in controller port selection or initiating Stage Strike use the following method:
Teams will use a random method such as Rock-Paper-Scissors, Coin Flip, or Game and Watch Judgment, where the winner selects either first choice in port selection or first choice in stage striking. Whichever team does not receive first choice in port selection will be compensated with first choice in stage striking.

Note: In Doubles, port selection is ordered 1-2-2-1 fashion (with Team-1 having first choice in controller slot select, Team-2 having both second and third choice, and the final slot going to Team-1).

Conduct Rules

  • "DSR: A player/team may not counterpick to the stage they last won on.

Gentleman’s Clause: Any stage may be played on if both players agree to it. This rule takes priority over DSR."If you want to change it, let me know. I wanted to print out a copy or two of the ruleset
  • No scrooging (player may travel under the stage only once from the ledge)
    * "Traveling under the stage once from the ledge" is defined as dropping off the ledge on one side of the stage and reaching the height of the original ledge on the other side of the stage.
    Corollaries to Rule 6:
    * When one of the players is attacked by the other and takes damage, Rule 6 does not apply.
    * The moving platform on Smashville is considered to be equivalent to a ledge, i.e. if a player starts from the moving platform on one side of the stage and travels beneath the stage to the ledge/platform on the opposite side of the stage, the player may not travel beneath the stage back to the ledge/moving platform on the opposite side before until he lands back on the platform.
  • In the event pause is left on accidentally and is pressed, immediately call over the TO. Based upon their judgment, the situation will be resolved. If your situation is neutral [players are not in combat], the match will be resumed as if the pause had not occurred. If your situation is advantageous to one individual and the player in the disadvantageous situation paused, the disadvantaged player will be either placed in a grab or onto the ledge of the stage. If a player in a death situation [Chain grabs, Grab releases, Jab-locks to a kill move, etc] paused while in a death situation, the current stock is forfeited immediately. If you unpause before the TO reaches the station, the player that unpaused losses a stock.
  • Players who use the Wii Remote must take the batteries out of the Wii Remote when not playing. If the Wii Remote is still synced up to a Wii with the batteries in, you could unintentionally disrupt a match. If problems persist, a DQ may happen.
  • You are responsible for your own controller and name tag. Any malfunctions or errors that occur are your responsibility (including battery issues with a Wii Remote), so bring an extra controller if possible and always check to make sure you’re using the correct settings BEFORE a match is played. Both parties need to agree if a match is to be paused or restarted because of these problems.
  • The tournament organizer has the right to save/record any tournament match if possible and has the right to upload said match.
  • Any hacks, including (but not limited to) textures, music, and model changes are not allowed.

Additional Rules for Teams Play

  • Team Attack: ON.
  • Life Stealing is allowed.
  • If the game is paused accidentally while attempting to steal a life, the opposing team may deem that life forfeit. Wait until the announcer has finished saying defeated before pressing start, or turn pause off prior to beginning the match.
How to Play a Set

  1. Players select their characters. Either player may elect to Double Blind.
  2. Use Stage Striking* to determine the first stage.
  3. The players play the first match of the set.
Prior to starting this match, either player may elect to Contest Port Priority or Neutral Start.Note: Only one of these two may be used, as both have a built in Port Selection mechanism using RPS. If there is a situation where a player would like to change which option they elected after playing the game of RPS, it is the opponent’s choice to allow it. The results from the previously played game of RPS will carry over.
  4. Winning player of the preceding match bans a stage/stages (if applicable).
For Best of 3 sets, each player gets 1 stage ban.
For Best of 5 sets, there are no stage bans.
  5. The losing player of the preceding match picks a stage for the next match.

  11. Repeat Steps 4 through 9 for all subsequent matches until the set is complete.
Term Definitions

  • Double Blind: Either player may request that a double blind selection occur. In this situation, a 3rd party should be told, in secret, each of player’s choices for the first round. Both players are to then select their first round character, with the 3rd party validating that the character selected is the same as their word.
  • Contest Port Priority: If an agreement cannot be made as to who gets what port, the players may enact a best of 1 game of Rock Paper Scissors. Winner gets their port selection, loser selects any other port.
  • Neutral Start: Either player may enact this rule. Once enacted, both players may only use one of the two “Neutral Starting Positions”. A best of one game of Rock Paper Scissors may be used to determine who gets the higher port. If one player elects to Contest Port Priority and the other elects to Neutral Start, Neutral Start takes priority. Singles:

  • Forced Character Selection: The losing player once had the option to select Random Stage as their counterpick and remove the option to change characters from the winner of the previous round. This is no longer legal. If a player wishes to select Random Stage as their counterpick, the winner of the previous round may choose to change their character.
  • Stage Striking: Players eliminate stages from the Starter/Neutral list until there is one stage remaining.

