Challenger Pack 1 Criteria Results
Associated with PlayStation consoles: 1
From a big-name series that has had very limited presence on Nintendo systems: 7
JRPG character: 2
SEGA character: 5

Challenger Pack 1 will be from a popular series that has had little association with Nintendo! Character submissions are open now. Remember to think of candidates that would justify a reveal at the 2018 Game Awards!

PaRappa the Rapper

Kick! Punch! It's all in the mind! On your wiki page, Ninty you won't find - with no legacy greater, A Twitter breaker, Sony's prized pup will be a fandom shaker!

PaRappa the Rapper is a historically significant game - the first ever rhythm game in fact - which alone justifies his addition IMO. PaRappa has never made as much as a cameo on Nintendo's consoles but of all Sony's IPs is likely the one with the highest Nintendo fandom overlap. (at least from what I've seen) PaRappa may not have had a new game since '01, but he is highly recognisable - even to kids born after his final game's release - and one of the quintessential PS1 mascots. His moveset would likely focus on a mix of karate, skateboard tricks, and callbacks to classic raps.

Job about Nintendo limited presence Characters:
Opa-Opa (Fantasy Zone)

Opa-Opa is main protagonist character of Fantasy Zone series. He is sentient Spaceship, who fights the evil of Fantasy Zone universe itself. He was a mascot of SEGA before Alex and Sonic existed and he was popular in Japan on Arcades.
He has small association with Nintendo like unlicensed port on NES, but he didn't had any Nintendo appearances anymore until Sonic and SEGA Allstars Racing came out and Opa-Opa came back. Not only that he has small Nintendo presence, but he was influence for 2d side-view Shooter Game and he introduced concept of Boss Rush in Gaming, where you fight past bosses.

Also, SEGA has huge partnership with Nintendo, but Opa-Opa has small presence on it.

If he was in Smash Bros, he could be lightweight Zoner with a lot of Projectile Attacks like Shooting beams or Flying as Up Special. His gimmick could be Parts Shop, where he could upgrade his attacks, especially his Special moves by using neutral special during Shield. He could have fast Mobility in Air, but slow mobility on ground.

I nominate Opa-Opa, since he appeared on Nintendo Consoles in games like Sonic and Sega racing and even Port of Fantasy Zone on Nintendo 3DS and Switch, cool isn't it? He could be first lightweight on this AU DLC fighter pass vol. 1 and he could AU equivalent to Joker, since they both are SEGA characters, but unlike Joker, he is Classic SEGA character and he could be cool 3rd Party Retro Rep who has small association with Nintendo.

Job about Nintendo limited presence Characters:
Conker (Conker's Bad Fur Day)

Conker the Squirrel is the main character of Conker Series. He is 21 year old squirrel, who tries to date Berri, but he accidentally stumbles upon Panther Kingdom and he needs to escape it.

If he was in Smash, he could use random weapons as his attacks like chainsaw, machine gun or bazooka as Conker's deadly arsenal for a Platform Fighter. His gimmick is notably when he dies, he leaves a tail and if Conker comes back, he could regain his stock like in his games, where loses a tail and Gregg the Reaper brings him back to life.

I nominate my Conker, because he has small association with Nintendo and his game is Cult Following, which is possibly influential and popular due to mixture of Scrimblo Bimblo platformer and adult 18+ theme. He can be toned down like removal of blood and cursing, but the Pop-culture references could stay in Conker's taunts.
I'm sorry, but I don't think this one qualifies. Conker debuted on Nintendo, and he is almost always associated with the Nintendo 64 when discussed; it's like saying Banjo-Kazooie has limited Nintendo presence. Maybe if Rare/Microsoft had continued to use him and altered popular perception so that he is primarily associated with Microsoft consoles, it'd work, but that hasn't happened.

Aight,I'm gonna submit something else for now on.
But I have a problem with that.
Do you know what characters have small presence?
Since I'm not sure what characters are little associated with Nintendo.

Soldier

From Valve's Team Fortress 2, the Soldier rocket jumps into battle! Beyond being not present on Nintendo systems, the Soldier is barely present on consoles. But besides that, Team Fortress has been proven to be influential to gaming as a whole. Codifying class-based cooperative gameplay and the hero shooter genre. His moveset can be like a combination of Snake and Jigglypuff with a dash of Pichu thrown in. Excelling at projectile-based air combat. He'd be relatively floaty with a low-medium jump height. But with his rocket jump, he's able to gain great amounts of height at the cost of dealing damage to himself.

Basically any character who people are likely to forget ever appeared on Nintendo, if they have at all. (After some thought, I've decided I will allow characters that have never appeared on Nintendo. If we want, we can pretend they do in our parallel universe and Smash is acting as promotion for that.)

Kazuma Kiryu

Kiryu is a protagonist from the Yakuza franchise, a series that was primarily on Playstation for a good chunk of it's life.

Kiryu would be a very flashy, Fast and Powerful brawler.
Fun fact: the creator of Yakuza doesn't want Kiryu to be in fighting games because he doesn't want him to hit women. This is a forum game though, so we can just pretend the alternate universe version of him doesn't mind it.