Project M Ruleset

  • SINGLES
  • 4 stocks
  • 8 minute time limit
  • Ties after the time limit are determined by stocks, then by percentage.
  • If the match goes to Sudden Death due to a suicide move (Ganon's side-B, DDD's swallow, holding someone in a grab on a platform as it moves out of the boundaries, etc.), the one who initiated the move wins.
  • Any action that can prevent the game from continuing (freezing, disappearing characters, game reset, etc.) will result in forfeiture of the match for the player that initiated the action. You are responsible for knowing your own character and must be wary about accidentally triggering one of these effects.
  • Player's Choice Clause: You may play by a rule outside of this ruleset if your opponent agrees to it as long as it does not deliberately delay the tournament process. In the event of a disagreement, house rules stand.
  • Double Blind Character Picks: Players may elect to double blind pick their characters for the first match in case of any disputes.
  • The act of stalling is banned. This includes scrooging!
  • Players will decide order of stage striking by mutual agreement, Rock/Paper/Scissors, or Game & Watch's Number Hammer Game.
  • Bring your own controller! The Venue and the Tournament Organizer are not responsible for supplying you a controller and/or batteries for your controller. Each player will be responsible for bringing their own controller.
  • In the event pause is left on accidentally and is pressed, immediately call over the tournament organizer. Based upon their judgment, the situation will be resolved. If your situation is neutral (players are not in combat), the match will be resumed as if the pause had not occurred. If your situation is advantageous to one individual and the player in the disadvantageous situation paused, the disadvantaged player will be either placed in a grab or onto the ledge of the stage. If a player is in a death situation (chain grabs, grab releases, jab-locks to a KO move, etc) and pauses while such situation, the current stock is forfeited immediately. If a player unpause before the tournament organizer reaches the station, the player that unpaused loses a stock.
  • Users of the Wii Remote must take out the Wiimote's batteries. If problems persist due to the Wiimote, the owner of the Wiimote may be disqualified.
  • You are responsible for your own controller and name tag. Any malfunctions or errors that occur are your responsibility (including battery issues with a Wii Remote), so bring an extra controller if possible and always check to make sure you're using the correct settings BEFORE a match is played. Both parties need to agree if a match is to be paused or restarted because of these problems.
  • The tournament organizer has the right to save/record any tournament match if possible and has the right to upload said match.
  • Stage Strike from Starters for the first match of the set in "122112" fashion:
    1. First player strikes one stage.
    2. Second player strikes the next two stages.
    3. First player strikes the next two stages.
    4. Second player strikes one stage.
  • After Game 1 has ended, the loser chooses 2 stages to ban from either the Starter Stage List or the Counterpick Stage List. (The same goes for after Game 2 has ended if need be.)

Why are coaches only allowed for Brawl? @_@

Also, NYC is a relatively lively area for P:M. You should consider throwing that in if there's time imo :)

Uhh, I am in Manhattan, I am a few stops from here...first tournament since last Apex

No excuses unless there are finals the next week, going for melee, possibly brawl and I'll try Project M for the first time in a long while.

Definitely interested for Project M. Gotta check in with work first but if I do show I'll bring a Wii + Brawl setup.

EDIT: Though I honestly dislike that stage group system. Would rather have a more traditional Starter/CP system so that players are actually able gain the intended advantage from banning rather than going to a stage already similar with the same drawbacks (for example, banning Yoshi's Story because it's small but then getting sent to Metal Cavern, rendering your ban ineffective).

I agree with Gurukid about the P:M stagelist. It should be more traditional. We've played with the group system a couple of times and it's an interesting idea, but I don't feel it works as well because it has a few glaring faults. Since P:M has a lot of viable stages, it becomes really difficult to avoid polarizing stages in certain matchups because of stage redundancy. Like think of all the battlefield clones, for example, lol.

Hype for P:M! My friend and I will likely be bringing Demo 2.5 and a recording setup.

I've never tried the grouped stage list yet and would really like to give it a shot, but I have heard a lot of other people bringing up the issues Eli mentioned. The P:M group should focus a bit more on making a concrete stagelist for tournaments imo, but this isn't the place to discuss that :x

Confirmed. I'll bring a Wii, Brawl, and a recording setup as well.

The Project M Devs won't ever be making any official ruleset. They've decided to let each region decide on rulesets for themselves. All we do is design stages; the community decides what to do with them.

An alternative ruleset which is more conservative but would better fit overall IMO would be that of this tournament: http://www.smashboards.com/showthread.php?t=328842 And if you wanted to add a few more stages just make it 2 bans per player.

Of course I'll still be attending either way, and if the consensus is to give the grouping ruleset a shot over here s'all good.

EDIT: D1 entering P:M ma dood???

I will hopefully come to this. Just a couple questions. Do i need an Aib acc to register? This may be my first tournament can i enter both brawl and melee amateur bracket? also if I enter amateur and don't win I can still enter pro if I pay the fee, correct?

You don't need an AiB account to register. Just show up on time with a controller and the money required to enter whatever tournaments you want. I am not sure how they will exactly seed amateur or be able to tell who goes in what tournament so I guess you'll see when you get there.

Tournaments are fun, you'll have a great time.

Agreed. And thank you for answering his question.

I will add that you can enter the Amateur Bracket. Also, you can still enter the pro bracket as long as you pay the fee.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. We've discussed it and we will use the same stage list as "Brawl it Out" - i.e.:

Starters
Smashville
Battlefield
Final Destination
Yoshi's Story
Dreamland 64
Pokémon Stadium 2
Fountain of Dreams

Counterpicks
Pokémon Stadium 1
Metal Cavern
Green Hill Zone
Wario Ware
Yoshi's Island (Brawl)
Dracula's Castle
Rumble Falls

I'll be there. I see your stream section isn't filled out.... If you need help with that at all I would be glad to help with the production side of things. I dont have a computer / equipment with me in NY to bring but I could help run it / make overlays. I work on MLG's production so I have experience! ^^;

I might megabus to this. Who would be able to pick me up and drive me to the tournament or house me Friday? The megabus is 7 miles from the venue.

Could I also get a full venue discount if I bring a Wii and megabus here from MD?

We need setups!

I would first like to thank everyone who plans on coming out to this. With you you guys, we would not be a successful event. However, We need more help!

Please bring setups for Brawl/Melee/P:M!

Now, This does not mean you are guaranteed a setup discount if you brought one. We have to actually give you an OK to use it! Sticking your setup in and setting it up randomly without telling us will not get you a discount! You must bring it and check it in at the T.O desk to see if it will be used.

Full setup: $5.00
TV: $3.00
Wii/Cube: $2.00