I don't know if you saw yet but the original post has been edited with a new character.

So I just counted the votes, and...PaRappa and Kiryu are tied. Both were #1 for three people and #2 for one person each.

...so I guess we're stuck until we get another voter in, or anyone who has voted opts to change their vote to add or remove either. (If you change, please reply/ping me.)

I fielded the Social Thread for help because I really don't want this thread to screech to a halt. Thanks to unofficial voter WeirdChillFever, our Challenger Pack 1 is PaRappa the Rapper!

In the hopes of streamlining things a bit, we will be submitting and voting movesets, stages, and music lists at the same time. Please send in your ideas over the next day or two!

(Also, if anyone knows of any Smash-style renders of PaRappa--or just good 2D art, since he seems to be paper-thin?--feel free to show it to me so I can add it to PaRappa's eventual folder.)

Personaly felt Kiryu worked better as a Joker analog but I like the funny dog lad so it's no loss.

I like PaRappa serving as a different sort of flavor to the prompt than I expected. Instead of the hot current thing, it's someone that has a lot of historical significance (as the popularizer of the rhythm genre, which I especially appreciate as a Crypt of the NecroDancer fan) and has been inactive for some time (adding something of a Banjo flavor). I think PaRappa would serve this slot well.

PaRappa stage: Fruites Dojo

Dojo! Casino! It's all in the mind! This is a stage designed for competive play, but does have hazards with hazards on. You fight on the Fruites Dojo, which has cliffs, a sunset, and giant Chop Chop Master Onion in the background - the walls of the dojo are intact and you can even see the deer head and little onion men, but the walls cut off at the battle arena.

The layout resembles Melee Yoshi Adventure with two soft platforms sloped down towards each other - they both resemble the green mat on the floor. That aforementioned hazard is Cool Mode - pulling off a combo will put the word "COOL" above your fighter's HUD, Cool Mode is essentially turbo mode - if you land a hit, you can immediately do another input for another hit.

There aren't any cameos beyond Chop Chop Master Onion himself in the sky, though his design changes depending on which song you're playing - he'll have his regular outfit for PTR1 songs and any misc. songs we may add, his overgrown/homeless outfit for UmJammer Lammy songs, and his Romantic Karate outfit for PTR2 songs

I like this PaRappa render by Nibroc.Rock.

I'll begin work on PaRappa's stage - may I ask what the maximum number for the songlist?
As I said in the OP, I don't have set limits for things like music and will only request downsizing if something passes "unlikely" and enters "insane" territory. With PaRappa especially, I have no personal experience so I cannot accurately judge what might be reasonable--and the game is all about music, so having a lot of songs makes sense.

The most I'll say is that the Terry presentation implied Sakurai usually submits large amounts of prospective songs per DLC and usually gets a big chunk cut, so keep that in mind, I guess?

Also, do you have a link to the render's original source?

PaRappa song list: (remixes in Bold, game names listed for first in that game's list)

  1. Chop Chop Master Onion's RAP - PaRappa the Rapper
  2. Instructor Mooselini's RAP
  3. Instructor Mooselini's RAP - Smash Mix
  4. Prince Fleaswallow's RAP
  5. Cheap Cheap the Cooking Chicken's RAP
  6. Full Tank
  7. MC King Kong Mushi's Live Rap
  8. Funny Love
  9. Jet Baby Theme
  10. Joe Chin is Here!
  11. Toasty Buns - PaRappa the Rapper 2
  12. Romantic Love
  13. BIG
  14. BIG - Smash Mix
  15. Sista Moosesha
  16. Hair Scare
  17. Food Court
  18. Noodles Can't Be Beat
  19. Always Love!
  20. PaRappa's Appearance
  21. Loading Screen
  22. I Am A Master, And You? - UmJammer Lammy
  23. Fire Fire!
  24. Baby Baby!
  25. Baby Baby! - Smash Mix
  26. Fright Flight!
  27. Power On, Power Off!
  28. Vital Idol (Taste of Teriyaki)
  29. Got to Move
  30. Keep Your Head Up!
  31. Fright Flight (PaRappa's Version)
  32. Treasure
I felt it'd be best to 1. limit the remixes and 2. have them coexist with the regular songs given how iconic this series' music is. I did consider adding Vib-Ribbon and anime stuff but I felt my list was bloated as is.

PaRappa is a glass cannon shoto type who's a little faster and lighter than an average character of his archetype. He does not have any major gimmicks, but does have a microphone tether grab. A lot of moves here are taken from PlayStation All-Stars, see this video for further reference.

Rapid Jab: A multi-punch that ends with a shoulder hit - based his neutral and forward square moves from PSASBR

Dash: PaRappa spins his microphone like a fan towards the screen while running. Based on his side circle move from PSASBR

Up Tilt: An afro made of noodles grows from beneath PaRappa's hat, a reference to the Hair Scare stage from PaRappa 2

Down Tilt: PaRappa does a sliding kick, based on his down square from PSASBR

Forward Tilt: PaRappa does a downwards kick, based on his neutral air square from PSASBR

Up Smash: PaRappa does a handplant skateboard trick, based on his up triangle from PSASBR

Down Smash: PaRappa places Boxxy Boy at his feet, who lets out a sick beat. Based loosely on his Up Circle from PSASBR.

Side Smash: A forwards whack with his skateboard. Based on his neutral Triangle move from PSASBR

Up Air: An uppercut that can be cancelled into itself 3 times over, based on his up Square from PSASBR

Down Air: PaRappa stomps down, should he land on a foe, stop to kick them a bit more. Based on his air down from PSASBR

Back Air: PaRappa kicks backwards, sending him in a backwards trajectory. This will also reverse his direction! Based on his air forward square from PSASBR

Neutral Air: PaRappa holds his arms out and spins, a loose reference to Vibri's princess form from Vib-Ribbon, another Nana-OnSha game.

Forward Air: PaRappa slams down his skateboard, spiking foes. Based on his air down Triangle from PSASBR

Up B: Hold the Hose Real Tight: PaRappa gets a fire hose and pumps it downwards in a burst to fly. This goes relatively high and has a light windbox at the bottom, but no hitbox. Source

Down B: Double Dutch Inline Skate: PaRappa puts on roller skates and dashes forwards - this move goes fast and deals a lot of damage but only hits on his feet and legs. If PaRappa jumps out of this move the skates will continue rolling on! Source

Side B: I Can Sell Like This: PaRappa throws an arced projectile of one of the goods from Prince Fleaswallow's flea market. If it hits a foe, it will turn into money and linger - should PaRappa or a foe pick up or throw the money, it will be more powerful. It increases in strength every time it's thrown, and the countdown to disappearing eill reset too - but the amount of time it can linger for will also decrease as it gets more powerful. Source

B: Kick! Punch! Chop!: a counter-command grab - after hitting once a bar appears above PaRappa, and he can either press the special button again at the right time to do the second hit of the counter, or cancel it into any other action he wants at any time. This can be mashed out of, but every hit will reset the mashing. Source

Final Smash: Doom Box: PaRappa sings the portion MC King Kong Mushi's Live Rap used in PSASBR - you actually get to press buttons along to the rhythm to create shockwaves like DK's old bongo FS! Every button used to represent a beat is X, but you don't necessarily need to press B Source

If anyone wants to make alternate submissions for PaRappa's moveset, stage, and music, let me know--if that doesn't happen, though, we will go with Wario Wario Wario's submissions for all!

Now, submissions for PaRappa's alternate colors, entry animation, taunts, victory animations, Boxing Ring title, and Classic Mode are opened. (Baysha's early Classic Mode submission will be allowed.)

The Power of Music
PaRappa fights characters who are associated with or have prominently utilized music.

Round 1: :ultjigglypuff: on Pokemon Stadium 2 (Pokémon Red / Pokémon Blue Medley)

Round 2: :ultgunner: (K.K. Slider) on Smashville (Go K.K. Rider!)

Round 3: :ultinkling: (yellow) on Moray Towers (Calamari Inkantation)

Round 4: :ultdk: on Kongo Falls (Battle for Storm Hill)

Round 5: :ultyounglink: :ultsheik: on Hyrule Castle (Song of Storms)

Round 6: :ultness: x4 on Magicant (Magicant (for 3DS / Wii U))

Bonus Game

Final Round: Master Hand (& Crazy Hand)

Credits: (willing to change both of the below at PaRappa fans' suggestions)
Music: Chop Chop Master Onion's RAP
Congratulations Screen: PaRappa in Kapp'n's bus driving through Prism Tower.

PaRappa Classic Route: Anything But Noodles!
Each battle is themed on a different type of food, and has that respective food as the only item. This references the plot of PaRappa 2, where all food in the world (and also hair) is being turned into noodles.
  1. Pac-Man (red leg warmers) x 4 on Delfino Plaza (Pizza) (Jungle Level - Jazz)
  2. Yellow Duck Hunt and Yellow Inkling on Onett (Hot Dog) (Emerald Hill Zone)
  3. Tiny yellow Kirby x 8 on Lylat Cruise (Popcorn) (Galeem/Dharkon)
  4. White G&W on Wrecking Crew (Onigiri) (Boss 1 from Sakura Samurai)
  5. Falco, Tiny yellow Falco x 3 on Battlefield Dream Land (Eggs) (Charge! - Wii Play)
  6. Black Incineroar, Shiny Incineroar, and Black-Red Incineroar on Omega Rainbow Cruise (Chocolate) (Jungle Level Tribal Style)
  7. Final Boss: Crazy Hand and unlimited orange bikini ZSSes on Omega Fruites Dojo (Noodles Can't Be Beat!)

Credits: Full Tank

Congratulations picture: Ness with a rocket belt approaching a giant Bowser with Bewear beneath on Omega New Donk (reference to the Jet Baby intros in the PaRappa games)

Entry animation: A piece of paper falls to the ground, PaRappa's frog emblem hops onto it, and he comes to life. Source
